Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 21: The commuting woes of the residents of T.V. Kullam and Dharmapur villages coming under Gram Panchayat Shivapuam owing to the damaged and closed Bailey bridge at T.V. Kullam have been plaguing them for the last couple of years.
According to information, the Bailey bridge was constructed by APWD during the year 2012 and it is the lifeline for the villagers of TV Kullam under this Gram Panchayat. Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Shri Venkateswar Rao, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Shivapuam said that there was a demand from the residents of this area to build a bridge over Betapur Nallah since settlement.
However, the said Bailey bridge after getting severely damaged has been lying closed in state for more than 5 yrs (since 2019), the Pradhan said. The bridge was closed by APWD by welding pipes and bars across the entrance to prevent the entry of all kinds of vehicles and owing to which the residents of these villages have to take a long detour through C.F.O Nallah Bridge to transport their agricultural products and for medical emergency apart from the daily necessities, which is causing untold sufferings to the residents in the region, the Pradhan denounced.
The villagers of T.V.Kullam and Dharmapur staged protest to fulfill their long pending demand and also declared to boycott the Lok Sabha election 2024, the Pradhan said. In response, the Assistant Commissioner, Rangat, Middie Andaman held a meeting on 26.02.2024 near T.V. Kullam bridge and interacted with the villagers and assured to take necessary steps for construction of the said bailey bridge. But, unfortunately no concrete step has been taken to alleviate the problem of the villagers, the Pradhan rued.
In his recent visit to the area, the A & N Islands’ lone MP Shri Bishnupada Ray also showed much concern over the plight of the residents of this area thrown by the damaged Bailey bridge and he has written a letter addressed to the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Honourable Home Minister of India and the Honourable Lt. Governor, A & N Islands, Sri Vijaya Puram, the Pradhan further said. In his letter the Hounable MP reportedly raised the issue of the damaged bridge and its consequent hardships for the residents in this area. The Honourable MP reportedly said that this bridge is the only direct route for the villagers, and its closure has forced them to take alternate and much longer routes, leading to significant hardship, time wastage and frustration. Despite repeated representations and appeals by the villagers and elected representatives such as the Pradhan of Shivapuram followed by protest by the residents, no action has been taken by the administration to reconstruct the bridge, leaving the villagers to fend for themselves for nearly 06 years, the letter read. Furthermore, even after making several correspondences and holding protests by the villagers, neither this work has been included in the Annual Plan nor has any estimate for getting sanction been prepared so far, the Honourable MP reportedly said in his letter. As such, the villagers are deeply disheartened and feel that their genuine concerns are being ignored. The villagers expressed their disappointment over how their pleas for such a crucial infrastructure project have gone unheard and why the A & N Administration is turning a blind eye to their welfare and needs, the MP said. Making an earnest request to the Honourable Prime Minister of India for his intervention in the matter, the honourable MP has appealed to Shri Narendra Modi to issue directions to the A & N Administration for the immediate reconstruction of the T.V. Kullam bridge either in RCC or any suitable mode so the the residents of this region don’t suffer any longer, the MP’s letter further read.

J.S. Virat and D. Charvi Shine as Sub Junior Champions at A&N State Chess Championship 2024
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 21: The A&N State Sub Junior (U15) Chess Championship 2024, organized by the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA) sponsored by SIDZERN, successfully concluded with a prize distribution ceremony at the SVPMC Community Hall, Dairy Farm, Ward No. 14, Port Blair. The championship saw participation from around 150 young players and served as a crucial selection event for the upcoming 49th National Sub Junior Chess Championship, scheduled to be held in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, from November 2nd to 11th, 2024.
In the Boys’ Section, J.S. Virat emerged as the champion, while Galav Saha took the runner-up position. A Chirag Kumar and S M Dinesh Kumar secured third and fourth places, respectively. In the Girls’ Section, D. Charvi emerged as the winner, while S. Sarisha was the runner-up. J Keerthana and G Disha Meenakshi took the third and fourth positions, respectively. The top four players from both sections will represent the Andaman & Nicobar Islands at the National Sub Junior Chess Championship.
The closing ceremony was graced by Mrs. A.P. Athicka from SIDZERN as the Chief Guest, along with distinguished Special Guests Mr. J. Gopinath, AME, DSS, and Mr. Dharmaraj, Proprietor of Sweneha Hotel. They presented trophies and certificates to the winners in both the Boys and Girls categories, as well as to the best performers across various age group categories, as listed below:

