Port Blair, Jun 05: A meeting of women from Port Blair and the South Andaman areas was held at Hotel ACC Auditorium, Mohanpura, Port Blair on 04th June 2022 to discuss various problems being faced by the women in A&N Islands.
A large number of women attended the meeting. After discussion, the meeting decided to form a State Organising Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association in the A&N Islands. The meeting elected a committee of 15 members with C. Anandi and Sandhya S. Saju as Conveners.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A&N State Organising Committee explained, in brief, the difficulties being faced by the women in the country in general and those in A&N Islands in particular.
He said that attacks on women are increasing in the country and despite the enactment of a number of laws, the women are put to harassment. Rape, molestation, domestic violence, etc. are common features in the country.
The women are forced to face the adverse consequences of neo-liberal policies being pursued by the government. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU, A&N State Committee emphasized the need to form a unit of the AIDWA in these islands as an attack on women is increasing in the islands too.
Mrs. D. Hemlata, former Councillor, PBMC explained, in brief, the aims and objectives of the AIDWA and called upon the women present in the meeting to bring more and more women under the banner of AIDWA.
Ms. Preethi Narayan, Lalitha, Chitra and C. Anandi participated in the discussion and supported the proposal for the formation of the Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee of AIDWA for taking up the issues of women in these islands.
They explained how the women are tortured, harassed and put to mental tension and agony both at home and in society. Mr. D. Laxman Rao, State Secretariat Member of CPI (M) proposed a vote of thanks and called upon the women present in the meeting to strengthen the AIDWA for the dignified life of women in the islands.
