Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 09: In a continued effort to ignite interest in animal husbandry and sustainable livestock practices among the younger generation, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services successfully facilitated an educational exposure visit for students of Government Senior Secondary School, VK Pur, to the Central Livestock Farm (CLF) Nanjappa Nagar, Hut Bay on 4 February 2026.
A group of 36 enthusiastic students, accompanied by 2 dedicated teaching staff members, participated in the visit. The students were taken on a comprehensive guided tour of the farm, where they witnessed the fresh hatch-out of Quail (Namakkal breed) and closely observed various classes of poultry birds, ducks, and White Yorkshire pigs. The farm staff demonstrated day-to-day management activities, including feeding regimes, housing systems, health monitoring, and breeding practices, giving the young visitors a firsthand understanding of scientific livestock farming.
The students appeared visibly happy and satisfied throughout the visit, showing keen interest and curiosity in the operations. Many expressed excitements at seeing newly hatched quail chicks and interacting with the farm animals, which provided them with practical insights into the role of animal husbandry in rural livelihoods, nutrition security, and sustainable agriculture in the islands.
The exposure visit was designed to inspire students towards livestock farming, breed conservation, and the broader importance of animal husbandry in supporting rural economies and household nutrition. It also served as an effective platform to instill early awareness of responsible animal care, welfare practices, and the Department’s ongoing initiatives in poultry, piggery, and fodder development.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services extend its sincere appreciation to the school authorities, teachers, and students for their active participation and enthusiasm. Such educational visits play a vital role in building scientific temperament and interest in agriculture and animal husbandry among school children. The Department remains committed to organising more such hands-on exposure programmes to departmental farms, hatcheries, and livestock units across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the coming months.
