Kadamtala, January 31: The dairy farmers of Kadamtala have highlighted the issue of non-availability of artificial insemination service for their cows in the region.
According to information, the dairy farmers of Kadamtala rearing cattle have been facing problems owing to non-availability of artificial insemination service for their cows for the last couple of months. The artificial insemination service for the cows was reportedly stopped in the region. As a result of which the dairy farmers are not able to get their cows artificially inseminated in time.
Andaman Sheekha Daily tried to establish contact with Veterinary Doctor of Veterinary Hospital/Sub-Dispensary Kadamtala, but the doctor was not available on phone to make any comment on it. ASD further posed questions to the Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Kadamtala, Smti Nilawati Parh and wanted to know more on the matter. The Pradhan said that she is seized of the matter, as a number of farmers rearing cows had reportedly apprised her of the problems being faced by them owing to non-availability of artificial insemination service for their cows for the last few months. She reportedly took the matter to the concerned higher officials for early redressal of the problems of dairy farmers, she said.
However, sources said that the problem has arised in dispensing the service of artificial insemination for cows due to insufficient Liquid Nitrogen and other technical problems in the Plant at Dollygunj, Sri Vijaya Puram. At present, artificial insemination facility for cows is available only in major veterinary hospitals such as Veterinary Hospital Diglipur, Veterinary Hospital Webi, Mayabunder and Veterinary Hospital Rangat. But the facility is unavailable in almost all the Sub-Dispensaries in N & M Andaman District owing to the dearth of Liquid Nitrogen in the sole Plant at Dollygunj, Sri Vijaya Puram, the source further revealed.
However, the technical problem in the Plant has been reportedly eliminated and the service of artificial insemination for cattle will reportedly soon be resumed effectively in all the sub-dispensaries as well in N & M Andaman, the source further said.

ANTCC President Calls for Promotion of Organic Farming and Issuance of Soil Health Cards to Farmers of A & N Islands
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 31: The Andaman Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee President Mr. Rangalal Halder has requested the A&N Administration to take immediate action in promoting organic farming and reducing the use of chemical fertilizers over raising concerns in the deteriorating soil health and the rising number of kidney-related ailments among Islanders.
In his letter, He said that over the years, the rampant use of chemical fertilizers has significantly affected soil fertility, causing imbalances in crop production and posing a potential threat to food security in the region. He said that the increasing reliance on these chemicals has not only degraded farmland but has also raised serious public health concerns with a surge in dialysis patients across Primary Health Centres and Community Health Centres has sparked alarm, linking excessive chemical usage in agriculture to severe health complications.
Mr. Halder has emphasized the urgent need for reducing the supply of chemical fertilizers and supporting farmers in adopting organic farming methods. He has urged the administration to introduce comprehensive training programs and incentives that will help farmers transition to organic and bio-based fertilizers, ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability and healthier food production.
In addition, he has called for the issuing of a Soil Health Card to assess farmland quality and provide farmers with crucial insights into their soil composition to make informed decisions regarding crop selection, nutrient management, and sustainable farming practices that enhance productivity while maintaining soil integrity.
Further, Mr. Rangalal Halder has urged the Administration to take swift and decisive action in this regard to create a healthier and more sustainable future for the farmers and people of the Islands.

District Administration Launches Training for SHGs to Boost Virgin Coconut Oil Production in Nicobar
Nancowry, Jan. 31: In a significant step towards empowering women and enhancing the production of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) in the Nicobar Islands, the District Administration has launched a series of training sessions for Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Conducted in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), these sessions aim to equip women with the latest techniques and technologies for high-quality VCO extraction, packaging, and marketing.
The initiative follows the recent Geographical Indication (GI) tag awarded to Nicobar’s Virgin Coconut Oil, a recognition that highlights the unique quality and traditional methods of VCO production in the region. The training sessions are designed to build on this achievement, ensuring that women involved in VCO production can maintain high standards of quality and hygiene while maximizing their income.
A meeting chaired by Shri Amit Kale, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar, and attended by Shri Aditya Sangotra, Assistant Commissioner of Nancowry and other senior officials, outlined the roadmap for the VCO industry. Key directives were issued to conduct training sessions for SHGs with master trainers from Krishi Vigyan Kendras. These sessions focus on integrating modern machinery with traditional extraction methods, emphasizing technical expertise, hygiene, and quality control.
Experts from KVKs have already conducted hands-on training for women SHGs in Kamorta, Chowra and Teresa. The sessions not only introduced advanced techniques but also reinforced the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards throughout the production process.
This training initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the VCO value chain in the Nicobar Islands.
Earlier, the CD Block Nancowry formed a producing group named ‘Manula Mathai Payuh’, comprising members from existing SHGs in Nancowry and open to participation from other SHGs in Campbell Bay and Car Nicobar. The group will aggregate surplus production from all SHGs, ensuring proper packaging, labelling, and marketing of Virgin Coconut Oil. This streamlined approach aims to enhance profitability and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for tribal women.
The training sessions are expected to have a transformative impact, enabling women to produce high-quality VCO that meets market demands while preserving the traditional methods that make Nicobar’s Virgin Coconut Oil unique.
