Port Blair, Apr 08: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to construct a dam or major water catchment area in Kamorta Island so that the water crisis issue of some villages in Kamorta Island during the dry spell is addressed.
The Member of Parliament also requested to construct a check dam at Munak village for storing naturally flowing water for the use of the villagers and CC drain so that excess water can reach upto the sea.
In a letter addressed to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament mentioned that he has been informed by several village captains of Nancowry Group of Islands that certain regions of Kamorta Island are facing a serious water crisis and during the dry season, the water scarcity issue reaches its peak.
According to the village captains there is a serious water shortage in Champin, Kakana, Vikas Nagar, Pilpillow, Enaka etc villages during dry spell.
The Member of Parliament added that there was a proposal of building a dam or major rain catchment area in Kamorta islands long back but not much attention was paid in this issue.
Considering the genuine issue, he requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor to construct a dam or major water catchment area in Kamorta Island so that the water crisis issue of these villages during dry spell is addressed.
