Sri Vijayapuram, February 10: The Zonal Agriculture Office Diglipur, Department of Agriculture, A&N Administration in collaboration with the National Bee Board, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, New Delhi is organizing a two-days District Level Training Programme on ‘Scientific Bee Keeping – Role of Bees in Agriculture and its Economics’ from 10th to 11th February, 2025 at Diglipur.
The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri Vasant Prasad Dabholkar, IAS (P) Assistant Commissioner, Diglipur in the presence of Guest of Honour Shri Dipankar Mistry, Pramukh, Panchayat Samity in the Conference Hall of GPOA Building, Diglipur today on 10.02.2025.
In his address, the Chief Guest, praised the efforts of Agriculture Department in bringing awareness about Scientific Bee Keeping among the farmers by conducting a District Level Training at Diglipur. Emphasizing on the vast rich bio-diversity available in the Islands with extensive forest cover and favorable climatic conditions, there is great potential for exploring on this aspect. He encouraged the farmers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to adopt Bee keeping not only for honey production but also for its pollination benefits. He also emphasized on adopting beekeeping as a lucrative self-employment opportunity.
Shri Dipankar Mistry, Pramukh, Panchayat Samity, the Guest of Honour shared his insights with the participants and emphasized on preservation of honey bees for increased agricultural production. He appealed to the participants to practice honeybee rearing in their field and avail the benefit under the High Value Agriculture scheme.
Smti Shirly Thomas, Joint Director (Agri), N & M Andaman briefed the august audience about Beekeeping being a vital agri-input in crop pollination thereby increasing the agriculture production. She also briefed about the NHM Schemes –Pollination support under MIDH for beekeeping wherein a beneficiary is provided with Rs 800/- as subsidy per bee hive box and Rs. 800/- per bee colonies.
Dr. V. Damodaran, Sr. Scientist and Head KVK, North & Middle Andaman advocated for Bee keeping by SHG and farmers, as it is benefitted for pollination of the fruits, vegetables and oil seeds crop.
Smti Anita Mondal, Pradhan Keralapuram Gram Panchayat and Shri Swapan Kumar Das, Pradhan Gandhinagar also participated in the program and encouraged the participants to take maximum benefits out of the programm.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering, Smti Arti Singh, Assistant Director (Agri) Diglipur briefed the participants with the objective of the training i.e. to encourage and promote bee keeping as a viable livelihood option for rural communities and also improving the crop productivity with the aim to enhance knowledge and skills in scientific beekeeping practices. She further highlighted the importance of beekeeping in agriculture.
During the technical session, various aspects of Beekeeping viz. Introduction to Bee Keeping, Developing sustainable bee keeping practices and understanding bee colonies and their communication, Multiplication techniques of Bee colonies, overall bee management etc. were dealt by the expert speakers from KVK, N & M Andaman and Agriculture Department, N & M Andaman.
A showcase of Honeybee box, appliances used for honeybee rearing and protective gears were also displayed and briefed to the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, other dignitaries and the participants by Shri Riktik Baroi, Junior Agriculture Assistant, Diglipur. The first day of the training programme concluded with an interactive session, where farmers had the opportunity to seek expert guidance on improving their beekeeping skills.
Altogether, 109 participants, including Progressive Farmers, SHG members and Departmental extension functionaries of N & M Andaman District actively participated in the training programme, gaining valuable insights into scientific beekeeping techniques.
The programme ended with vote of thanks proposed by Smti Seena Pillai S. J, Agriculture Officer (I/c).
The second day of the District Level Training Programme will be field visit to SCSD Farm, VS Pally and Multipurpose Farm, Keralapuram wherein the participants will be provided with hands on training –cum-demonstration on scientific rearing of honey bee with special reference to establishing new box, its maintenance, honey harvesting and its extraction.

