Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 22: The valedictory function of seven days training/workshop programme on Plant Taxonomy (Identification, Nomenclature and Herbarium Technique) for M.Sc. Botany students were organized in the Botanical Survey of India, Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre. Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, Director ICAR- CIARI was the Chief Guest and Dr. Dipon Sharmah, Head of Department of Botany, JNRM was the Guest of Honour. Dr Chakurkar encouraged the trainees to gain skill in the taxonomic aspects. He emphasised the need for such a training programme as of today. Dr. Sharmah appreciated the activities of the Botanical Survey of India and said it is a unique type of training programme for Islander students. Addl. Director & Regional Head, Dr. Lal Singh, welcomed the gathering, briefed about the training activities conducted and in his address he wished all the trainees a fruitful and enriching future ahead. Seven days training programme was emphasized to impart technical skill on the floristic study specially identification, nomenclature and herbarium techniques on various groups of plants including Ethnobotany. A series of specialised lectures and hands-on training through demonstration both in laboratories and field especially in forested areas and Dhanikhari Experimental Garden cum Arboratum (DEGCA), Nayashahar of South Andaman were conducted. This Plant Taxonomy Programme was linked with conservation and focused on exploring different livelihood options.
Besides, 30 trainees, dignitaries from various organisations; Pondicherry University Brookshabad Campus, Atal Centre for Ocean Science & Technology for Islands-NIOT, Dept. Faculty members of Dept. Of Botany and Zoology, Jawahar Lal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Fisheries Survey of India, Anthropological Survey of India, Zoological Survey of India, Officers from Doordarshan and Akashwani and fellow scientists and staff from BSI attended. Valedictory function was concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Mahadevakumar S., Scientist C of BSI.

Zonal Science, Maths, and Craft Exhibition Held in Nancowrie; Focus on Problem-Solving and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Quiz
Nancowrie, Oct 22: The Assistant Education Office, Nancowrie organized the Zonal Level Science, Maths, Arts & Craft Exhibition on Oct.17, 2024 at Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Goal Tekry, Kamorta, Nancowrie. Shri Ravinder Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Nancowrie group of Islands was the chief guest on the occasion while Shri Mohammed Yunus M, Block Development Officer, Nancowrie was the guest of honour.
Students from various schools under the Block Project Officer, Nancowrie presented an array of innovative projects, showcasing their problem-solving skills and scientific understanding. Speaking on the occasion, the Assistant Commissioner of Nancowrie and BPO Coordinator, urged the students to create models that could benefit society in everyday real life. Teachers and students from participating schools actively engaged in the exhibition, demonstrating their enthusiasm for Science, Maths, Arts & Craft.
A quiz competition was also organized by the Assistant Commissioner Office, Nancowrie on the same day in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner of Nancowrie, Block Development Officer, Nancowrie and other local officers, on the theme ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. Girl students from GSSS Champin, GMSSS Goal Tekry and GSSS Kapanga Katchal participated in the quiz competition. Participation certificates were presented to all participants by the Assistant Commissioner, Nancowrie.

