ANPCC Urges Public and Industries to Uphold Waste Management Guidelines for a Cleaner Andaman & Nicobar
Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 24: The Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), Department of Science and Technology, Andaman and Nicobar Administration has urged the general public and industrial stakeholders to responsibly manage and dispose of waste generated in domestic and industrial setups in accordance with the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. Effective waste management is critical to maintaining the pristine environment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and ensuring the health and well-being of the community.
For domestic setups, residents have been requested to segregate waste at the source and hand over to the Municipal authorities for proper processing and disposal. Industries operating in the region have been mandated to follow best practices for waste management by implementing waste segregation, recycling and safe disposal protocols. All industrial units must ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including obtaining necessary consents from ANPCC for waste generation and treatment. Hazardous industrial waste should be disposed of through authorized agencies and untreated wastewater must not be discharged into the environment. Industries have also been encouraged to adopt cleaner technologies and reduce waste generation at the source.
The public have been urged to avoid open dumping and burning of waste, as these practices can lead to air, water, and soil pollution.
In light of the growing concern regarding cigarette and bidi butt litter, ANPCC also highlights the importance of their proper disposal. Cigarette and bidi butts, though small in size, pose a significant environmental threat due to their non-biodegradable components and toxic chemicals. Local authorities have been requested to include the provisions in Municipal Bye-laws to prohibit smoking in public areas and workplaces and to impose fines for littering cigarette butts. Commercial establishments, particularly those with designated smoking zones, must provide adequate arrangements for the collection and disposal of cigarette and bidi butts in a manner that minimizes environmental impact.
The ANPCC emphasizes that collective effort is vital to achieving a clean and sustainable environment. The cooperation of every individual and organization in adhering to waste management guidelines is crucial for preserving the unique biodiversity of A&N Islands. By reducing, reusing, and recycling waste, we can minimize our ecological footprint and contribute to a greener and healthier future. Together, let us pledge to protect our environment and ensure a sustainable legacy for generations to come.

MV Sentinel Reaches Car Nicobar Anchorage for Inspection After Collision Incident at Mus Jetty
Car Nicobar, Dec. 23:Passenger Vessel MV Sentinel, arrived at the Car Nicobar Anchorage this evening. Tomorrow, the vessel is expected to berth at the port, where MMD surveyor will board to inspect the ship and potentially grant a single-voyage permission to sail for Sri Vijaya Puram from Car Nicobar.
The ship had collided with Car Nicobar’s Mus Jetty on December 19 during berthing. A technical issue reportedly caused the ship to lose control, resulting in a moderate-speed collision. The bow of the vessel sustained damage, but fortunately, there were no injuries to passengers onboard.
After completing repairs on December 21 at Nicobar Port, the vessel resumed operations with the support of a private company, DRA, which provided free manpower, materials, and boat services. DRA, currently engaged in airport extension and resurfacing work at Nicobar Islands, played a crucial role in enabling the ship’s onward sailing.
The upcoming inspection by the surveyor is expected to determine whether the MV Sentinel can safely complete a single voyage to Sri Vijaya Puram by crossing 10 Degree Channel, for which sea worthiness is necessary sources told Andaman Sheekha Daily.
