Port Blair, Aug 01: Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award for Outstanding Research in Tribal Farming Systems- 2013, has been conferred to the team of Scientists comprising of Dr. M. Sankaran (Team Leader), Dr. P. Krishnan, Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed and Dr. V. Damodaran of CIARI, Port Blair for taking up applied research in tribal areas for improving the biological resources and livelihood vis-a-vis to tribal farming system. The team have developed, demonstrated and transferred high-yielding varieties of coconut, sweet potato, greater yam and spices. Beside, the technologies such as plantation management, tuber crops based farming system, marine capture fisheries and its value-additions were demonstrated at Nicobari Tribal villages in Nicobar and South Andaman District which has improved their livelihood security.
The work of the team under the guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CIARI was recognized for National award and was given by Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Shri. Radha Mohan Singh and Hon’ble Minister of State for Agriculture & Food Processing Industries, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan in presence of Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR, New Delhi, during ICAR Award Ceremony at New Delhi on 29th July 2014.
