Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 9: A group of college students staged a protest and partial road blockade today at Mayabunder demanding immediate attention to their higher education–related concerns and seeking a direct meeting with the Deputy Commissioner (DC). The demonstration, which began in the morning, led to brief disruption of traffic as students gathered on the road raising slogans and asking for written assurance regarding their demands.
Senior administrative officials, including the Additional District Magistrate and police officers, reached the spot and appealed to the students to maintain peace and avoid blocking the entire road, citing inconvenience to the general public. Officials informed the protesters that their grievances had already been communicated to the Education Department at Sri Vijaya Puram and were under active consideration. They urged students to disperse peacefully and return to their colleges while discussions continued at the administrative level.
Students, however, insisted on a written assurance and demanded the physical presence of the DC, stating that previous verbal promises had not yielded concrete outcomes. After further dialogue, the administration conveyed that the DC was in an official meeting related to the same issue and would meet students at their college later. Following the assurance of a scheduled interaction, students agreed to wait briefly and consider ending the blockade peacefully.
