Diglipur, April 06: In a significant breakthrough in the brutal murder of digital media journalist Mr. Sahadev Dey, the Andaman & Nicobar Police has recovered key evidences believed to be directly linked to the crime. The deceased was the Chief Editor of a prominent digital news channel, Republic Andaman and his murder on the night of March 29, 2025, has sent shockwaves across Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to sources, the Diglipur police unit, during a field investigation on Friday, led the accused persons to main accused Mr. S. Gangaiah’s Campus at DB Gram village, where the victim’s body was allegedly disposed of by burning.
In the presence of the forensic team, the police recovered what is believed to be the murder weapon from a room. Also discovered at the site was a charred wristwatch, reportedly belonging to the victim.
Further investigations and intense interrogation of the accused led the police to Kerala Junction near Mayabunder, where the victim’s missing bag was yesterday found hidden under a culvert. The bag contained crucial items, including Mobile phone, Personal diary, News channel ID (logo) and Other personal documents.
Police believe the suspects deliberately hid the bag to mislead investigators and give the impression that the victim had voluntarily disappeared from the Mayabunder region.
Meanwhile, the arrested individuals have been identified as Mr. S. Gangaiah (48), s/o S. Salapathi, resident of RK Gram, Diglipur, Mr. Rama Subramanian, s/o Alagu, native of Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu, currently residing at DB Gram, Mrs. Bitika Mallik (38), w/o Binoy Biswas, resident of Kalipur, Diglipur and Mr. Ramesh (45), s/o Murugeshan, resident of DB Gram. According to police sources, all four accused have confessed to their involvement in the crime.
The police are now preparing to produce the accused in court tomorrow and are expected to seek judicial custody (JC) for further investigation.

A&N Islands to Host First-Ever FIDE Rapid Rating Chess Tournament Under Floodlights
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 6:The Directorate of Education and the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs A & N Administration, in collaboration with the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association, is set to organize the first-ever FIDE Rapid Rating Open Chess Tournament- ‘The Andaman-Nicobar Chess Mahasangram 2025’ in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The tournament will take place on April 19-20, 2025, at Netaji Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram, in Open Ground, under Floodlights. This event is open to all players, providing participants with the opportunity to earn official FIDE Rapid Ratings, a great chance for chess enthusiasts to gain recognition and boost their rankings.
There is no entry fee for the tournament; however, AICF Registration for the year 2025-26 is mandatory for all participants. The last date for registration is April 12, 2025, by 5.30 PM.

Checkmate on Streets” captivates Chouldari with Community Chess Celebration
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 06: The 3rd Edition of “Checkmate on Streets – Chess for Everyone” concluded with great energy and community spirit this evening at Chouldari Junction, South Andaman, drawing an enthusiastic and diverse crowd of chess lovers from the local community and beyond.
Organized as a unique street chess initiative, the event transformed the busy Chouldari junction into a lively, open-air chess arena, where enthusiasts of all ages engaged in friendly yet spirited games. The vibrant street-side atmosphere, filled with spectators, laughter, and thoughtful moves, truly brought the spirit of the game alive.
The event was formally inaugurated by Mr. Mohan Halder, Ex-Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Chouldari, who made the ceremonial first move on the giant garden chess board against Mr. Mohd. Irshad Ahmed, Assistant Director (PE/Sports), Department of Education, setting the tone for an exciting evening of chess.
The event received an overwhelming response from the local community, with participants displaying great enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and a shared love for the game. To honour their participation, all players were felicitated with gifts as a token of appreciation for their passion and commitment.
More than just a chess event, Checkmate on Streets once again proved to be a celebration of community, camaraderie, and intergenerational bonding – showcasing how the timeless game of chess continues to inspire and unite.

