Port Blair, Mar 19: The Command Diving Unit (CDU) under the Naval Component of Andaman and Nicobar Command, once again acted swiftly to the aid of a local girl, Jotika Das who is working as a rescue diver with Barefoot Scuba Diving Centre, Havelock by giving Oxygen Recompression Therapy for about three hours in the Recompression Chamber of CDU, Port Blair. Duppatla LSCD-II, an experienced diver from the CDU was in attendance in the Recompression Chamber with the patient, constantly monitoring her vital parameters. The recompression therapy was supervised by Lt CdrDashrath, Officer-in-Charge, CDU, and a complete recovery was ensured.
The Recompression Chamber, is a specialised facility for treating diving related accidents. In these islands it is only available with the Naval Diving Unit, Port Blair, and has been put to use at least six times in the recent past for treating divers for Decompression Sickness (DCS), a condition arising from dissolved gases coming out of blood into bubbles inside the body on sudden depressurisation.
It will be recalled that last week, Mr David Foord, a 62 year old British national who was diving off Havelock Island, developed DCSand was treated in the recompression chamber for two days, and fully recovered.
Altruistic efforts of the Naval Divers under the Andaman and Nicobar Command have saved a number of precious lives in our pristine Islands. Where human lives are at stake, the Naval divers of the Andaman and Nicobar Command will always be at the vanguard of rescue and relief efforts everywhere and at all times.
