Port Blair, Nov 26: Eye patients of Andaman & Nicobar Island are in distress as no intraocular lenses (IOLs) Surgery is being conducted at present at G B Pant Hospital, due to non-functioning of Microscope equipment’s Lens, patients allege.
It is learned that from the past two years in the GB Pant Hospital, Microscope equipment’s Lens is not working which is very important equipment for eye surgery.
The GB Pant Hospital is the only referral hospital in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, especially for the poor. However, due to interruption in the surgery, the patients are forced to go to private hospitals for the same surgery, which is very expensive and beyond the reach of common people.
In this regard, when Andaman Sheekha contacted a senior officer of the Health Department who on the condition of anonymity recently said that eye surgery is going on but that particular surgery of Intraocular lenses (IOLs) is not being conducted for the last two years because of its one of Microscope equipment’s Lens is not working which is very important for surgery.
“This particular IOLs surgery is not being conducted and the lens is also very expensive, it is only available in international markets and we have already ordered for the equipment,” he added.
He later informed that within 2-3 months this equipment will be received and once the equipment is reached, immediately the IOLs surgery will also start, the senior officer added.