Baratang Police Swiftly Arrest Accused in Attempt to Murder Case within Hours of the Crime
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 21: An MLC call was received at PS Kadamtala that a 17 years old minor girl of Kadamtala was seriously assaulted by her former friend and she got admitted in PHC Kadamtala with serious injuries. Promptly, a Police team of PS Kadamtala reached PHC Kadamtala and recorded the statement of the victim girl in which she stated that the victim had been in friendship with a 23 years old private driver of Flat Bay, Vijaygarh, Baratang for two years. However, the relationship had soured in recent days after she discovered his addiction to alcohol, leading to a series of disputes. On 20th October 2024, at around 0830 hrs, the victim, along with a lady friend took an auto from Kadamtala Bazar to the Azad Hind Fauj Setu, near Gandhighat Jetty Road, where the accused was already waiting for the victim. Upon meeting the accused, an argument ensued when she informed him that she no longer wished to continue their friendship due to his addiction issues. The accused, in a fit of rage, attacked her with a broken glass bottle, slashing her neck two to three times. He also inflicted several injuries on her body as she tried to defend herself. Her lady friend, acted swiftly, stopping a passing pick-up van took the victim to PHC Kadamtala for urgent medical treatment.
On the basis of her statement a zero FIR under section 109(1) BNS 2023 was registered at PS Kadamtala and transferred to PS Baratang as the place of occurrence falls under the jurisdiction of PS Baratang. On basis of the zero FIR, a regular FIR No. 37/24 dated 20/10/2024 U/s 109(1) BNS 2023 was immediately registered and investigation entrusted to ASI R. Elangovan of PS Baratang. As the suspected area is at large, a Police team of PS Baratang led by SI Surjit Bhattacharjee, SHO PS Baratang under the close supervision of Mr. Rahul L. Nair, IPS, SDPO Rangat conducted an intensive search to nab the accused and successfully apprehended him within the hours of registering FIR and the broken glass bottle used to commit offence has also been recovered from him and seized by the I.O. of the case.
The accused has been arrested and produced before the Court of CJM, Mayabunder and now he is in 14 days JC Remand. During investigation it is also revealed that the accused involved in PS Diglipur kidnapping case registered vide FIR No.28/20 dtd 07.03.2020 U/s 363 IPC which is under trial in Court and the accused was on bail.

Swift Eviction Drive by District Administration Reclaims Encroached Land in Mithakhari Village
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 21: The District Administration, South Andaman in its efforts to reclaim and safeguard public assets, has intensified its strategic encroachment eviction initiative, ensuring that government land is restored to its rightful purpose.
During the recent phase of the eviction operation in Mithakhari Village, Ferrargunj Tehsil, the revenue officials successfully removed encroachments on revenue land as well as illegal occupation over a private land by removing the unauthorized fencing and a total area of 700 square meters of government revenue land was reclaimed to government khata.
The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman has cautioned the General Public that the District Administration has zero tolerance towards encroachment on government land and to refrain from encroaching on Government land. Residents are once again reminded of the importance of respecting government land boundaries and are encouraged to cooperate fully with the authorities to maintain the integrity of public spaces. The Administration’s efforts will persist in the coming days, targeting other areas of the district to ensure that all encroachments are effectively addressed.

Police Commemoration Day Observes in Car Nicobar to Honor Fallen Heroes
Car Nicobar, Oct 21: In a poignant ceremony today, the Superintendent of Police joined by personnel from various units of the Police Department, Fire Brigade and Police Radio came together to pay homage to the brave martyrs of the Police force on Police Commemoration Day.
The event, held at Car Nicobar, served as a solemn reminder of the valiant sacrifices made by our police personnel in the line of duty. This year, 216 Police personnel including Mrs. Leela Devi, Ex-Home Guard of A&N Police had made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Superintendent of Police Sunny Gupta, IPS, delivered a heartfelt speech, highlighting the unwavering commitment, courage and sacrifice exhibited by members of the Police service.

School Level Science, Maths, Arts and Craft Exhibition
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 21: The School Level Science, Maths, Arts and Craft Exhibition was held in the Conference Hall of Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Haddo(EM) today. Smt. S Bhawani, Principal, GSSS, Mohanpura was the chief guest while Shri Ram Pravesh, Deputy Education Officer (Science), Shiksha Sadan was the guest of honour.
A welcome song was presented by a group of students. Beautiful Rangoli prepared by the teachers on the logo and theme of the Exhibition drew huge applause. About 31 exhibits meticulously designed, fabricated and crafted by the students, enlightened the visitors with depth of understanding and application of scientific principles. The best attractions among the exhibits were Smart Vacuum Cleaner, Tesla Coil, Exhibit of Travel and Tourism on National heritage sites, Fire fighting Robot and Digital Car Parking (the last two were on Artificial Intelligence).
In her address, the chief guest lauded the efforts of the students for exhibiting their scientific temperament under the able guidance of the teachers. The guest of honour appreciated the exhibits on display.
