The Hon’ble Lt. Governor requested for fast tracking issues related to Power sector in the Islands viz. developing power infrastructure in Great Nicobar Islands, setting up of 50 MW LNG Mega Power Plant Project under Clean Energy in Sri Vijaya Puram and resolution of HVDC Link project as the alternate/additional source of power to realize the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister.

Prompt Repair Work and ATM Restoration Earns Praise in Mayabunder

Mayabunder, October 18: Mr. Abdul Siddique, the former Pramukh of Mayabunder, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the local community to key officials of the NACD, APWD, Mayabunder, for their swift response in repairing a critical stretch of the district road.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily Mr. Siddique commended Mrs. Rajavalli, Executive Engineer; Mr. Abdul Mubeen, Assistant Engineer; Mrs. Kalairaasi, Assistant Engineer, Sub-division No. I; and Mr. Jagdish, Junior Engineer, for their timely intervention and effective action, which greatly improved the road conditions in Mayabunder.
Additionally, Mr. Siddique extended his sincere thanks to the Branch Manager of SBI Mayabunder for quickly addressing the operational issues of the SBI ATM in Lucknow, Mayabunder. The ATM, now functioning smoothly, has provided much-needed relief to the residents of the area.
The combined efforts of the APWD team and the SBI management have been greatly appreciated by the Mayabunder community, ensuring smoother transport and banking services in the region.
Jana Sena Party Appeals for Special Ship Sailing Ahead of Diwali Celebrations
Wimberlygunj, October 18: In an appeal to the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. K. Venkat Ram Babu, State President of Jana Sena Party , has requested a special ship sailing from Campbell Bay to Sri Vijaya Puram on the 27th or 28th of October (Sunday/Monday) to accommodate Diwali travellers.
Mr. Babu highlighted that Diwali, the festival of lights, will be celebrated on the 31st of October and 1st of November this year, which falls on Thursday and Friday. As per the current weekly schedule, ships sail from Campbell Bay to Sri Vijaya Puram every Thursday, with a travel duration of 27 to 30 hours. This schedule would result in many travellers missing out on celebrating the festival with their loved ones.
To ensure that people can return home in time for Diwali, Mr. Babu has written a formal letter on the 17th of October, urging the administration to consider the request and arrange for a special sailing, allowing families to reunite for the festival.
District Administration SA Continues Its Efforts to Restore Government Land from Encroachment
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: In a determined move to crack down on illegal occupation of government land, the District Administration, South Andaman carried out a major eviction operation in Brookshabad today, dismantling five unauthorized encroachments on Government Revenue land. This decisive action saw the removal of one illegal structure and four unlawful fences, swiftly reclaiming approximately 2500 square meters of public land.
The ongoing eviction drive, part of a larger campaign to eliminate illegal occupations, will continue with heightened intensity in the days ahead. The District Administration calls on the public to support these efforts and reminds all that encroachment will face severe legal consequences.
The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman has made it clear that the Administration will not waver in its commitment to a zero-tolerance approach toward land encroachments and will relentlessly pursue violators and bring public lands back into the fold of rightful use. PS Crime & Economic Offence Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling: Seven Apprehend with Seizure of 83 Thousand Four Hundred Rupees in Cash
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: On October 17th, 2024, the team from the Police Station Crime & Economic Offence, led by Sub-Inspector Parvash, along with HC/Sanjay Kujur, PC/ N. Thangaraj, PC/Y. Srinivas Rao and PC/Rajendan executed a raid at Junglighat behind Shalini Hotel under the supervision of Inspector Girish Kumar, SHO PS C&EO. The operation was conducted in line with their unwavering commitment to combat illegal activities.
During the raid, the team apprehended several individuals engaged in gambling activities. Despite attempts by the gamblers to evade capture, the police team managed to apprehend all seven individuals involved. Upon searching the suspects, the team recovered a total of Rs. 83,400/- in cash, along with board money amounting to Rs. 73,420/- and Rs.9,980/- recovered from their personal search.
The individuals apprehended during the raid have been charged under Sections 5/7 of the Andaman and Nicobar Gambling Regulation 1951. This action underscores the Police Station Crime & Economic Offence dedication to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of the community.

Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: Directorate of Social Welfare today organized an informative and impactful awareness program focusing on the Ill Effects of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. This initiative, held under the banner of the “ill Effect if drug abuse” under “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan”, took place at Biswakarma Auto Driver Sangh, Aberdeen Bazaar, Sri Vijaya Puram.
The program began with an insightful session led by Mrs. Anchamma, Project Assistant at NAPDDR, who shed light on the serious impact of substance abuse on individuals, families, and society as a whole. In her keynote address, she underscored the government’s strong commitment to creating a drug-free India through the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. This initiative focuses on raising awareness, preventing addiction, and supporting recovery efforts nationwide.
Dr. M.K. Mahato (IRCA), an expert in substance abuse and mental health, addressed the key challenges faced by those struggling with drug addiction. A & N Traffic Police to Organize Motorcycle Rally to Promote Helmet Safety
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: The A & N Traffic Police will be organising a motorcycle rally on 19th October, 2024 at 1630 hours to raise awareness about the importance of wearing helmets while riding. The rally will begin at Flag Point and will run through the Sri Vijaya Puram.
As part of this initiative, the A & N Traffic Police wants to emphasize on the life-saving benefits of wearing helmets for all riders and pillions, including children above the age of four. Wearing helmets is not only a legal requirement but also a moral responsibility. As per MV Act, 2019, helmets are mandatory for all riders and pillion, including children above the age of 04 years. Failure to comply with this rule could result in penalties, but more importantly, it poses a grave risk to life and safety.

