Port Blair, Dec 30: The Arrival of New Year is a happy occasion celebrated in these Islands with great enthusiasm by the public. A Large number of Four Wheeler and Two Wheeler riders are out on the roads and visit various places.
It is often noticed that the drivers or riders celebrates the occasion by indulging in rash and dangerous driving after consuming liquor. Chances of road accidents naturally multiply.
It is therefore decided to launch a special joint operation by the Traffic and local police against dangerous driving, drunken driving, driving without helmet etc. on the intervening night of 31st December 2012 and 1st January 2013. Parents of teenagers are advised not to allow their children to drive motor cycles and other vehicles without helmets and valid driving license. Anyone found driving under intoxication, without helmet or license would face stern action under the provisions of the Motor vehicles Act 1988, apart from a recommendation to the Licensing Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands to suspend the concerned driving licence.
Needless to say, extremely strict action will be taken against anyone who thinks he can harass any ladies to ‘celebrate’. Whatever the occasion, no one has the right to cause the slightest insult to any woman. Potential criminals stand warned.
It may be mentioned here that during the last New Year the number of accused booked for rash, negligent, drunken driving and violation of other Motor vehicles rules intoxication, causing obstruction or nuisance to the general public ran into hundreds. Also, we should remember that this is a dignified evening and not an excuse to drink alcohol, dance on the roads, hold up traffic and play offensive and inappropriate music.
Police mobilization will be to the maximum to handle these situations.
