Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 04: Today on 04.04.2025, in a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism practices, 34 hoteliers from Swarajdweep and Shaheed Dweep including Government Guest Houses were awarded Swachhata Green Leaf Rating certificates. The certificates were distributed by Mr. Jitendra Srivastava, IAS, Joint Secretary and Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India. Mr. Jitendra Srivastava was joined by Mr. Sushant Padha, IAS, Assistant Commissioner, Swaraj Dweep, and Mrs. Gurjeet Kaur, Block Development Officer, CD Block Prothrapur, in presenting the certificates to the hoteliers. This achievement demonstrated the commitment of the hoteliers in Swarajdweep and Shaheed Dweep towards maintaining high standards of hygiene and sanitation, and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
The Swachhata Green Leaf Rating system is an initiative of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability within the hospitality sector. The system evaluates hotels, resorts, and homestays based on their adherence to safe sanitation practices and environmental sustainability.
While addressing the gathering, Mr. Jitendra Srivastava, IAS encouraged the hoteliers to participate in Swachhata Green Leaf Rating system showing their involvement towards safe sanitation management in the Islands. He informed the gathering that India is the only country in the world that has adopted Swachhata Green Leaf Rating system and the Government of India is focused for wide publicity and adoption of this system so that the tourists/guests select the hotels with maximum leaf rating which in turn contribute and promote best sanitation practices in the tourism sector. In near future, the hotels not adopting the suitable sanitation practices will be penalize and those adopting good practices will be incentivized. He highlighted the issue of plastic waste, wet waste management and poor public toilet in the Islands which need immediate attention by the UT Administration with the support of PRIs and General Public. The Hoteliers who received 3 Leaf and 1 Leaf rating certificates were encouraged to come up with improvements in coming period and try to get 5 Leaf rating certificate.