Capacity Building Program on Competency-Based Learning for PGTs Underway in A&N Islands
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 11: A 5 day Capacity Building Program on Competency Based Learning and Assessment for PGTs (Physics & Chemistry) of the Department of Education, A & N Administration is being organized by the Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with the State Institute of Education, Sri Vijaya Puram from Feb.10 to 14, 2025 in the Conference Hall of Shiksha Sadan. This program will provide teachers with tools to create engaging learning experiences that assess students’ actual competencies preparing them for real world challenges and fostering a more dynamic skilled oriented educational eco system.
Prof. P.C.Agarwal, Principal, RIE, NCERT, Bhubaneswar and Shri Vikram Singh, Director (Education), A & N Administration graced the occasion as special guest during the inaugural function.
In his address, the Director (Education) emphasized on qualitative improvement in teachers which in turn enhance the quality to education in UT. The Principal, RIE, Bhubaneswar spoke on NEPs vision on competency-based education which will transform traditional teaching methodologies into competency-based approaches by targeting key subjects Physics and Chemistry.
The training will provide teachers with tools to create engaging learning experiences that assess students’ actual competencies preparing them for worldwide challenges. Earlier, the Principal, State Institute of Education, Smt. Sangeeta Chand welcomed the gathering.
National Science Day 2025: Painting Competition Announced for College Students
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 11: National Science Day is celebrated every year on the 28th of February to mark the Discovery of Raman effect by the Indian Physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, who was honoured with many awards and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The Government of India designates this day as National Science Day in the year 1986 and since then, various programmes are being organized across the country. The Department of Science and Technology, A & N Administration also celebrate this occasion by organizing various programmes.
As part of the celebration, the Department of Science & Technology is organizing a Painting Competition for College students on the theme ‘Science for a Sustainable Future’ at Science & Technology Bhawan, Department of Science & Technology, Dollygunj, Sri Vijaya Puram. Interested students can register their names with Shri P. Senthil Kumar, Artist of the Department of S&T over Mobile No. 9474213985, or they can directly come to the Venue on 26th February, 2025 before 9 am. ‘Kriti’ Craft Bazaar Inaugurated at DBRAIT Showcasing Local Talent
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb.11: The 2 day long Exhibition-cum-Bazaar ‘Kriti’- a craft bazaar being organized by Skill Development Program (SDP) Trainees of Fashion and Apparel Designing Course, DBRAIT was inaugurated by Ms. Smitha R, IAS, Secretary (Power), A&N Administration as chief guest today at TGCE Hall, Middle Point. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of handmade garments, handicraft and artworks with intricate and exquisite pieces of stylish and vibrant designs.
Inaugurating the Exhibition-cum-Bazaar, the chief guest expressed her appreciation for the trainees’ dedication and creativity emphasizing the importance of supporting and promoting local crafts. She encouraged the trainers and the organizers of DBRAIT to take up more and more such initiatives and explore the possibility of skill and entrepreneurship to make the Island Aatmanirbhar Dweep. The chief guest was overwhelmed to witness the variety and volume of work done by the SDP trainees in developing exquisite handcrafted creations, garments and utility items of daily use.
Earlier, Dr. Utpal Sharma, Principal (DBRAIT) commended the team efforts of both the organizing team of DBRAIT and the Skill Development Trainees and Trainers for organizing the event on such a large scale.
The Kriti Craft Bazaar will be open for the general public tomorrow till 7 pm offering a unique opportunity to witness the craftsmanship and intricacy of the creations by local youth. A total of 196 trainees across 7 Centres from all over the Islands are participating in this Craft Bazaar.
Creative Competition Announced for Handicrafts Promotion by Directorate of Industries
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 11: The Directorate of Industries, A&N Administration has announced a competition where the participants will get an opportunity to showcase their creativity to create various promotional materials aimed to portray the handicrafts products under the aegis of the Department.
All the talented designers, artists, and social media content creators in the category of Students and Professionals from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands which includes Startups, Entrepreneurs in the field of Information Technology, Advertising, Media etc. have been invited to submit their innovative ideas in the form of a new logo, catchy slogans and promotional video clips that encapsulate the essence of the Department’s handicraft products.
The details of the competition categories, participants, rules and regulations etc. have been uploaded in the Website of the Department of Industries https://industries.andaman.gov.in. The last date for submission is 18th February, 2025.
