Port Blair, Aug 19: On 19 August 2024, Gram Panchayat Shivapuram organized a solemn protest march and candlelight vigil in response to the horrific rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the nation, igniting calls for justice and stricter measures to protect women and medical professionals.
Participants in the peaceful march, including PRIs, women, villagers, and senior citizens of Shivapuram Panchayat, raised powerful slogans such as “We want justice,” “Save our doctors, save society,” and “Stop the murder of women.” The procession, which began at Shivapuram Panchayat Bhawan and concluded at Betapur Police Post before returning to the Panchayat Bhawan, drew a large crowd of concerned citizens.
Upon reaching the Panchayat Bhawan, the gathering observed a two-minute silence in memory of the victim. Addressing the participants, Pradhan Shri Venkateswar Rao expressed deep sorrow and emphasized the need for the safety of all medical staff, stating, “We are united in this hour of grief and are committed to ensuring the safety of every child and doctor, regardless of gender. We urge both the Kolkata and Central Governments to deliver the harshest punishment to the perpetrator and enact strict laws to prevent such heinous crimes in the future.”
