Port Blair, Mar 06: The Director General of Police has urged all Islanders to adhere to traffic rules on the Holi Day.
“The festival of Holi is celebrated in theseIslandswith great enthusiasm by the public. A large number of Four Wheeler and Two Wheeler riders come-out on the roads and visit various places including Hotels Corbyn’s Cove beach etc. and it has often been noticed that the drivers and riders celebrate the occasion by indulging in rash and dangerous driving after consuming liquor,” the DGP said in a press release today.
The DGP added that chances of accidents taking place multiply.
“Therefore it has been decided to launch special joint operation by the Traffic and local police against dangerous driving, drunken driving, driving without Helmet etc., during the festival of Holi on 8th March 2012. Parents of teenagers are advised not to allow their children to drive motor cycles and other vehicles without valid licence and without helmets in the case of two wheelers. Anyone found driving under intoxication, without helmet or without valid licence will have to face stern action under the provisions of the Motor vehicles Act 1988 apart from a recommendation to the Licensing Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands for suspension of the driving licence,” he said.
All vehicle users are hereby cautioned to refrain from indulging in any act, including harassment to ladies, which is punishable under the law. No leniency will be shown to eve-teasers.
“It may be mentioned here that during last Holi, the number of violators booked for rash, negligent, drunken driving and violation of other Motor vehicles rules like intoxication, causing obstruction or nuisance to the general public ran into hundreds. Also, we should remember that this is a special occasion and not an excuse to drink alcohol, dance on the roads, hold up traffic and play offensive and inappropriate music,” he said.
The DGP urged general public to adhere to Traffic Rules to help us to organize the Holi Festival celebrations peacefully and without traffic accidents or any untoward incident.
