Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 16: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram, Port Blair is delighted to announce the opening of its much-anticipated Agro Eco Walk at the Sippighat and Garacharma farms for the general public, commencing from 21st April 2025.The Agro Eco Walk offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the scenic and research-rich agricultural landscapes of the Islands, while promoting awareness about sustainable farming and biodiversity conservation.
At Sippighat Farm, visitors can enjoy a walk through the serene natural surroundings, walk through the spice-based plantation area, and explore the unique World Coconut Germplasm Centre, which conserves a vast collection of coconut varieties. The Spice Processing Unit gives insights into value addition and post-harvest technologies. The Mangrove Viewpoint provides a picturesque glimpse into the island’s coastal ecosystems, while the Farm Sale Point offers fresh and locally grown produce for purchase.
At Garacharma Farm, special attractions include Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Ayurvatika, a beautifully curated garden of medicinal and aromatic plants dedicated to the memory of the former President. Visitors can also experience the Nakshatra Garden, which creatively integrates botany and astrology by showcasing plants associated with the 27 celestial constellations. The farm also houses a horticulture nursery rich in rare and native plant species of the islands. Additionally, the ornamental fish breeding unit, an array of fancy birds, and the relaxing fish spa make it a fun and educational destination for families, nature lovers, and students.
The Agro Eco Walk will be open from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Entry tickets will be available at the Sale Point on the respective farm premises.
This initiative is aimed at fostering awareness about the region’s rich agro-biodiversity and scientific farming practices while offering an engaging recreational experience. ICAR-CIARI warmly invites tourists, students, and local residents to participate and enjoy this unique journey through nature and science.
