Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 18: In a valuable educational initiative aimed at creating awareness among the younger generation about modern animal husbandry practices, 78 students of Class III to V from Mahatma Gandhi International School (MGIS), Brookshabad, accompanied by 4 teachers, made an enriching exposure visit today to the Central Hatchery and Dairy Training cum Demonstration Farm at Livestock Farm Complex (LFC), Dollygunj.
The students first visited the Central Hatchery, Dollygunj, where they observed incubator and hatchery operations, toured different poultry sheds housing Vanaraja parent stock and ducks, and showed keen interest in Turkey, Guinea Fowl, and Quails. Senior Veterinary Officer, Central Hatchery, explained the day-to-day hatchery operations in detail, sparking great curiosity among the young visitors.
Thereafter, the group proceeded to the Government Dairy Training cum Demonstration Farm, Dollygunj, where they observed the Pig Farm with different breeds of pigs, the Cattle Farm with various breeds, sheds, concentrate feeding with green fodder, the chaff cutter, green fodder stacking room, and milk shed. They also visited the Goat Farm and found the Malabari goat breed particularly fascinating. Senior Veterinary Officer, DTCDF Dollygunj, briefed the students on the scientific management practices followed daily in pig, goat, and cattle farms for better production and productivity.
The exposure visit was designed to familiarise students with scientific methods of livestock and poultry management being practised at the departmental farms, with the broader objective of encouraging local farmers to adopt similar techniques for increased production and income generation. The students and teachers expressed great appreciation for the practical learning experience.
This initiative reflects the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services’ commitment to creating awareness among school children about modern and sustainable animal husbandry practices across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
