Port Blair, June 21: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration today said that the proposed Medical College will be a game changer for this remote territory.
Addressing a press conference yesterday the Principal Secretary of Health of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mrs. Rina Roy said that establishment of Medical College in these remote Union Territory will lead to creation of many jobs for the locals.
“The Medical College will require huge amounts of materials and supplies, which will be taken from local suppliers. It will require huge services, which again will be taken from local providers. The Medical College will inject huge funds into the economy of Port Blair especially which will have a very positive and beneficial impact all over the Islands,” the Principal Secretary Health said.
She said that at least 50 seats in the 100 seater Medical College will be available for local students, which can go upto 75.
Regarding Post Graduate classes, Mrs. Ray said that the Post Graduate Classes will start in Andaman’s Medical College from third year.
Commenting over the controversy regarding shifting of AYUSH Hospital for the medical college, Mrs. Ray said that the Administration is fully conscious of the need to nurture and promote all alternatives systems of medicines under AYUSH.
“Infact the Lt. Governor has stated that AYUSH services should not be disrupted in any way. Therefore Lt. Governor has set up a committee under the Principal Secretary Health to examine possible alternatives where AYUSH can temporarily be shifted,” she added.
