
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 18: On the observance of World Social Justice Day (20th February), the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC A&N Islands) organized an Awareness-cum-Workshop on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH Act, 2013) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 at JNRM Gallery.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from 125 students, along with faculty members, making it a meaningful initiative towards promoting equality, dignity, and inclusion.
The programme commenced with registration, followed by a welcome address by Shri Venket Ramana, Assistant, CRC A&N Islands, who highlighted the importance of social justice and inclusive responsibility among youth.
Smti. Sumithamol S., Director, CRC A&N Islands, addressed the gathering and presented an overview of CRC activities and initiatives for the empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. She also administered the Social Justice Oath, which was solemnly taken by all 125 students, reaffirming their commitment towards equality, non-discrimination, and inclusive practices.
The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr. Pearl Devdass, Principal, JNRM, who emphasized the crucial role of students in building a safe, respectful, and inclusive society.
Dr. Niti Shegawath, HOD, Home Science Department, JNRM, also graced the occasion and encouraged students to actively promote gender sensitivity, dignity, and inclusion within the campus and the wider community.
The technical sessions were highly informative and engaging.
Smti. Rubina Siddqui, President, Rights for All and Master Trainer on POSH Act, delivered an expert session on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace (POSH Act, 2013), sensitizing students on workplace ethics, rights, and legal safeguards.
This was followed by a session on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act) by Smti. Saranyah R.K., Rehabilitation Officer, CRC A&N Islands, who elaborated on the rights, entitlements, and importance of accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
An interactive session enabled participants to actively engage, ask questions, and reflect on their role in ensuring social justice in everyday life.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks expressing gratitude to the Principal, faculty members, resource persons, and students for their valuable support and participation.
The event marked a significant step towards strengthening awareness on social justice, legal rights, gender sensitivity, and inclusive development in the island community.
