Long Island, Jan. 19: A one-day mass dharna is being planned by the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Merchant Association, and the general public of Long Island to voice their grievances regarding unmet demands that are critical to the well-being of the community. As per a mass petition submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of N & M Andaman, the dharna is scheduled to take place on January 28, 2025, at the Long Island Jetty premises, if their urgent demands are not addressed by January 27, 2025.
In a formal letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman on 15 January 20204, the community of Long Islands expressed their frustration over the lack of action on a previous communication submitted to the administration regarding five key issues. The letter, signed by several residents including the Pradhan of Long Island, Mr. B. Kamaraju, outlines the following charter of demands:
1. Immediate Provision of Ambulance Service: The island currently lacks a dedicated ambulance service, causing delays and complications in patient care.
2. Appointment of a Permanent Lab Technician: The Primary Health Centre (PHC) on Long Island has been operating without a permanent lab technician, severely affecting diagnostic services for the residents.
3. Night-Time Emergency Boat Service: An emergency boat service for patients during nighttime is an urgent requirement to ensure timely medical assistance.
4. Reliable Electricity Supply: Residents have demanded consistent power supply for Long Island, along with the posting of a permanent mechanic at the island’s power house to address frequent power outages.
5. Construction of Yeratta Jetty: The community has called for the construction of a jetty at Yeratta to facilitate safe embarkation and disembarkation from the local ferry service operating between Long Island and Yeratta.
The planned dharna is aimed at pressing the administration to take immediate and effective measures to resolve the issues. The organizers hope that their collective efforts will lead to tangible outcomes and ensure the timely redressal of their grievances.

PS Pahargaon Arrests Attempt-To-Murder Accused
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: In adherence to its zero-tolerance policy against crime, Police Station Pahargaon has apprehended an individual involved in a brutal attempt-to-murder incident at Shiv Colony, Dollygunj.
On 17/01/2025, based on the complaint of Mrs. Pinki Biswas, a resident of Dollygunj, a criminal case has been registered at Police Station Pahargaon against her husband. As per the complaint, the couple had been facing ongoing family disputes and frequent altercations. On 16/01/2025, a heated argument escalated, during which her husband assaulted her brutally with a daav with the intension to kill her. The victim managed to escape and a PCR vehicle promptly reached the spot, took her to PHC Garacharma and from there she was referred to GB Pant Hospital for further course of treatment.
Upon receiving the complaint, an attempt-to-murder case has been immediately registered at PS Pahargaon and a dedicated team comprising of SI Jyothi and PCs L. Horo, S Banu, Sameer Kerketta was constituted under the supervision of Inspector Mohd Elias, SHO, PS Pahargaon. The team immediately swung into action, arrested accused namely Prabhash Mondal S/o Late Prohlad Mondal (56) yrs R/o Shiv Colony Dollygunj and also recovered the weapon involved in the assault.
The entire operation was took place under the supervision of Mr. Vikas, IPS, SDPO(SA) and the overall supervision of Mr. Manoj Kumar Meena, IPS, Sr. Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District.

Island Cycling Team Wins Gold at SGFI National School Track Cycling Championship
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 19:The 68th (SGFI) National School Track Cycling Championship for U-17 Boy’s and Girl’s is presently being held at Ranchi, Jharkhand. The Island Cycling Team have won Gold Medal in Track Cycling(Team event) for under 17 years (Girls). Ms. Namita Violet, Ms. I S Bridney, Ms.Britney and Queendaline were the Gold Medalist in the team event. Individual events for Under (19) Boy’s and Girl’s will be played tomorrow.
PS Ograbraj Arrests Offenders for Attacking On-Duty Forest Officials
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: On the night of 16th January 2025, an alarming incident took place during a night patrolling operation in Port Mout, Brindaban RF – Block-1, Caddlegunj, when a team of forest officials, apprehended individuals engaged in illegal sawing down of a Padauk tree.
During the operation, one of the offenders, identified as Deepak Singh (known as Shilbu) attempted to resist arrest by wielding a machete which resulted in an injury to one of the forest workers. As the situation escalated Shilbu’s brother Ghan Shyam Singh (known as Deepu), who was armed with a machete arrived on the scene and verbally threatened the forest officials to kill them and demanded the release of his brother. In the ensuing chaos, the offenders managed to escape under the cover of darkness, taking advantage of the night hours.
