Port Blair, Nov 12: A PIL was filed against the Union Government and West Bengal Government for establishment of an examination centre for sub-ordinate and higher judiciary at Sri Vijaya Puram. Initially notice was issued to all responsible for their reply.
Today the matter was listed and it was heard before the respective counsels and after detailed arguments the Hon’ble Division Bench have directed the Government of West Bengal to take a view on the reasonable grievance of these Islands and open an examination centre for lower and higher Judiciary at Sri Vijaya Puram within 4 months from the date of order.
The Division Bench has discussed the connectivity issue, establishment of law college, few representation of Islanders at West Bengal Judiciary Service, already presence of Civil Service Examination Centre and violation of fundamental rights and held that examination centre is very much required at Sri Vijaya Puram.
The Division bench also directed to consider for relaxing the mandatory Bengali language paper for Island students.
The PIL was filed by Advocate Prohit Mohan Lal, whose efforts was also appreciated by the Division Bench. The Server copy of the Judgement is awaited.

Ladies Pipe Band of A&N Police to make National debut at 25th All India Police Band Competition
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: The Andaman & Nicobar Police proudly announces the national debut of Ladies Pipe Band at the prestigious 25th All India Police Band Competition. The event, set to take place in Shokuvi, Dimapur, Nagaland, from 16th to 22nd November 2024, will witness the participation of Bands from numerous states showcasing their exceptional talent and dedication on a national platform. This historic step marks a significant milestone, as the Ladies Pipe Band, representing the spirit and cultural heritage of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, prepares to make an indelible mark in the competition.
Formed in 2014, the Ladies Pipe Band, A&N Police initially comprised 27 volunteering female Police personnel. Over the years, the band has evolved through frequent mentorship programme from the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC). Similarly, now in 2024, while preparing for the event, the Band received a significant boost with a six-month intensive program conducted by the First Gorkha Rifles, where a total of 24 dedicated women completed the training and enhancing their capabilities in full-band march and mastering all 14 tunes required for the competition across various instruments, including pipes, tenor drums, and bass drums.
Before proceeding to participate in the National event, the Ladies Pipe Band showcased their skill and readiness by giving a splendid display of their musical prowess at Parade Ground, Army Camp, in the presence of DGP (ANI), CoS (ANC) and other senior officers.
As the Ladies Pipe Band prepares to represent the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on a national stage, their debut symbolizes the culmination of collective efforts and dedicated training. The entire community stands united in support, confident that this talented group of women will make the Islands proud.
Recruitment Rally for Agniveer Posts to Be Held at Netaji Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram from Nov. 26-30
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: Recruiting Office (Headquarters), Chennai will be conducting Recruitment Rally at Netaji Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram from Nov. 26 to 30, 2024 to enroll shortlisted candidates of online Common Entrance Exam, as Agniveer General Duty (All Arms), Agniveer Technical (All Arms), Agniveer Tradesman 10th pass (All Arms), Agniveer Tradesman 8th pass (House Keeper & Mess Keeper) (All Arms), Soldier Technical Nursing Assistant/ Nursing Assistant (Veterinary) and Agniveer (General Duty) Women in Corps of Military Police.

Dhairya NGO Advocates for Improved Ferry Services on Chatham-Bambooflat Route
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: Mr. Abdul Sajid, Vice President of Dhairya NGO, has written a letter to the Directorate of Shipping Services on behalf of the regular passengers commuting on the ferry route between Chatham and Bambooflat.
In his letter, he requested the introduction of quarterly and half-yearly pass options. Currently, commuters rely on monthly passes, which require frequent renewals—a challenge for many due to busy work schedules. Mr. Sajid’s proposal aims to ease the renewal process, providing added convenience to regular passengers.
In addition to requesting flexible pass options, Mr. Sajid also emphasized the need for more vehicle and passenger ferries on this route. With the area’s growing population and expanding settlements, congestion on ferries has increased significantly. He highlighted that the addition of more ferries would help reduce overcrowding and improve the daily commuting experience.
The letter acknowledged the Directorate of Shipping Services for maintaining well-managed ferry services and responding to past feedback. Passengers and community members are hopeful for continued improvements to ensure reliable and convenient transportation for all.
A copy of the letter was also sent to the Secretary of the Directorate of Shipping Services in Sri Vijayapuram to reinforce the importance of these requests for the local community.
Swift Rescue Operation carried out by Marine Police Operational Centre Kadamtala
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: Adding yet another precious feather to its crown, the Marine Police Operational Centre (MPOC), Kadamtala, under the Police Marine Force of the Andaman & Nicobar Police, successfully rescued four fishermen from perilous deep-sea conditions.
On 11th November 2024, a distress message was received from the Fisheries Department, Mayabunder, North & Middle Andaman, reporting that a fishing engine dinghy had drifted due to an engine failure. The vessel, carrying the four fishermen, was located approximately 16 kilometers offshore in the open sea.
Upon receiving the information, the MPOC (Kadamtala) promptly swung into action. HC/2379 K. Jagdeswar Rao and PC/2978 M.K. Giri of PMF were deployed to undertake the rescue mission and rescued the fishermen, all residents of Dignabad, Sri Vijaya Puram identified as Mr. Dharma Rao, Mr. Appalaswamy, Mr. CH Gurumurthy and Mr. CH Veeraswamy, were found safe but in need of assistance. The police personnel provided them with water and food as requested, ensuring their immediate well-being.
The disabled dinghy was then securely towed to Baratang Jetty for necessary engine repairs. The entire operation, spanning nearly four hours, was executed with precision and professionalism, concluding successfully with the safe return of the rescue team and their vessel to MPOC Kadamtala.
The swift and courageous response of MPOC Kadamtala, under Police Marine Force highlights the dedication and professionalism upon the Islanders in ensuring the safety and security of those at sea. The timely action prevented a potentially dangerous situation and ensured the well-being of the rescued fishermen.
Swift Eviction Drive by District Administration, SA Reclaims Encroached Land in Bindraban Village
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: The District Administration, South Andaman has intensified its efforts to address the issue of encroachments through continuous eviction drives across the District. This initiative aims to remove unauthorized structures and restore Government lands and public spaces from encroachments by unscrupulous elements.
In a recent drive, encroachment in the shape of temporary structure at Bindraban village was removed by the revenue officials of Ferrargunj tehsil. A total area of 0.50 Hectares of Government land was cleared of unauthorized structures and returned to its original status..
The Administration remains vigilant in its efforts to protect government land from unauthorized constructions, ensuring that such infringements are addressed swiftly and decisively. The reclaimed land is now secured for future development and public welfare projects, ensuring its benefit for the broader community.
The District Administration urges the public to respect government property and warns that any attempts at encroachment will result in strict legal action.

