Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 18: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services successfully organized a colourful and well-attended Pet Walk on 17th Jan as one of the key highlights of the ongoing Animal Welfare Fortnight 2026 (14–30 January). The event commenced at 6 am from Marina Park Gate with the green flag waved by Dr. K A Naveen, Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and concluded at Flag Point.
A large number of dog lovers, pet owners and their furry companions participated with great zeal, turning the walk into a vibrant display of responsible pet parenting and community spirit. Many participants walked alongside their pets, carrying placards and banners promoting animal welfare messages.
Addressing the gathering at the conclusion of the walk, the Director spoke passionately about some important aspects of modern pet and stray animal management. He strongly advocated adopting homeless dogs and cats from streets or shelters rather than purchasing expensive breeds, highlighting that adoption saves lives and reduces abandonment.
As a token of appreciation and to encourage continued responsible care, a small Pet Care Kit containing useful items was distributed to all participants. The programme will continue with upcoming activities including veterinary health camps, painting competitions for school children, awareness sessions on animal first-aid in schools, and exposure visits to departmental farms and institutions.
The Department has invited all residents, pet owners, animal lovers, schools and voluntary organisations to join the remaining events and contribute towards building a kinder, more humane and harmonious society in the A&N Islands.
