Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 16: To emphasize the importance of conserving honeybees, promoting their byproducts and to enhance knowledge and skills in scientific beekeeping practices, the Department of Agriculture, A&N Administration, in collaboration with the National Bee Board, MoA&FW, New Delhi organized a two-days District level training programme on ‘Scientific Bee Keeping – Role of bees in Agriculture Production and its Economics’ on March 10 & 11, 2025. The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Lalita Tigga, Block Development Officer as chief guest on Mar.10 in the presence of Mr. Abdul Basheer, Zilla Parishad Member, Ferrargunj and Mr. Ramesh Kumar, Joint Director (Agriculture) in the Community Hall of Ferrargunj, South Andaman.
In her address, the chief guest encouraged the Self Help Group to adopt beekeeping as a lucrative self-employment opportunity and agriculture supporting activity.
Welcoming the gathering, Mr. Ramesh Kumar, Joint Director (Agri.) (HQ) highlighted that bees are essential pollinators which play a vital role in the ecosystem, helping to maintain biodiversity, crop production, and the health of the environment.
Mr. Abdul Basheer, Zilla Parishad Member advised farmers and self-help groups (SHGs) to adopt beekeeping. During the technical session, various topics of beekeeping were dealt with in detail by the Departmental Officers. Departmental schemes and institutional support for bee keeping ventures under HVADA were also highlighted.
A field visit was held on the second day in the field of Mrs. Sumati Joydhar at Chouldari village. Rearing of honey bees, maintaining bee colonies and methods of honey extraction were demonstrated to them. Hands-on practice of bee keeping activities were performed by the participants.
