Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 30: Addressing a press conference today, Mr. Anshuman Roy, Youth President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti, voiced deep concerns regarding the impending cessation of Air India services in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from January 1, 2025. The press meet shed light on critical challenges faced by residents, especially in medical emergencies, as Air India Express is set to replace Air India.
Mr. Roy shared a recent incident involving a critically ill patient requiring immediate airlift to Chennai or Kolkata. “Air India had a straightforward manual process for stretcher patients, ensuring quick action during emergencies. However, Air India Express mandates an online process with a 24-hour response time, which is impractical for life-threatening cases,” he explained.
Highlighting the significance of timely medical evacuation, Mr. Roy questioned the administration’s preparedness for this transition. “When lives are at stake, every minute counts. The delay caused by the new system could cost lives. What value does the government place on the lives of Andaman’s residents?” he asked.
Mr. Roy also criticized the state of healthcare infrastructure in the islands, citing a lack of specialized doctors and essential medical facilities for critical treatments such as neurology, cardiology, and advanced surgeries. “Patients already face hardships due to inadequate local facilities. The cessation of Air India services further exacerbates the problem,” he added.
During the conference, Mr. Roy urged the Union Aviation Ministry and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue urgently. He called for special provisions for stretcher patients and better airlift facilities to ensure timely medical care for island residents.
Mr. Roy encouraged islanders to support a planned campaign by Hindu Rashtra Shakti to highlight these critical healthcare and airlift concerns. “We need to ensure that no life is lost due to administrative apathy,” he emphasized.
Additionally, the Hindu Rashtra Shakti team highlighted the exodus of talented doctors from the islands, attributing it to administrative neglect and unequal contract terms. Mr. Rakeshwar Lall, State President, Hindu Rashtra Shakti questioned why local doctors, who had consistently delivered exceptional care, were not given proper incentives or recognition, leading many to resign.
In conclusion, Mr. Lall appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Aviation Minister, and the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, urging immediate action to safeguard the health and well-being of the island’s residents. “Life is invaluable, and timely medical intervention can save countless lives,” he stated.
