Port Blair, July 08: Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) AK Singh, today felicitated the first five toppers of Science, Commerce, Arts and Vocational streams of the AISSCE (class XII) examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) for the academic year 2013-2014. At a function organized under the aegis of Education Department, A & N Administration at Raj Niwas here this afternoon, the Lt. Governor gave away merit certificate and gold medal to the toppers of all streams. The Lt. Governor also presented Late Ajay Mathew Gold Medal to Kumar Akshaj EP of Kendriya Vidyalaya-I, Port Blair, 1st topper of AISSCE 2014, who scored 96.8% mark and certificate of excellence to the best schools in rural/urban area and best Administration School in three Districts.
Speaking on the occasion, the Lt. Governor congratulated the meritorious students for their excellent performance in their academic subjects and lauded the efforts of the teachers and parents for their contribution in helping the successful students reach the top. ‘‘I would like to congratulate the sincere teachers and the parents of the meritorious students who have performed well and made the Islands, teachers & and more importantly, their parents proud”, he said.
Expressing his happiness on the incredible achievements of the students, he said by securing high marks in the academics, our students have proved that they are second to none when compared with their counterparts in mainland. He noted with appreciation that there was 6 percent improvement in the result of class XII this year and assured that the Administration is committed to provide the right ambience and required facilities to our students so that they excel in all fields.
He observed that students are the centerpiece of our education system. It is, therefore, imperative that our education system should be student centric. “Our focus should be to make our children proud, honest and hardworking citizens of our country, the Lt. Governor observed. His appeal to the teaching fraternity was to work with zeal for the all round development of the students. Besides doing well in academics, students should also be encouraged to participate in other co-curricular activities, sports, creating awareness about their rights and duties and learning communication skills which, the Lt Governor felt will help them enhance their confidence level. The Lt. Governor said that the students should dream big and follow them in right earnest till their goal is achieved.
Among others, the function was also graced by the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, Smt. Rupa Ray, the Adhyaksha Zila Parishad South Andaman, Ms VK Mariam Bibi, the Chairperson PBMC, Shri K Ganeshan, the Chiarperson SSWB, Smt. Ratna Kannan, Shri Hari Narayan Arora, an eminent citizen, Senior officers from defence & civil Administration, proud parents and officers of the Education Department.
Naval Children School, Minnie Bay and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Panchawati, Rangat were awarded trophies for best senior secondary school in Urban and rural areas respectively. GSSS Model Port Blair, GSSS Kishorinagar and GSSS Campbell Bay were awarded trophies for best senior secondary school of Administration in South Andaman, North & Middle Andaman and Nicobar District.
Welcoming the chief guest and others present on the occasion, the Secretary–cum-Director (Education), Shri Devinder Singh said that the felicitation ceremony is organised every year to encourage the students and schools for better performance. The felicitation function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Deputy Director (Education), Shri Dharmendra Kumar.