Summer Vacation for Schools in A&N Islands Announced: May 1 – June 29, 2025
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 11: The Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands has declared the Summer Vacation for the year 2025, in respect of all Government, Private Aided and Unaided Schools of A&N Islands with effect from May 1 to June 29, 2025 for 60 days. All schools shall reopen on June 30, 2025.
Accordingly, the results of the home examination for the academic session 2024-25 shall be positively declared by March 31, 2025 by all schools and the new academic session shall commence from April 1, 2025.
Death Mourned
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 11: Mr. Vishal Jolly, National Executive Member of BJP and Former State President of BJP-ANI, expresses deep sorrow over the passing of Ms. Nidhi Halder, beloved daughter of Mr. Naresh Halder, Ex-Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh (N & M Andaman) and a prominent BJP leader from Diglipur.
She departed for her heavenly abode on, 11th February 2025, at Sri Vijaya Puram.
Mr. Jolly extends his heartfelt condolences and prays for the eternal peace of the departed soul. He also prays to the Almighty to grant strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
National De-Worming Day Observed Across A&N Islands to Promote Child Health
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 10: National De-worming Day was observed in all the Schools including Private Schools and Anganwadi Centers across the Union Territory today. To mark the event, a State Level Program was organized by the Directorate of Health Services in association with UT Health Mission and in close coordination with Directorate of Social Welfare, Directorate of Education today in the Conference Hall of Govt. Senior Secondary School, Mohanpura with the ultimate aim to cover children between the age of 01 to 19 years through schools and Anganwadi centers as a fixed day approach. Dr. Anil Agarwal, Secretary (Health)/Mission Director (NHM) graced the occasion as chief guest while the Director of Education was the guest of honor.
In his address, Dr. Anil Agarwal emphasized on monitoring personal hygiene, washing hand before eating and after defecation with soap and water, wearing shoes/slippers, washing fruits and vegetables to prevent worm infestation and also the need for the students, teachers and parents to understand the importance of this program.
During the program, Dr. Avijit Roy, Joint Secretary (RCH-II) in-charge, delivered the keynote address. Dr. H.M. Siddaraju, Director of Health Services (I/C) expressed his views about the importance of the day along with efficacy of tab Albendazole without serious side effect.
Children were administered with the tablet Albendazole by the guests to mark the start of the program.
The program was attended by the Programme Officers of DHS, Medical Officers of RBSK Team, Health Educators, ANMs, AWWs, Mukhya Sevikas, Teachers and students of Govt. Senior Secondary School, Mohanpura. The program concluded with vote of thanks by Shri P. Yusuf, Health Educator, DHS.
Chess in School (CiS) Programme at GSSS Model commences today
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 11: The Chess in Schools (CiS) Programme for primary school students of Govt. Model Primary School, Aberdeen, Sri Vijaya Puram, commenced today at Govt Model Sr. Sec. School auditorium under the guidance of Mr. Vikram Singh, Director of Education, A & N Administration. The event began with a ceremonial first move on the chessboard, made by Mrs. Sangeeta Chand, Principal of GMSSS Aberdeen, graced the occasion as chief guest, in the presence of Mr. Mohd. Irshad Ahmed, AD (Sports), Directorate of Education, Sri Vijaya Puram, who attended as the guest of honour.
In her speech, Principal Mrs. Sangeeta Chand emphasized the significance of chess in fostering critical thinking and enhancing cognitive skills. She said, “Just as physical exercises are essential to keep your body fit, playing chess exercises the brain, keeping it active, alert, and sharp,” and urged the students to continue playing chess and strive to excel in the game
Mr. Irshad Ahmed, while speaking on the occasion, elaborated on the numerous benefits of chess. He explained that the game nurtures skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, and concentration, all of which play a vital role in shaping well-rounded students.
The Chess in Schools Programme aims to bring chess into classrooms, helping students develop valuable skills such as patience, focus, and critical thinking in an enjoyable setting.
The next CiS Programme session will be held at Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Sri Vijaya Puram, beginning on14th February 2025.
