Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 08: The serene Islands of Car Nicobar witnessed a vibrant celebration of culture, community and entrepreneurship with the commencement of Carnic Festival -2024 inaugurated by the chief guest, Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District yesterday at Edward Kutchat Park, Perka Village, Car Nicobar. The guest of honour, Mr. Sunny Gupta, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District, HoDs and general public were also present on the occasion.
The three days long event starting from Nov.7, 2024 is being organized by the District Administration, Car Nicobar. The Carnic Festival 2024 is a celebration of the Islands indigenous culture, featuring a range of cultural performance, traditional music, and stalls by various line Departments of Car Nicobar.
Apart from this, a total of 11 SHGs under DAY- NRLM participated and displayed handmade crafts, food items, organic home grown vegetables and traditional Nicobarese delicacies. A total of 9 stalls were allotted to SHGs and this not only provided a platform for women SHG members to showcase their skill but also fostered economic empowerment and community development and opportunity for small business to sell their handmade products. Despite lack of proper staff strength for NRLM at CD Block, Car Nicobar, the SHGs from Sawai Village sold articles worth Rs. 12,350/- and least by SHGs from Big Lapathy Village being Rs. 3752/- on the first day of the Festival. The SHGs Mela aims to empower local communities specially women to showcase their talents and boost their economic independence.
To join in the celebration, villagers from all the villages of Car Nicobar visited the venue. The festival features enthralling cultural dances, captivating music and traditional dance of Nicobarese people, attracting participants and spectators from all walks of life. The event will culminate on Nov.9, 2024.

Zonal-Level Science, Maths, and Arts Exhibition at Car Nicobar Highlights Students’ Innovations
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 08: The Education Department, Car Nicobar, has organized a vibrant Zonal Level Science, Maths, Arts, and Craft Exhibition at Priyadarshini Auditorium, Tamaloo, Car Nicobar today. The exhibition was inaugurated by the chief guest, Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District while Mr. Lionald Nicomede, Chairman of the Tribal Council was the guest of honor. In a ceremonial start, the chief guest lit the traditional lamp, signalling the beginning of a showcase of creativity and innovation by the young minds of the District.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District appreciated the students’ passion for Science, which was evident in their impressive work. Science encompasses fields like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, which can often seem challenging when we consider their impact on our lives and expectations, she said adding that Science is also fascinating, and it draws our interest deeply. In the projects presented by the children, they highlighted the importance of climate change, waste management, new technology, and environmental issues specific to the Nicobar Islands, she said.
Earlier, Mr. H. Nathaniel, Education Officer, along with Heads of Institutions, teachers, and students, welcomed the dignitaries, setting a tone of encouragement and excitement for the day.
All the three CRCs viz. GSSS Lapathy, GSSS Malacca, and GSSS Sawai exhibited impressive models and displays across Science, Mathematics, Arts, and Craft categories. Adding to the event’s appeal, food stalls were set up by GPS Jayanthi, GPS Kimious and GPS Teetop, offering a delightful variety of dishes. Additionally, a stunning flower arrangement prepared by the teachers of GPS Kinyuka and GMPS Headquarter captured the admiration of guests.
The exhibits were evaluated by a panel of jury members viz. Mr. B Hari, AE (E & M.), APWD, Mr. Anbhazagan, AE(CD), APWD, & Mr. Rathish Kumar R R, JE (E& M), APWD Car Nicobar assessed the Science, Maths, and Arts models, while representatives from the Industries Department, Mr. Tanmay Ganguly, Assistant Director and Smti Suhika Shanti, Supervisor evaluated the craft items. The exhibition witnessed a large turnout, including Heads of Departments, members of the public, and parents from various villages, all of whom expressed appreciation for the students’ creativity and hard work.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Smti Everlyn, Vice Principal of GSSS Malacca, who encouraged the selected students and their guide teachers to prepare diligently for the upcoming Rajya Stariya Bal Vaigyanik Pradarshani (RSBVP) to be held at Sri Vijaya Puram.
NAPDDR and IRCA(S/A) Conduct Awareness Program at G.S.S.School, Bathubasti
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 08: The National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), under the Directorate of Social Welfare in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, to teach students in grades IX to XII about the dangers of substance abuse. In-collaboration with the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), South Andaman, this program includes sessions and activities to help students understand the harmful effects of alcohol and drug use. The campaign began at Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti, where about 126 students, along with the Principal and teachers, attended.
The program started with a warm welcome address by Miss Shirley, PGT, Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti, setting a positive tone for the event. Mr. J. Dasan Pushparaj, Principal, emphasized the importance of the campaign and encouraged students to participate actively in the educational sessions.
Dr. M.K Mahato, Doctor (IRCA), South Andaman led a session on drug abuse prevention, emphasizing the physical and mental health risks associated with drug use, strategies for resisting peer pressure, and the importance of building supportive relationships with family and friends. He encouraged students to seek help early if they or someone they know is struggling with substance abuse, highlighting the importance of early intervention. He also informed students about the 24/7 Helpline No. 112, available for drug-related complaints and counseling, and shared his personal contact number for additional support. Frequently Project Assistant, NAPDDR, also engaged with the students, offering insights on effective study techniques and ways to stay focused. Her session aimed to guide students on avoiding negative influences and maintaining a positive mindset.
The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Thires Packiam, GTT, who expressed gratitude to the guests, students, and faculty for their active participation in this essential awareness campaign.
ANCA to conduct Selection Trials for National Under-09 & Under-13 Chess Championships 2024
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 08: The Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA) will conduct Selection Trials for the National Under-09 and Under-13 Chess Championships to select players to represent the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Selection trials will be held on November 23rd and 24th, 2024, at the ANCA Chess Centre, Dairy Farm (tentative location).
The 37th National Under-09 Chess Championship will be held in Maharashtra, and the National Under-13 Championship in West Bengal in December 2024. ANCA will select two players each in the boys’ and girls’ categories for both age groups. Eligible players for the Under-09 Championship must be born on or after January 1, 2015, while those for the Under-13 Championship must be born on or after January 1, 2011.
AICF Player Registration for 2024-25 is mandatory for participation. Players who have yet to register can complete their registration at https://prs.aicf.in/new-register
