Campbell Bay, July 09: A large number of traders gathered at Zero Point, Campbell Bay today to participate in a Chakka Jam (road blockade) organised by the Small Traders Association of Campbell Bay. The protest was in response to what traders called “persistent neglect” and non-fulfilment of cargo transport demands by the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS).
The traders had earlier intimated the authorities through an official letter dated July 8, 2025, informing them about their intention to organise a Chakka Jam in case their demand for a dedicated vessel was not met. The letter highlighted the adverse impact of arbitrary cargo restrictions and lack of reliable shipping services on local trade and livelihoods.
Initially, junior officers from the administration tried to pacify the protestors, but the traders stood firm. Later in the day, the Assistant Commissioner of Great Nicobar reached the protest site and held detailed discussions with the association members.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, G. Venkat Rao, Pradhan of Govind Nagar Panchayat, said, “The Assistant Commissioner assured that MV Swaraj Dweep vessel will be schedules from Port Blair to Campbell Bay, for which confirmation will be given in one or two days. With this assurance, Traders decided to call off the Chakka Jam.”
The Assistant Commissioner also assured that a formal sailing schedule would be released within the next one or two days. However, traders have made it clear that if this assurance is not fulfilled in time, they will launch dharna (sit-in protest) again.
