Mayabunder, March 9: The acute water crisis in Mayabunder, where residents were receiving water only once every six days, is set to improve following swift intervention by the authorities.
In response to concerns raised in a letter dated March 7, 2025 by Mr. Abdul Siddique former Pramukh of Mayabunder, a decisive action was taken on March 8, when the Superintendent Engineer of the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) was deputed to Mayabunder to assess the situation.
Today, a high-level discussion was held at the APWD Guest House, Mayabunder, between Mr Tej Bahadur, Superintendent Engineer, APWD; Mr. Abdul Mubeen, Assistant Engineer, Sub-Division No-02, NACD, APWD Mayabunder; and Mr. Abdul Siddique, former Pramukh of Mayabunder.
Following directives from Mrs. Nandini Maharaj (IAS), Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman, an immediate action plan was formulated. A joint inspection, led by the Superintendent Engineer, along with Mrs. Rajavalli (Executive Engineer) and Mr. Abdul Mubeen, identified a viable water source at Birsha Nagar under the Pahalgaon Panchayat.
As part of the remedial measures, pipeline laying work from the Birsha Nagar water source will commence within a week to ten days. Once completed, this initiative is expected to reduce the water supply interval from six days to two or three days, significantly alleviating the hardships faced by the residents.
Expressing gratitude for the swift response, Mr. Abdul Siddique acknowledged the efforts of the Deputy Commissioner, the APWD team, and all involved officials for their proactive approach. He also emphasized the need for a long-term, sustainable solution to prevent such crises in the future.

AATO Felicitates Women Achievers on International Women’s Day
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 09: AATO Felicitates Women Achievers on International Women’s Day at ZSI Auditorium Andaman Association Of Tour Operators under the leadership of Mr. M.Vinod ,President ,celebrated International Women’s Day in a befitting manner on 8th March ,2025 at ZSI Auditorium,Haddo .
The programme started with Lighting of Lamp by dignitaries and the welcome speech was delivered by Mr. M.Vinod, President, AATO.
The function was graced by eminent resource persons which included Dr/ Rasheeda Iqbal,Advocate Suparna Biswas, Dr/ Nazia Rasheeda and Miss Samhita Veda Acharya. The Resource persons gave talks on their respective subjects and motivated the woman entrepreneurs present in the auditorium
Office Bearers and Members of Aato were also present during the programme. Andaman Association Of Tour Operators Felicitated Women Achievers from the Islands for their contribution in tourism industry , Women Achievers who were Felicitated included Guide from Water Sports ,Life Guards, Kayaking instructor, Auto Driver, Dive Instructor, Tourist Guide from Chatham, Driving school instructor, Hoteliers and Jetty Operation Staff.

Commemoration of 1857 Freedom Fighters’ Arrival in the Islands to be held at Chatham Memorial
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 09: A solemn function will be organized at the Chatham Memorial on 10th March, 2025 at 0800 hours to commemorate the arrival of the first batch of Freedom Fighters of 1857 in the Islands. Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands and Vice Chairman, Islands Development Agency, will lay a wreath at the Memorial and others.
All have been invited to join the function to pay tribute to the heroes of the First War of Independence.
Ration Rasheed Foundation Host Yoga Awareness Program on International Women’s Day
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 09: Ration Rasheed Foundation, in association with GD Goenka Health Care, took a significant step toward women’s health, self-care, and empowerment by organizing a Yoga Awareness Program. This initiative emphasized the importance of physical, mental, and emotional well-being, encouraging women to prioritize their health.
The event featured esteemed guests Fareeda Bibi (Hope Foundation), Sarika Verma (Dietician & Nutritionist expert) and Battini Ramesh Kumar (Yoga instructor) who shared their valuable insights on well-being, fitness, and nutrition, providing women with practical tools for a healthier lifestyle.

74th Batch of Recruit Police Constables (Executive) Successfully Completes Training at Police Training School, Prothrapur
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 09: The Police Training School (PTS), Prothrapur, celebrated the successful completion of training for the 74th Batch of Recruit Police Constables (Executive) with a grand Passing Out Parade held at the Parade Ground of Police Training School, Prothrapur on 08th March 2025. The ceremony marked the culmination of months of rigorous training for 248 recruit trainees, who are now ready to serve the citizens of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and integrity.
The event was graced by senior officers of the Andaman & Nicobar Police, retired police personnel, and the proud families of the recruits, who witnessed the transformative journey of their loved ones into guardians of law and order.
Mr. Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Police, presided over the ceremony as the Chief Guest. He took the ceremonial salute and inspected the parade, commending the recruits for their impeccable discipline, precision, and unwavering commitment. In his address, Mr. Dhaliwal emphasized the critical role of the newly inducted constables in upholding the rule of law and adapting to the evolving challenges of modern policing. He highlighted the significance of the new criminal laws enacted from July 1st, 2024, which have redefined the landscape of law enforcement. Mr. H.S. Dhaliwal, IPS, DGP, A & N Islands emphasized that trainees must serve the community in a manner that inculcates trust and confidence in the public.
The oath of service was administered by Mr. Uma Shankar, DANIPS, Principal of the Police Training School, in the presence of the Chief Guest and Mrs. Sindhu Pillai. A, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order/Training). The oath symbolized the recruits’ solemn commitment to protect and serve with honour and integrity.
Adding to the significance of the event, Dr. Dharmesh Kumar Prajapati, Registrar, Rashtriya Raksha University, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Mr. Aaditya Purohit, Research Officer, Vice Chancellor Office, Rashtriya Raksha University, participated in the ceremony. They administered the Rashtriya Raksha University oath and awarded Degree/Diploma certificates to the trainees, recognizing their academic and professional accomplishments.

