Port Blair, Mar 19: Meet Porimal Das, a patient having a deadly tumor behind his right eye. The tumor has now taken such a bad shape that it has dislocated the right eye ball of the patient.
Porimal, with his protruding eye, nowadays is running from pillar to post to get some financial help from the Administration for his treatment.
Luckily his case has been taken up by administration and only Rs. 1 Lakh has been released from LG’s relief fund for the treatment of the patient, who is passing every day with great difficulties and unbearable pain.
The Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is kind enough to release Rs. 1 lakh but one wonders is this amount sufficient for specialized treatment in Mainland India? Can we get proper treatment in Mainland India with just Rs. 1 Lakh?
The Lt. Governor has in past made it clear that it is not possible to release all money from LG relief fund for treatment of only one patient. As there are large number of poor patients, the Raj Niwas releases some amount and hope the civil society to step in.
But for Porimal, who is passing each day with so much difficulties, such explanation carries no meaning. Due to this tumor he had to leave his job at Diglipur, where he was working as Barber.
Since last many years his wife is running the entire family by working as domestic help. His two daughters and one son are still in school and even for them Porimal is unable to do anything.
In past there were dozens of examples, where for special and critical cases, extra amount has been granted by Raj Niwas. Porimal’s case is obviously qualifies for such consideration.
According to a rough estimate, the operation of Porimal will cost atleast 3 to 4 lakh and as he is from a poor background, there is hardly anyone, who will bother to come forward to help Porimal financially.
Administration has some strict rules but for those, who don’t have enough money for daily bread, it is difficult to arrange Rs. 2 to 3 Lakhs from general public.
The Administration must come forward and in such special cases release some extra money to save a life. There is also a need to review the system of making estimate for such operation, which is always much much lower than the actual rate of treatment in Mainland India, putting poor patients in the soup.
Andaman Sheekha requests the Lt. Governor to review this case and release some additional money for his treatment. Andaman Sheekha also urges all readers of Andaman Sheekha to come forward and donate some amount to Porimal Das.