In response to the seriousness of the attack and the threats posed to the government officials on duty, a formal complaint was lodged by Range Officer, Tushnabad with PS Ograbraj, leading to the registration of a case under relevant section of law at PS Ograbraj. Acting swiftly, a team consisting of ASI Ranjit Baroi, HCs Nelson Kumar Kindo & Bijoy Sarkar and PC Abubacker Siddique was quickly formed for the search and arrest of accused persons. On 17th January 2025, accused persons were apprehended and brought to PS Ograbraj for interrogation. The weapons used in the crime was recovered and seized. Later, arrested offenders were produced before the Hon’ble Court from where they were sent to Judicial Custody.
The entire operation was conducted under the leadership of SI Devanand Pathak, SHO PS Ograbraj under the command of Mr. Brij Mohan Meena, DANIPS, SDPO Bambooflat and overall supervision of Mr. Manoj Kumar Meena, IPS, Sr. Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District.

CITU Holds Mass Demonstration to Observe Mazdoor-Kisan Unity Day
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: At the call jointly given by CITU, AIKS, etc. at Delhi to observe 19th January, 2025 as Mazdoor-Kisan Unity Day throughout India, to mark the 42nd year of the first All India Strike of workers and farmers on 19th January, 1982 in which ten workers and farmers were killed throughout the country in the firing by police, the CITU organised a Mass Demonstration at 10 a.m. today (19th January, 2025) in front of Municipal Council office, Aberdeen Bazar. R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU Andaman & Nicobar State Committee inaugurated the programme. Addressing the gathering he briefly explained the first nation-wide joint strike by farmers and workers of 1982 and said that the farmers are currently on agitation for the last one year in Delhi and surrounding States with their genuine demands.
Addressing the gathering D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee said that the strike on 19th January, 1982 was an important step in the journey of change in India. The day witnessed 10 workers, peasants and agricultural labourers making supreme sacrifice in different parts of India in brutal repression unleashed by the governments. He said that even after 42 years of the first joint strike of workers and farmers, their condition remain pathetic.
Addressing the gathering Dr Gouranga Majhi, President, A & N State Committee of All India Kisan Sabha, said that the the urban and rural wrkers and farmers joined together in 1982 all over the country which was one of the most glorious episode in the history of militant struggles after independence.
CITU State Secretaries P. Sathyapal, SP Kalairajan, Anand Rajan and M. Yugander and S. Chidambaram, Vice President, AIKS State Committee led the mass demonstration. Despite being a Sunday, a large number of workers representing various trade unions at Port Blair urban area participated in the programme.
NCC Cadets visit Naval Establishments as Part of SNIC-2025
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: On Day 6 of Special National Integration Camp (SNIC), NCC cadets toured key Naval establishments in Sri Vijaya Puram, accompanied by Lt Cdr Reyaz Farooq, Commanding Officer, 1(AN) Naval Unit NCC. The visit included the Floating Dock Navy (FDN), where cadets learned about docking vessels for maintenance, and the MARCOS Base, where they observed the elite Special Forces and viewed various weapons / tactical gears on display.
Lt Cdr Reyaz Farooq shared his firsthand experience, enriching their understanding of naval operations. The experience inspired cadets to explore careers in the Armed Forces and strengthened their appreciation for National Security.
SBI RSETI Launches Training Programme on Fast Food Stall Udyami for Divyangjan Trainees
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: The State Bank of India Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI), Sri Vijaya Puram commenced the 10 days Training Programme on Fast Food Stall Udyami for the candidates of CRC (Composite Regional Centre) Brookshabad. About 20 trainees have enrolled for the programme. Most of the trainees belong to the rural areas and are Divyangjans.
