Billiground, May 26: Expecting mothers in the Billiground area are facing immense challenges due to the absence of specialist doctors and testing facilities at the Primary Health Center (PHC) Billiground. The PHC, designated as a FICTC (Facility Integrated Counseling and Testing Center) by the Government of India, is currently being operated by an inadequate number of staffs.
With a small maternity ward comprising just three beds, routine tests and check-ups for patients have become major hurdles. The lack of essential testing facilities, such as ultrasound and other crucial diagnostic tests, forces patients to travel to distant healthcare facilities like District Hospital Mayabunder or CHC Rangat.
Villagers demand that the administration must prioritize the provision of high-quality healthcare services, as the quality of care during pregnancy and childbirth is vital for the well-being of both mothers and newborns.
Mr. Debabrata Das, the Pradhan of the Gram Panchayat Swadesh Nagar, expressed his concerns about the dire situation in the village. He highlighted the absence of testing facilities and the unavailability of specialist doctors for consultations at PHC Billiground. Additionally, the insufficient staff at the PHC has resulted in an unhygienic environment, especially in the maternity ward, where newborns and their mothers face significant challenges. The lack of proper washrooms and toilets further exacerbates the situation.
The Middle Andaman district, comprising areas like Jaipur, Swadesh Nagar, and Hari Nagar, with a population of over 20,000 people, is experiencing the repercussions of inadequate healthcare facilities. The absence of various testing facilities is a pressing concern. The community has urged the Directorate of Health Services to address these issues promptly.
To alleviate the situation, the Gram Panchayat has requested regular visits from specialist doctors at PHC Billiground. “It is imperative that the Directorate of Health Services schedules these visits in advance to ensure timely and proper healthcare services. Additionally, an adequate supply of medicines should be made available at PHC Billiground. The current scenario forces patients with minor injuries to travel to hospitals in Port Blair, causing inconvenience and financial strain,” the pradhan added.