Little Andaman Block Hosts Training on Panchayat’s Role in Disease Prevention Under Gram Swaraj Abhiyan
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: The CD Block of Little Andaman conducted a Block-Level Training Program titled ‘Role of Gram Panchayat in Preventive Measures of Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases.’ This initiative was part of the ‘Rasthriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’ (RGSA) and aimed to empower local community members with essential knowledge and practices to address health issues.
The event was inaugurated by the chief guest, Shri S. Paramanathan, Pramukh of Panchayat Samiti in the presence of Shri Belthazer, Block Development Officer, Dr. Vishal Mandal, Extension Officer, and Domain Experts, Dr. Namita Gopal and Ms. C. Vijya. The programme focused on health and sanitation and women empowerment.
Dr. Namita Gopal provided a comprehensive overview of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, emphasizing their impact on community health and highlighting prevention and management strategies. She noted that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) pose a significant global health challenge and stressed that early detection and prevention can save lives. She emphasized the critical role of Gram Panchayats in implementing preventive measures and fostering health awareness.
Dr. Samresh Dey from PHC Hutbay further discussed the importance of community involvement and the role of yoga and meditation in promoting better health and also highlighted practical strategies for disease prevention, including the importance of sanitation, nutrition, and regular health check-ups.
The training program gathered key stakeholders, including the Pradhan, Panchayat Secretary, Mukhiya Sevika, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM), ASHA workers, and Anganwadi workers from Little Andaman, reinforcing a community-driven approach to combat these health challenges.
The objective of the training programme was to empower local leaders and community members with essential knowledge and practical strategies to address various grass root level health challenges to prevent the spread of communicable and non-communicable disease with active involvement of the key stakeholder to achieved the LSDG target of ‘Healthy Panchayat’.
Social Welfare Pensioners Urged to Submit Life Certificates by October 31st to Ensure Pension Disbursement
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: The Beneficiaries in respect of Old Age, Destitute, Widow and Handicapped pensioners who have received pensions from Social Welfare Department and who have not yet submitted their Life Certificates have been requested to submit Life Certificate to the concerned Anganwadi Workers/Mukhya Sevika by 31.10.2024, failing which, no pensions will be disbursed to the beneficiaries thereafter.
Training Programme on “Mushroom Cultivation” to the Farmers of Keralapuram and Madhupur Gram Panchayat of Diglipur Block
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 18: The Union Territory Agriculture Technology Management Agency (UTATMA) in association with the Department of Agriculture, A & N Administration at Diglipur organized a two day training programme on “Mushroom Cultivation” at the Community Hall of D.B. Gram under Madhupur Panchayat on 17.10.2024 & 18.10.2024.
Mrs. Arti Singh, Assistant Director (Agri) Diglipur welcomed the gathering and briefed about the scope, importance and nutritive value of Mushroom in present scenario. She briefed about the prospect of employment generation of farm women through Mushroom cultivation. Also elaborated about the prospects for converting lignocellulosic residues from agricultural fields into protein rich biomass. Such processing of agro waste not only reduces environmental pollution but the byproduct of mushroom cultivation is also a good source of manure, animal feeds and soil conditioner.
During the technical session, various aspects of Mushroom Cultivation were explained in detail through the experts Mrs. Seena Pillai, Agriculture Officer (I/c) and Mrs. Kamrun Nisa, Agriculture Assistant viz. different types of Mushroom and suitable Mushroom for these Islands, cultivation techniques of Paddy Straw Mushroom, production and marketing, identification of diseases, its management & precaution, post harvest handling, recipes and value addition of mushroom. The farmers were encouraged to come forward for Mushroom cultivation.
Later during the practical session ATMA staff, Mr. Ranjan Heera and Mrs. Ima Sarkar elaborated about the processing of paddy straw and method of cultivation of mushroom by providing hands-on training. The participants enthusiastically participated in the practical session.
Similar training programme was also conducted in the field of Mrs. Seena W/o Mr. K.N. Subash on 14th to 15th October, 2024 at Keralapuram wherein Dr. Nagnath Bhojane, Senior Veterinary Officer, AH & VS Department was the Chief Guest. In his address he requested the farmers to learn the method of cultivating Mushrooms for practicing in their household.
Representatives from Fisheries and Forest Department also participated in the programme and sensitized about the ongoing schemes and activities of their respective Department. At the end of the training programme, an interactive session for clearing the grievances related to the ongoing departmental schemes and other issues was also conducted.
Altogether 20 farmers each at Keralapuram and Madhupur Panchayat along with PRIs participated in the training programme.