The inaugural function was organized at CRC Centre Brookshabad, in which, Mr. Siddhartha Gupta, Regional Manager, SBI, Sri Vijaya Puram was the chief guest. In his inaugural address, the Regional Manager expressed happiness in joining hands with CRC for imparting the training and also assured all support for the participants including arrangement for transportation from residence to the Institute. He also shared the immense potential available in the Fast Food Stall and urged the trainees to make best use of the training sessions in shaping their future.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Ms Sumitamol, Director, CRC lauded the efforts of SBI RSETI in organizing skill development training for CRC candidates. Mr. Ummar Farooq, Chief Manager, UTLBC informed the trainees about the initiative being taken by Govt. of India in imparting skill to the unemployed youth and to become Atmanirbhar. He also informed that the course being free of cost, the trainees should not miss any of the training sessions. The function ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. C Raj, Director of RSETI.
Prohibition on Single Use Plastic (SUP) Items in Sri Vijaya Puram and A&N Islands
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: All Producers, Stockiest, Retailers, Shopkeepers, e-Commerce Companies, Street Vendors, Commercial Establishments (Malls/ Marketplace/ Shopping Centers/ Cinema Houses/ Tourist Locations/ Schools/ Colleges/ Office Complexes/ Hospitals & other Institutions) and general public have been urged to stop production, stocking, distribution, sale and usage of identified Single Use Plastic items with respect to the following:
As per Rule 4(2) of PWM Rules, 2016 (as amended), “The manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of following Single Use Plastic (SUP), including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, commodities have been prohibited. The ban items are:
Ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene [Thermocol] for decoration.
Plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers.
Further, as per the A& N Administration vide Notification No.186 dated 05.09.2019, the manufacture, storage, use, import, transportation, distribution and sale of Single Use Plastic items is banned in A&N Islands.
PET Bottles- Water & Beverages, including alcohol, <2L (Less than 2 litres).
Plastic Bodied Cigarette Lighters.
Sachets (Shampoo, Conditioners and similar personal care items, Mouth-fresheners, Pickle/Jam/Sauces, Spices, condiments, etc.), <15 mL (or equivalent in weight).
Single-use, plastic bodied use & throw Pens.
Plastic sheet / Pouches (transparent / coloured / layered) used for packaging of Water, Cooked Food, Gift items, etc. including bubble-wraps.
As per the A&N Administration vide Notification No.225 dated 24.09.2019, the use, manufacture and sale of plastic carry bags irrespective of its thickness, size, color and nature is also banned in A&N Islands. Similarly, selling as well as display/advertisement of Single Use Plastic (SUP) items on all e-Commerce websites is also prohibited.
All concerned entities and general public have been advised to abide by the directions and non-compliance, if found, may be intimated to the Member Secretary, ANPCC for necessary action as deemed fit.
Swift Eviction Drive by District Administration, SA Reclaims Encroached Land in Sri Vijaya Puram
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: The District Administration, South Andaman has intensified its efforts to address the issue of encroachments through continuous eviction drives across the District. This initiative aims to remove unauthorized structures and restore Government lands and public spaces from encroachments by unscrupulous elements.
In a recent drive, the Revenue Officials in coordination with Municipal Council and Police Personnel successfully removed 12 Nos. unauthorized stalls from the area between the JNRM gate and the Government Press in Sri Vijaya Puram. The action was carried out to maintain order and ensure compliance with local regulations.
Also team of Revenue officials took swift action in Chidyatapu village by removing the encroachment in government land whereby an area of 3,000 square meters of land have been successfully restored to Government Khata.
The District Administration remains vigilant in its efforts to protect government land from unauthorized constructions, ensuring that such infringements are addressed swiftly and decisively. The reclaimed land is now secured for future development and public welfare projects, ensuring its benefit for the broader community.
The District Administration urges the public to respect government property and warns that any attempts at encroachment will result in strict legal action.

SBM Ambassador visits PM Shri Sr.Sec.School Garacharama
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 19: To Check the cleanliness and sanitation under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan , Mr. Naresh Chander Lal Padmashri Awardee and Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission Andaman & Nicobar Islands , today visited the PM Shri Senior Secondary school Garacharma and interacted with the students.
Lal urged them to maintain cleanliness in their school premises as well as in their respective societies.
He also requested all the students to keep themselves away from harmful substances and encouraged them to keep themselves fit by indulging in sports and games. He also sensitized them on conserving water.
Mrs. Jyothi vice principal of the school along with Head Mistress accompanied the SBM Ambassador during the visit.
