Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 24: The 2nd Graduation Ceremony of MBBS Batch of 2018 of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) was held at Ambedkar Auditorium here this morning. Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands and Vice Chairman, Islands Development Agency graced the occasion as the chief guest in the august presence of Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, Shri Keshav Chandra, IAS, Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Smti Nandini Paliwal, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health). The function was also attended by Secretary (Health), Shri C Arvind, Special Secretary (Health), Dr. Anil Agarwal, other senior officers of Administration, proud parents and graduating students.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Lt. Governor extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the students, their families, and the esteemed members of the Institution. He said, this occasion marks a new beginning in the lives of all the young graduates present here.
The Lt. Governor said, today’s inauguration of the new Administrative and Library Wing will further strengthen the infrastructure of the Institution. The Lt. Governor remarked that the contribution of ANIIMS and the doctors of GB Pant Hospital in the health sector of these remote Islands have been immensely valuable.
Listing the major achievements of the Institution, the Lt. Governor said, this year itself, lifesaving surgeries and major trauma surgeries performed by the Hospital and Plastic Surgeon have demonstrated the excellence of this institution in the healthcare sector. Similarly, more than 250 patients have benefited from cost-free treatment using intracardiac devices, as well as minimally invasive cancer surgeries for critical diseases. These super specialty surgeries have proven that the A&N Islands, including the graduate doctors and citizens, are equally capable of fulfilling the country’s health goals.
Lauding their years of perseverance and hard work, Hon’ble Lt. Governor said, “You have worked hard to successfully earn this degree, and now you are stepping into the challenging and highly demanding field of medicine, which requires dedication, compassion, and up-to-date knowledge. It is now time for you to selflessly dedicate yourselves to the welfare of society and humanity”. “You must understand that your actions and decisions will have a deep impact on the lives of others, and therefore, it is expected that you will care for your patients with love and empathy and responsibly fulfil your duties”, the Lt. Governor urged and reminded the graduates.
Congratulating the parents, families, and mentors present on the occasion, whose invaluable contribution has nurtured these emerging healthcare professionals, the Lt. Governor said, “Through them, you too are becoming partners in the service of the nation. You have provided these young people with education in both life and medicine, inspiring them to become skilled and compassionate healthcare providers”.
The Lt. Governor further stated that for the smooth functioning of ANIIMS, medical labs are extremely important and indispensable. In this regard, he informed that today, the Labs for Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Pathology are operating efficiently here in the Islands. Additionally, the Lt. Governor said, the A&N Administration is actively working to soon commence Post Graduation Courses at ANIIMS and expressed confidence that the PG courses in five core subjects will begin soon.
Sharing the joy and success of the graduates, the Lt. Governor remarked “I also feel a sense of pride that, for the first time, so many doctors are graduating from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who will meet not only the healthcare needs of the islanders but also the entire country”.
Concluding his address, the Lt. Governor extended a heartfelt congratulations to the students on the beginning of this new chapter in their life. He expressed confidence that with the skills, ethics and sense of duty, these young doctors will be committed to the development, progress, and prosperity of the Islands as well as the nation, helping in realizing the dream of a ‘Healthy and Developed India’, he remarked.
The Hon’ble Lt. Governor presented Certificate of Excellence and citation to the top five graduating doctors on the occasion viz. Akshita, Kaushik, G. Hariharan Subbu, Anuj Kumar Tiwari and Javeria.
Earlier, the Hon’ble Lt. Governor declared the convocation open. He also virtually inaugurated the newly constructed Administrative Block and Library Block of ANIIMS on the occasion. The Hon’ble Lt. Governor also unveiled the annual report of the Institution.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Member of Parliament congratulated the graduating students and urged them to work with dedication and empathy. He also distributed certificates to the graduating students on the occasion.
Welcoming the gathering, the Director (ANIIMS), Dr. Pragya Sharma congratulated the graduating batch of 2018 and their parents on this momentous occasion. She said, this ceremony is a moment of great significance marking not only the end of an arduous academic journey but also the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the graduates.

Union Minister of Power Shri Manohar Lal to Visit A&N Islands on October 25
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 24: sHon’ble Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Govt. of India, Shri Manohar Lal will be arriving on a day’s visit to A&N Islands tomorrow (Oct. 25). Soon after arrival, the Hon’ble Minister will meet the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A & N Islands at Raj Niwas. The Hon’ble Minister of Power will hold meeting with A&N Officials of Power and Urban Development. Thereafter, the Hon’ble Minister of Power will visit NLC Solar Plant at Dollygunj and 5 MW NTPC Solar Plant at Garacharma.
In the afternoon, the Hon’ble Minister of Power will visit NSCB Island. The Minister will also visit National Memorial Cellular Jail and witness Light & Sound Show. On completion of visit, the Hon’ble Minister of Power will depart for mainland on Oct. 26.
SA District Police Pressed Hard Over Drug Peddlers, Registered Two NDPS Cases and Arrested Two Persons During this Week
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 24: In a series of successful operations conducted during this week, the South Andaman District Police have arrested two drug peddlers and seized 2.341 kg of ganja. The arrest of these drug peddlers and the seizure of such a significant quantity of ganja in just one week underscores our commitment to ensuring a drug-free society.
Based on specific intelligence inputs, the team of Police Station Aberdeen conducted targeted raids at two different locations this week. On 24/10/2024, a raid was executed at Phoenix Bay by the dedicated team led by Insp. Vishal Ram, SHO PS Aberdeen, the team comprised of Inspector Mithun Kirtania, Sub Inspector Abhishek Haldar, Head Constable S Jiju, Constables Jairaj, Mohd Rafique, Jagdish Babu, Surender Singh and Naw Elieen. The raid led to the apprehension of one Rajib Sarkar, 33 years, private worker R/o Delanipur with 2.140 Kg Ganja.
Another successful raid was conducted on 22/10/2024, near Junglighat cremation ground by the team, which led to the apprehension of one Chandveer @ Rahul, aged 29 years, R/o Junglighat with 201 grams of ganja. Cases under relevant sections have been registered against the accused persons. Investigations are ongoing to identify any further links.
The entire raids were supervised by Miss. Anushtha Kalia, IPS, SDPO South Andaman and overall supervision of Mrs. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District.