Directorate of Information Publicity & Tourism Celebrates International Women’s Day 2025 with Enthusiastic Activities
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 09: The Directorate of Information Publicity & Tourism today celebrated International Women’s Day 2025 in a befitting manner with the theme ‘She Builds BHARAT’, emphasizing the crucial role of women in nation-building.
To mark the day, a function was organized at Teal House, in which the Director, IP&T, Mr. Azharuddin Zahiruddin Quazi, IAS, was the chief guest. A ceremonial cake cutting was also held with the participation of women folk gathered in good numbers. This special day honours the achievements of women across all national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, and political boundaries.
In his brief address, the Director (IP&T), acknowledged the role of women in different fields and their contributions in Nation building. As part of the celebration, the Office of IP&T organized a series of engaging activities, including Musical Chair, Passing the Ball, Antakshiri Competition etc. All the women enthusiastically participated in these events, and the winners were awarded prizes.

Emphasize was also laid alternative dispute redressal mechanism including lok adalats to amicably settle disputes between the parties in a situation where NO ONE LOSES.
The Bench of the National Lok Adalat at Mayabunder was presided over by Mr. Subhajit Basu, the Additional District & Sessions Judge, North & Middle Andaman -cum- Chairman, Sub-Divisional Legal Services Committee, Mayabunder as Chairman alongwith learned Advocate Mr.
Sudip Sutradhar and Social Worker Mr. Saw Thomson as Members wherein 100 number of pre-litigation cases relating to the defaulters of BSNL, cases of civil disputes, 57 pre-litigation cases of Bank recovery and 112 number criminal cases involving petty offences were placed for disposal. The Bench at Mayabunder disposed 16 pre-litigation cases of BSNL thereby leading to a cash collection of Rs. 10,900/- out of the long pending claim of Rs.18,711/- giving relief to the litigants, 15 pre-litigation cases of Bank Recovery thereby leading to a cash collection of Rs. 12,95,000/-out of the long pending claim of Rs.17,59,965.62 giving relief to the litigants.
Furthermore 60 criminal compoundable cases were settled leading to a cash collection of Rs. 1,53,100/- in the form of fine.
The Bench at Circuit Court at Diglipur was presided over by Mr. Somnath Das, the Judicial Magistrate First Class -cum- Civil Judge Junior Division, North & Middle Andaman, Mayabunder as Chairman alongwith Id. Advocate Mrs. Ranjita Sarkar and Social Worker Mr. Shyamal Debnath as Members wherein 37 criminal compoundable cases and 150 pre-litigation cases of BSNL & Bank Recovery. This Bench disposed 13 pre-litigation cases of BSNL & 21 cases of Bank Recovery thereby leading to a cash collection of Rs. 26,05,617/- out of the long penging claim of Rs.26,06,517/- giving relief to the litigants.
Furthermore 28 criminal compoundable cases were settled leading to a cash collection of Rs. 95,900/- in the form of fine.
There was a great enthusiasm amongst the defaulters and litigants and the active cooperation from all the stakeholders of both Mayabunder and Diglipur made the National Lok Adalat at North & Middle Andaman District a grand success.
DLSA and IHRCCO Organize Legal Awareness Programme on Women’s and Senior Citizens’ Rights for International Women’s Day
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 09: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the District Legal Services Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in collaboration with the International Human Rights & Crime Control Organization (IHRCCO), organized a Legal Awareness Programme on the Rights of Women and Senior Citizens at Eastern Gate, Lamba Line, Sri Vijaya Puram yesterday.
The programme was graced by Mr. Sudhir Kumar, Hon’ble District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, DLSA, A&N Islands, along with Mrs. Arkabrati Neogi, Ld. Chief Judicial Magistrate, South Andaman-cum-Secretary, DLSA, A&N Islands, Mrs. Preeja Menon, Ld. Advocate, panel of DLSA, A&N Islands, and members and volunteers of IHRCCO.
In his address, Mr. Sudhir Kumar emphasized the importance of legal awareness for women and senior citizens and elaborated on their legal protections under various laws, including Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961,Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 and Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. He highlighted the role of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in providing free legal aid, mediation services, and access to justice for the marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.
Mrs. Saraswati Narayan, State President, IHRCCO A&N Islands, briefed the gathering about the Organization’s mission and vision in safeguarding human rights and ensuring justice for all. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Vimala Venkatesh, State Vice President, IHRCCO, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries and participants for their valuable contributions.
