Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 29: Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Islands led the Aberdeen Heritage Walk on Sunday morning, accompanied by senior officers, citizens, and heritage enthusiasts. The walk highlighted the rich cultural and historical significance of Aberdeen Village, making it a memorable experience for all participants.
Aberdeen, the heart of Port Blair, has a fascinating history dating back to the late 18th century. Known for its role in the freedom struggle, Aberdeen witnessed the establishment of the penal settlement, which later became a symbol of India’s fight for independence.
The heritage walk began at the historic Netaji Club, a social and cultural hub during colonial times that still stands as a testament to the community’s spirit. The route proceeded to the Clock Tower, a prominent landmark symbolizing the area’s colonial and post-independence heritage. Participants explored Supply Lane, an area that once served as the lifeline for resources during British rule, and the Fire Brigade, which played a crucial role in safeguarding the settlement.
The walk then covered Vikas Bhawan, the administrative nerve center of the region, and concluded at the Andaman Club, a place that once hosted elite colonial gatherings and now serves as a reminder of the island’s layered history. Along the route, participants were provided insights into the architectural, administrative, and cultural evolution of these landmarks.
The Chief Secretary expressed gratitude to all participants for making the event memorable and highlighted the significance of preserving and celebrating the Islands’ heritage. The walk was a unique initiative aimed to foster greater awareness of the historical treasures that define the identity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and to connect people with the Islands’ vibrant past and promote the preservation of its heritage and the commitment of the A & N Administration’s to celebrate the Islands’ legacy and fostering awareness about its historical treasures.

 

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 29: The 37th National Under-09 Chess Championship 2024 is currently underway at Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune, Maharashtra. This prestigious seven-day event, being held from 27th December 2024 to 2nd January 2025, has brought together 570 young chess talents from across the country, including 364 boys and 206 girls.
Five promising players from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are representing the Union Territory in this championship. In the boys’ category, Sachit Bara of Invent Public School, Prothrapur, S Jyosith of PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Port Blair, and Vyom Tiwari of Naval Children School, Minnie Bay, are competing while G Disha Meenakshi and S Aadrika, both from PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Port Blair, are showcasing their skills in the girls’ category,
The Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA) extends its best wishes to all the participants.

Port Blair, Dec 29: The 12th Andaman & Nicobar State Conference of Communist Party of India (Marxist) began on 28th December, 2024 at Port Blair with a massive procession followed by public meeting at Tiranga Park. Hundreds of party workers and sympathisers participated in the mass procession which was led by D. Ayyappan, Secretary and State Secretariat Members of CPI (M).

The mass procession converged into a huge public meetng at Tiranga Park at 5 p.m. Inaugurating the public meeting, G. Ramakrishnan, Polit Bureau Member of CPI (M) said that CPI (M) is the only party in the country which conducts conferences and elect new Committees democratically from Branch level upto Central Committee.

He said that the Modi government’s policies are pushing more and more people to the brink of poverty while tax concessions of lakhs of rupees are given to corporates like Adani and Ambani.

He said that Hindutva ideology is being widely propagated with a view to have division among the people on communal lines. He said that the BJP is afraid of even uttering the name of BR Ambedkar.

Addressing the public meeting, Dr Sujan Chakraborty, Ex-MP and Central Committee Member of the party said that hundreds of revolutionaries who fought against Britishers were deported to A&N Islands, jailed in the Cellular Jail and many of them were killed by the Britishers. He further said that the Modi government is working only for the interests of corporate in the country. He said that this government is representing only the 1% of the population in the corporate while the 99% of the ordinary people are neglected.

D. Ayyappan, State Secretary briefly explained the on-going Party Conferences all over the country. Nikunjo Biswas, State Secretariat Member also addressed the meeting. B. Chandrachoodan, Chairman, Reception Committee, who presided over the meeting, welcomed the participants and leaders in the meeting. D. Laxman Rao, State Secretariat Member proposed vote of thanks.

 

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 29: Mr. Naresh Chander Lal, Padmashri Awardee and Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, visited the Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Middle Point, today to promote cleanliness and sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. During his visit, Mr. Lal interacted with the students and emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness both within the school premises and in their respective communities.
In his address, Mr. Lal encouraged the students to adopt clean habits and take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean. He stressed that students should not only focus on cleanliness at school but also play an active role in spreading awareness about sanitation in their neighborhoods.
Furthermore, Mr. Lal urged the students to stay away from harmful substances that could negatively impact their health and future. He encouraged them to focus on their physical fitness by participating in sports and games, which contribute positively to both mental and physical well-being.
Another important point highlighted by the SBM Ambassador was the need to conserve water. He appealed to the students to adopt mindful practices regarding water usage, urging them to “save water for a better future.”
Mr. L. Suku Rajan, the Vice Principal of the school, accompanied the Swachh Bharat Mission Ambassador during the visit.