Illegal Structures Removed, 350 Sqm of Government Land Reclaimed at Prothrapur by District Administration, SA
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 24: In a concerted effort to reclaim encroached government land, an eviction drive was carried out at Prothrapur revenue village. The operation, part of ongoing efforts to clear unauthorized occupations, resulted in the successful restoration of approximately 350 square meters of government land to the Revenue Department.
The land in question, identified as part of the government revenue land, had been encroached upon with unauthorized fencing and a katcha structure. Acting upon the directions from the Revenue authorities, the eviction team dismantled the illegal structures, clearing the area and restoring it to government control.
The eviction was carried out in compliance with the provisions of the law, following due legal processes. It reflects the commitment of the District Administration to safeguard public land and ensure that unauthorized constructions are systematically removed. The recovered land will now be placed under the jurisdiction of the Revenue Department for appropriate usage in line with governmental policies.
The District Administration continues to urge citizens to refrain from encroaching upon government land and to cooperate in maintaining the integrity of public property. Such measures are vital to preserving government assets for public welfare and ensuring sustainable development in the region.

ANTCC President Urges DHS to Resolve Healthcare Issues at CHC, Rangat
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 24: The Andaman Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee President, Mr. Rangalal Halder, has formally addressed a letter to the Directorate of Health Services, bringing attention to two critical healthcare issues faced by patients at the Community Health Center (CHC) in Rangat.
In his letter, Mr. Halder highlighted the severe shortage of thyroid medication at CHC Rangat, a vital treatment for numerous patients managing thyroid-related conditions. “The unavailability of thyroid medication is causing serious health risks to many individuals dependent on daily treatment. It is imperative that the supply of these essential medicines be restored immediately to safeguard the health of these patients,” he emphasized.
Additionally, Mr. Halder raised concern about the Non-operational Thyroid checking Machine at the CHC. The malfunctioning equipment has left patients without the means to conduct regular thyroid function tests, essential for timely diagnosis and ongoing treatment.
Mr. Halder stated that “The inability to perform these tests locally is forcing patients to travel long distances, imposing both financial and logistical hardships on them.
He further requested for Urgent action to ensure that these critical services are available at CHC Rangat.

Cooperative Department Inaugurates ‘Fathers Home Creche’ for Working Parents in A&N
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 24: The Cooperative Department, A&N Administration, in a significant step towards supporting working parents has established ‘Fathers Home Creche’ in the premises of RCS Office Building, VIP Road, Sri Vijaya Puram, South Andaman. The Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Keshav Chandra, IAS, today inaugurated the much needed facility for the working parents in presence of Ms Nandini Paliwal, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Coop.), Ms Nandini Maharaj, IAS, Special Secretary (Coop.)-cum-RCS, Shri Arjun Sharma, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Swami Shudhananda Saraswati, Resident Acharya Chinmaya Mission, Smt. Komal Anand, President, ‘Pankh’ and other officials of the A&N Administration.
In her brief address on the occasion, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Coop.) appreciated the effort of the Cooperative Department in establishing ‘Fathers Home Creche’ for the benefit of the working parents. As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Women & Child Development, every establishment having fifty or more employees have to provide the facility of crèche, she said underlining the need for opening more such facilities in other Departments too.
In her address, the Special Secretary (Coop.)-cum-RCS informed that with the motive to provide a secure, nurturing, and educational environment for the children (aged six months to 12 years) of the employees working with A & N Administration, the Cooperative Department in collaboration with ‘Pankh’ NGO has established the ‘Fathers Home Creche’ which was inaugurated today. This requirement ensures that working parents have access to safe and convenient childcare options, thereby supporting their ability to balance work and family responsibilities, She added.
In his speech, the Resident Acharya Chinmaya Mission, Swami Shudhananda Saraswati appreciated the effort of the Cooperative Department for conceiving this idea to benefit working parents while the President, ‘Pankh’, Smt. Komal Anand thanked the Cooperative Department for associating with the NGO and providing an opportunity to run this Creche.
The Office of Cooperative Department working with more than 50 employees situated at the heart of the city at a reasonable distance with other Departments/ offices providing easy access to the employees of other Departments of A & N Administration to admit their child in the said Crèche.

Disability Screening Camp cum Awareness Programme on Welfare Schemes for Disabled held in Campbell Bay, Nicobar District
Campbell Bay, Nicobar District, Oct 24: The Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in collaboration with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, successfully organized a Disability Screening Camp cum Awareness Programme on welfare schemes for persons with disabilities at the Conference Hall of the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Campbell Bay, on 24th October 2024.
The program commenced with a welcome address by Mrs. Sumithamol, Director of CRC A&N Islands, who greeted the dignitaries and participants, emphasizing the importance of outreach programs in remote areas to ensure that persons with disabilities (PwDs) have access to essential services and welfare schemes.
Dr. Keshav Narendra Singh, Assistant Commissioner (DANICS), Nicobar District inaugurated the event, appreciating the efforts of CRC and the Directorate of Social Welfare in reaching the island’s most remote populations. The ceremony was graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including: E S.
