Port Blair, June 26: The Member of Parliament of A & N Islands today demanded introduction of unorganized Social Security Welfare Schemes for people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor recently, the MP said that Govt of India has passed Unorganised Social Security Act in 2008 wherein various welfare Schemes were to be extended to Unorganised Sector workers.
“A&N Islands Unorganised Social Security Rules were framed in 2012 but currently there has been no progress in implementation of these schemes in our Islands , on perusal it was citied that, adequate funds has not been provided,” the MP added in his letter.
He requested the LG to ensure that proper funds of Rs 25 lakhs are allocated in FY 2014-15 so that the welfare schemes are introduced at the earliest.
“The Registration of workers in North & Middle Andaman was started last year by Deputy Commissioner but the same has not been started by the District Administration in South Andaman and Nicobar District. Hence Deputy Commissioner (SA & Nicobar) should be asked to start registration numbers provided under the Unorganised Social Security Act in 2008 and issue Smart cards as laid down in the Act, immediately to the unorganised workers,” the MP added.