Fishermen Alerted as Squally Weather and Rough Seas Continue Over A&N Coast
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 6: Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely over A&N coast. Sea condition is likely to be rough. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till 07.04.2025 over A&N coast.
One Stop Centres Across A&N Islands Offer Vital Support for Women in Distress
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 6: Under the Mission Shakti Scheme of GoI, the UT Administration is implementing the One Stop Centre Scheme, which provides integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence during distress both in private and public spaces. The One Stop Centres are functioning under one roof to facilitate immediate, emergency, non-emergency services access to a range of services including Medical, Legal, minimum 5 days temporary shelter, Police assistance, Psychological and counselling support to fight any forms of violence against women.
Presently, 3 One Stop Centres are functioning in Junglighat near AYUSH Hospital for South Andaman, North & Middle Andaman in Zonal Library building at Mayabunder and in Nicobar at Perka Head Quarter. The distress women can reach OSC South Andaman over phone 03192-234221. For OSC North & Middle Andaman one can contact 03192-273009 and for OSC Nicobar 03193-265141/ by self-visiting/through Anganwadi Workers/ relative, friends and public servant. Since the inception of One Stop Centre, various cases have been handled in these Centres.
Any aggrieved women can approach these One Stop Centres for redressal of their grievances and amicable settlement of minor issues within the family and other issues concerning women safety and security in urban, rural and tribal area.
PBKR Organizes Awareness Programme on Mental Health, Drug Abuse, and Child Safety for Nodal Teachers and Health and Wellness Ambassadors of South Andaman
Port Blair Guru Ki Rasoi, a local organization dedicated to community welfare, has successfully organized a comprehensive Awareness Programme focused on Mental Health, Drug Abuse, and Child Safety. The event was specially designed for Nodal Teachers of the School Health Programme (SHP) and Health and Wellness Ambassadors (HWAs) from the South Andaman region.
The programme aimed to equip these influential educators and community leaders with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to address these critical issues in their respective schools and communities. The event brought together key stakeholders from the education and health sectors to discuss the importance of mental health support, the growing concern of drug abuse, and the safety of children in an ever-evolving world.
Key Highlights of the Awareness Programme:
•Mental Health Awareness: Sessions focused on identifying mental health challenges among students and community members, reducing stigma, and providing resources for support.
• Drug Abuse Prevention: Experts highlighted the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among youth, and shared preventative measures and intervention strategies.
• Child Safety: The importance of creating safe environments for children was emphasized, with discussions on how to recognize and report signs of abuse or neglect.

It provided a platform for participants to share experiences, ask questions, and receive guidance on addressing these issues in their daily work.

Village Library Inaugurated at Mithakhari to Foster Literacy and Learning
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 6: As part of ongoing efforts to promote learning, reading books and community engagement, a village library has been inaugurated in the Gram Panchayat Mithakhari, South Andaman in the first phase. The village library is poised to become a vital resource for the community, providing access to wealth of information, educational materials and recreational reading. The initiative aims to empower students, foster a love for reading and promote literacy in the region. The momentous occasion was graced by the esteemed presence of the Director of Education, Shri Vikram Singh as the chief guest.
In his address on the occasion, the Director (Education) highlighted the importance of reading and it is an excellent way to acquire knowledge and learn new concepts. He further stated that reading exposes us to wide range of words, phrases and language structure, which can help improve our vocabulary and communication skills. Sonalika Publication has donated books supporting to setup the library while the collection enrich the growth of the library. Large number of students, villagers attended the function and participated in the various activities.

Innovation Hub at The Science Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram: A Platform for Creativity and Innovation
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 06: The Science Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram has established an ‘Innovation Hub’ for the benefit of the school & college students. The objective of the Hub is to engage students in developing new designs and fabricate new items, innovative projects, products & crafts after school hours on Saturday & Sunday. The innovative experiment shall promote independent thinking, problem solving ability and also generate innovative ideas.
Since inception, around 2000 students have visited the Hub, many enthusiasts have also enrolled as annual members and dropped their innovation ideas in the ‘Idea Box’. The membership details are as under: –

62nd National Maritime Day Observed by Directorate of Shipping Services, Sri Vijaya Puram
Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 06: The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), under the aegis of the Administration, observed the 62nd National Maritime Day today, commemorating India’s rich maritime heritage. This year’s theme, ‘Samriddh Sagar – Viksit Bharat Yevam Neel Arth Aur Harit Vikas Ke Liye Yuva’ (Prosperous Ocean-For a Developed India, Blue Economy and Green Growth through Youth), reflected the integral role of youth in shaping a sustainable and developed maritime future.
The Day’s observance commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Captain. Beal’s grave, honouring the maritime pioneers whose contributions laid the foundation for seafaring in these Islands. The ceremony was attended by the Director and Deputy Director of Shipping Services, SCI, Members of the Boat Owners’ Associations, DSS staff and other maritime stakeholders.
Participants assembled at Choulanga Jetty, Marine Dockyard, where the Red Insign Flag was ceremoniously hoisted by the Director, Shipping Services, Mr. Parvesh Ranja Jha. This was followed by addresses from both the Director and Deputy Director, who emphasized the significance of National Maritime Day and underscored the importance of youth engagement in advancing the blue economy and green growth. They also highlighted the Directorate’s ongoing initiatives supporting a sustainable maritime future and contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
As part of the celebration, a spirited Tug of War competition between Afloat and Dockyard Sections of the Directorate was a key highlight, fostering camaraderie and enthusiasm among the staff. The Afloat Section emerged victorious in the friendly contest.
To reinforce the commitment to environmental sustainability, a tree planting ceremony was organized at Marine Dockyard, symbolizing the Directorate’s dedication to eco-conscious maritime practices.
The day’s activities served as a heartfelt tribute to India’s maritime legacy and reaffirmed the DSS’s commitment to excellence in shipping services, youth participation, and sustainable development.
