Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 15: The Assam Association, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (AAANI) organized a grand celebration of Rongali Bihu – the festival of spring, joy, and song and cultural pride that marks the Assamese New Year – at the MES Community Hall, Brichgunj, Sri Vijaya Puram on 14th April. The day-long event witnessed enthusiastic participation of the Assamese community residing in the islands.
The celebrations commence with the hoisting of the Association’s flag by Mr. Biman Chandra Borah, President of the Bihu Celebration Committee. This was followed by the rendition of the Jatiya Sangeet and Swahid Tarpan (tribute to martyrs) led by Dr. Seemanta Kumar Deka. Major Prabhuraj Deori planted a tree sapling on the premises, adding an eco-friendly touch to the celebration.
The cultural program began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Major Mintu Rajbonshi. In his address, Dr. Dipon Sharmah highlighted the significance of celebrating Bihu in these far-flung islands.
Traditional games such as Koni Juj and Tekeli Bhanga were organized for children, filling the air with joy and nostalgia. This was followed by a vibrant Mukoli Bihu programme, where the audience was immersed in the rich rhythms of Assamese dance and music.
The womenfolk were elegantly dressed in traditional mekhela chador, while the men donned gamosas – the iconic Assamese handwoven towel – adding to the festive spirit.
The Annual General Body Meeting of AAANI was also conducted during the event. The existing executive committee was dissolved and a new committee was constituted with the following members: Dr. Dipon Sharmah (President), Mr. Bikash Das (Vice President), Mr. Tapashya Rai (Secretary), Mr. Himanshu Bora (Joint Secretary) and Mr. Asim Das (Treasurer). An advisory committee was also formed comprising Major Prabhuraj Deori, Major Mintu Rajbonshi, Mr. Naba Kumar Bora, Dr. Seemanta Kumar Deka and Dr. Parag Deori.
Prizes and gifts were awarded to the winners of various games. Traditional delicious food was also served to everyone. The event concluded with a farewell program and the singing of the National Anthem.