Women Helpline-181 Leads Swachhata Campaign in Bird Line Village
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 22: The Ministry of Women and Child Development is actively engaged in Special Campaign 4.0 with focus on institutionalizing cleanliness (Swachhata) and minimizing pendency in Government Offices. The campaign which began from Oct.2 will continue till Oct.31, 2024, focusing on enhancing workplace cleanliness, promoting sustainable practices and optimizing the disposal of pending matters.
In line with this, the Women Helpline-181 under the Directorate of Social Welfare organized a Swachhata Campaign 4.0 at various places. The Swachhata Campaign began at Women Helpline-181 on Oct.2 with the administering of the Swachhata pledge to the officials and staff of Women helpline. This was followed by special activities such as cleaning of Women Helpline-181 Office premises and tree plantation drive at Women Helpline-181 premises.
The staff of Women Helpline-181 organized a Swachhata Campaign at Bird Line village near Anganwadi Centre. This endeavour by Women Helpline-181 aimed to raise awareness about cleanliness and inspire the local residents to keep public spaces spic and span. Participants in the cleanliness drive included staff of Women Helpline and Child Helpline, Ex. Councellor, Shri Sanjay Meshak and Anganwadi staff. The volunteers removed garbage and cleaned the pathways in and around the Mini Stadium at Bird Line. The event demonstrated Women Helpline-181’s commitment to cleanliness and community engagement.
Veterinary Health Camp at Indira Nagar Addresses Cattle Infertility Issues
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 22: Veterinary Health and Infertility Camp was organized by Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary
Services, A&N Administration in collaboration with ICAR, Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram at Indira Nagar under Humfrygunj Gram Panchayat on Oct.19, 2024.
The camp was organised with the objective of identifying the problems related to infertility among cattle due to which farmers face economic losses. During the health camp, 11 cows with the complaint of infertility were examined. After identifying the cause of infertility, necessary treatment and advice was provided to treat the animals. Apart from physical examination of animals, more than 20 farmers who attended the camp were given medicines and technical advice for proper rearing of cattle.
The Department will be organising similar camps in all the Milk producing areas of this UT to identify and treat the infertile cattle. This along with implementation of the scheme for assured female calf using Sex Sorted Semen will help increase the number of milk producing animals in the coming years.
The camp was attended by Dr. K. A. Naveen, Director, DAH&VS, Dr. Perumal P, Senior Scientist from ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram, Dr. Parag Deori, Senior Veterinary Officer and staff of Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan.

Awareness and Education Programme on Drug Addiction held at MGGC Mayabunder
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 22: An Awareness and Education Programme on Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse was held at Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder on 21-10-2024 alongwith 55 participants in attendance. The main objective of the programme was raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and promoting healthier, drug-free lifestyles, and featured several distinguished guests, resource persons, and speakers.
Dr. N. Laxmi, who warmly welcomed the Chief Guest Mr. Dr. B.Prabhuram, Principal of Mahatma Gandhi Govt College Mayabunder alongwith resource persons, guest lecturers, and all participants.
Mr. Sukhranjan Biswas, Deputy Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra delivered the welcome address, expressing gratitude to all the attendees and highlighting the importance of collective efforts to combat drug addiction.
Mr. S.Kannan SHO of Mayabunder Police Station delivered a PowerPoint presentation focusing on drug awareness, explaining the legal implications and health risks associated with drug abuse.
Next, Dr. N. Laxmi lecturer presented PPT on the topic of “Creative Thinking,” emphasizing how fostering creative thinking can serve as a tool to reduce drug abuse by channeling one’s energy and thoughts into positive activities.
Dr.B. Prabhuram, Principal of MGGC, delivered a presentation on stress management. He explained how reducing stress can play a crucial role in preventing drug addiction, stressing the importance of mental health and coping strategies.
The programme concluded with Mr. Sukhranjan Biswas thanking all the participants and speakers for being part of the government initiative. He reiterated the significance of such awareness campaigns in creating a drug-free society. Mrs. Laxmi then delivered the vote of thanks, bringing the programme to a close.
The event was a collaborative effort to empower the youth with knowledge and skills to resist drug abuse and encourage positive mental health practices.
Encroachment Drive in Mayabunder: 5000 Sq. M of Government Land Recovered in Pinakinagar
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 22: The District Administration of North & Middle Andaman successfully carried out an encroachment eviction drive today at Pinakinagar village, under the jurisdiction of Mayabunder Tehsil. The operation was executed in the presence of the Revenue Inspector and police personnel, ensuring smooth execution and the maintenance of law and order. As part of the drive, two unauthorized temporary structures were removed from Government land identified under Survey No. 256/1. This action resulted in the restoration of approximately 5000 square meters of Government land to its original state.
This eviction is part of the Administration’s ongoing efforts to curb fresh encroachments and safeguard public land from unauthorized occupation. The District Administration remains committed to transparency and strict enforcement of legal provisions to protect public resources.
Residents have been once again reminded to avoid encroaching on Government land and have been urged to cooperate with the authorities. The Administration also encourages prompt reporting of any new or ongoing encroachment activities for swift action.
