Port Blair, Nov 06: Genetically improved Rohu strain, Jayanti Rohu (CIFA-IR 1) advance fry of two months old were distributed to six selected farmers of South Andaman district on 31st Oct 2013 by the Director Dr. S. Dam Roy, Central Agricultural Research Institute in a programme conducted at Garacharma. Jayanti rohu spawn of 5 days old were brought to CARI from Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar for the first time by the Division of Fisheries Science and reared in selected nurseries in the Islands. The purpose of introduction of Jayanti Rohu is to study the species’ performances in the Islands condition. It is established that Jayanti Rohu shows 17% more growth per generation after five generations of selection in comparison to normal rohu. This will pave way ahead for diversification of carp culture in the Island benefiting the rural people in coming days was told by the Director, CARI.