District and State Level Observance of World Pneumonia Day & Launch of SAANS Campaign in South Andaman District
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: The State and District level observance of World Pneumonia Day was held today, marking the official launch of the SAANS (Social Awareness & Action to Neutralize Pneumonia Successfully) Campaign. This initiative, coordinated by the District Health Society (SA) along with the State Health Society and Directorate of Health Services, aims to raise awareness and drive action on childhood pneumonia prevention and treatment. The campaign will continue until February 28, 2025.
The event, which took place at the Directorate of Industries’ conference hall, was followed by a one-day training session for ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwives) to equip them with the necessary skills to raise awareness about pneumonia protection, prevention, and treatment. The training also focused on enhancing early identification and care for childhood pneumonia cases.
Dr. Suja Anthony, Director of Health Services, graced the occasion, alongside Dr. Avijit Roy, Deputy Director/JS (FW), Dr. Sunil Kumar, Chief Medical Officer (S), Mr. B. Nagendra, District Programme Manager, DHS(SA), and Medical Officers from the Rashtriya Bal SwasthyaKaryakram (RBSK). During the event, the DHS and Deputy Director (FW) emphasized the importance of the SAANS Campaign and its goal of empowering AHSA workers and ANMs to raise awareness at the community level. The focus is on strengthening the health system to prevent and manage childhood pneumonia.
The SAANS Campaign 2024-25 carries the tagline, “Pneumonia nahi, tohbachpansahi”, which highlights the importance of a pneumonia-free childhood for healthy development.
Dr. Shweta, MO, RBSK, welcomed the gathering and stressed the need for community cooperation. The general public has been urged to support ANMs and ASHAs in their efforts to identify pneumonia cases early and ensure timely treatment for children under the age of five.
The SAANS Campaign aims to significantly reduce childhood pneumonia cases through public awareness, community engagement, and strengthened healthcare delivery. The continued support of the public is crucial in ensuring the success of this vital initiative.
CPI (M) Elects New SA Rural Area Committee with D. Laxman Rao as Secretary
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: The 5th South Andaman Rural Area Conference of CPI (M) held recently has elected a 11-member Area Committee. The newly elected Area Committee met at the side-lines of the Area Conference and elected D. Laxman Rao as Secretary of the South Andaman Rural Area Committee.
A permanent resident of Haddo, D. Laxman Rao shifted residence to Bambooflat a few years ago. A prominent person among the Telugu community in these islands, D. Laxman Rao was closely associated with various organizations of Telugu community in the past.
The newly formed Area Committee has decided to strengthen the Party and mass organizations in the South Andaman rural areas by involving people from all walks of life.
Investor Meet to Explore Fisheries and Aquaculture Opportunities in A&N Islands on Nov. 14
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India and Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration jointly with the support of NFDB, Hyderabad will be organizing an ‘Investors’ Meet’ on ‘Investment opportunities in Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of A&N Islands’ on Nov.14, 2024 at Taj Exotica, Swaraj Dweep.
The major focus of Investors’ meet is preparation of Roadmap for utilizing 65,400 MT Tuna resource potential, preparation of plan for launching of commercial Seaweed farming and Cage Culture and judicious utilization of Brackishwater area identified by A&N Administration for Shrimp Farming and Crab fattening.
The A&N Administration in its lead presentation will detail about the status of various developmental activities, recent achievements in the sector, the way forward and facilitations offered by A&N Administration for setting up Fisheries and Aquaculture establishments in the Islands. The Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Cochin will deliver a presentation session on Export Promotion from A&N Islands while Indian Council of Agriculture Research will present the Roadmap for development of Mariculture in the Islands and BoBP-IGO, Chennai will deal with a session on Development of Tuna Fisheries and Value Chain in A&N Islands.
Interactive sessions will be held with the representatives of FICCI, ASSOCHAM, Confederation of India, Seafood Exporters Association of India, Seaweed Association of India and A&N Fisheries Industry.

Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 12: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has invited applications for National Sports Awards 2024. The following National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports and games.
• The ‘Arjuna Award’ is given for outstanding performance by a sportsperson.
• The ‘Arjuna Award (Lifetime)’ will be given for lifetime contribution to sports development.
• The ‘Dronacharya Award’ goes to coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events.
• The ‘Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar Award’ is given to any corporate entity, public or private and NGOs, which has played a visible role in any or more than one area of sports promotion and development.
