Port Blair, Apr 08: Mr. S Vasudevan Nair, Zilla Parishad Member of Hut Bay has requested the Chief Secretary for proper maintenance of Forest Corporation Barrack at Haddo for the use of passengers from other Islands viz Little Andaman Katchal, Nancowry C/Bay, etc.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. Nair informed that before the closure of Forest Corporation in the year 2017, the labour barrack was maintained by the A&N Forest Plantation Development Corporation and the labourers working in the various Islands under the corporation used to stay in the said barrack during their visit to Port Blair for medical treatment etc.
He pointed out that after the closure of said corporation, the said labour barrack lost all sheen due to lack of repair and maintenance.
He alleged that taking advantage of this situation now many private labourers and private vegetable venders have illegally occupied the building and are staying in the said labour barrack and creating a nuisance in the premises of the said barrack.
He added that on the other hand due to the non-availability of proper accommodation for the Inter Island passengers during their visit to Port Blair for medical treatment and other official purposes, many people have to pay huge amounts for boarding and lodging.
