Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 06: The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), under the aegis of the Administration, observed the 62nd National Maritime Day today, commemorating India’s rich maritime heritage. This year’s theme, ‘Samriddh Sagar – Viksit Bharat Yevam Neel Arth Aur Harit Vikas Ke Liye Yuva’ (Prosperous Ocean-For a Developed India, Blue Economy and Green Growth through Youth), reflected the integral role of youth in shaping a sustainable and developed maritime future.
The Day’s observance commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Captain. Beal’s grave, honouring the maritime pioneers whose contributions laid the foundation for seafaring in these Islands. The ceremony was attended by the Director and Deputy Director of Shipping Services, SCI, Members of the Boat Owners’ Associations, DSS staff and other maritime stakeholders.
Participants assembled at Choulanga Jetty, Marine Dockyard, where the Red Insign Flag was ceremoniously hoisted by the Director, Shipping Services, Mr. Parvesh Ranja Jha. This was followed by addresses from both the Director and Deputy Director, who emphasized the significance of National Maritime Day and underscored the importance of youth engagement in advancing the blue economy and green growth. They also highlighted the Directorate’s ongoing initiatives supporting a sustainable maritime future and contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
As part of the celebration, a spirited Tug of War competition between Afloat and Dockyard Sections of the Directorate was a key highlight, fostering camaraderie and enthusiasm among the staff. The Afloat Section emerged victorious in the friendly contest.
To reinforce the commitment to environmental sustainability, a tree planting ceremony was organized at Marine Dockyard, symbolizing the Directorate’s dedication to eco-conscious maritime practices.
The day’s activities served as a heartfelt tribute to India’s maritime legacy and reaffirmed the DSS’s commitment to excellence in shipping services, youth participation, and sustainable development.
