Mixed Reactions to MP’s Call for Andaman Bandh: Political Parties Distance Themselves, ACCI, others extend support
Rabindranath & Vikramaditya
Port Blair, Oct 7: To address various long-standing demands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has called for a bandh on October 8, 2024. This call comes amidst growing dissatisfaction with the local administration, particularly directed towards the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of these islands.
While the major political parties—including the Congress, BJP, and CPI(M)—have distanced themselves from the bandh, significant local associations, such as the Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and a few others have openly expressed their support. Meanwhile, the South Andaman District Administration has issued two preventive orders aimed at maintaining law and order during the protest.
In the evening, Mr. Ray was seen visiting various areas of Port Blair, engaging with stakeholders to garner support for the bandh.
Later addressing a section of media in the evening, he stated that his efforts over the past few years have been well-received, which led to his election. He criticized the LG, claiming that he has not adequately served the people of the islands and indicated that he would present evidence against the LG tomorrow.
Mr. Ray urged local shopkeepers to close their businesses from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM and gather at the MP office at 9:00 AM. He expressed concerns that some individuals and media outlets were attempting to mislead the public regarding the bandh, emphasizing that his plans remain unchanged.
As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how much support Ray can gather in his efforts to address the pressing issues facing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
South Andaman District Magistrate Issues Preventive Orders Ahead of October 8 Bandh
Port Blair, Oct 7: In anticipation of the bandh called by the Member of Parliament on October 8, 2024, the District Magistrate of South Andaman, Arjun Sharma, IAS, has issued a preventive order to ensure peace and public order during the event. The order, based on concerns that public gatherings and protests during the bandh could disrupt daily life, imposes restrictions on public assemblies and gatherings in key areas of the district.
The order said that the administration, committed to maintaining essential services and smooth public movement, has prohibited assemblies of more than five people in areas surrounding Murugan Temple, Model School Junction, Fire Brigade Junction, JNRM Junction, and VIP Road (Kamraj Salai). Additionally, any protests or demonstrations likely to cause disturbances are strictly prohibited unless prior permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities.
This preventive order was issued in line with a Supreme Court judgment deeming bandhs enforced by organizations as unconstitutional. The District Magistrate emphasized that the order has been issued to avoid potential disruptions and safeguard public safety.
The public has been informed through announcements and public notices, and authorities are tasked with ensuring strict enforcement of the order. Violations of the order will result in legal action under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023 and other applicable laws.
The order remains in effect until further notice, and residents are urged to comply with the restrictions to maintain peace and normalcy in the district.

On this momentous occasion of the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air
Force (IAF), I take great pride in recognizing the invaluable contributions of our air warriors and their unwavering dedication to our nation. Over the past nine decades, the Indian Air Force has exemplified professionalism, evolving into one of the finest air forces globally. The rich legacy has been enhanced by the induction of modern systems and adaption to rapidly changing operational requirements while upholding core military values and engaging in humanitarian assistance. The HADR missions across the globe and at various regions in India, participation in numerous international exercises and conduct of operation exercises and Air Shows speaks volumes of its professionalism and dedication of the air warriors.
The support rendered by the IAF during peacetime is commendable. I wish to highlight the medical evacuation of 15 emergency patients via MI-17 helicopters and Dornier aircraft in last one year. In addition, it has been extensively undertaking Inter Island Communication Sorties (IICS) to transport local civilians from Sri Vijaya Puram to far flung areas of ANI and back as humanitarian aid to the Civil Government. The first fighting efforts
by MI-17 helicopters at Katchal Island and at Gandhinagar (Shivpur) was
praiseworthy.
I commend all air warriors for their dedication, work ethic and commitment to duty on the significant day. I encourage them to continue fostering jointness while remaining resolute in the face of challenges.
I also commend the step taken by IAF towards nation building by adopting two villages namely Brookshabad and Shyam Nagar in North Andaman.
As we celebrate Air Force Day, I extend my warmest greetings to all personnel of the IAF, non-combatants, DSC personnel, air veterans, and their families and wish them success in all their future endeavours.
Jai Hind !

Today, on the occasion of 24th Raising Day of the only Operational Joint Services Command of the nation, it is a matter of great honour to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of the personnel of Andaman Nicobar Command (ANC). I have been operationally and now administratively closely associated with the functioning of this prestigious Command.
The command has grown from its fledgling days into a cohesive and potent organisation not only capable of protecting the national interests in this region but also enable India to be a regional security provider. The success of numerous operations undertaken in the recent past, along with the Operational Demonstration to the Hon’ble President in Feb 24 bear testimony to the potent operational capability of the command. The command has seen significant growth in its capability and infrastructure and is poised to act as a spring board to the east.
ANC has also been at the forefront of nation building and national initiatives towards Viksit Bharat 2047. The cooperation between A&N Administration & ANC has grown over the years and islanders have benefited immensely from the civil IICS ferries, medical evacuations, welfare schemes including adoption of numerous villages by the military units and most recently the creation of Integrated Medical Station at Campbell Bay. Numerous instances of fire fighting, anti-poaching operations and technical support to the DSS were undertaken by ANC. We are now working together towards the forthcoming attempt of undersea diving world record, off the coast of Swaraj Dweep.
I feel proud to be part of the glorious history of this Joint Services Command and extol all officers and personnel to serve with synergy and professionalism to make this Command a beacon for the future contours of theaterisation. May the flag of the Command always keep soaring high and achieve greater laurels. Best wishes and heartiest compliments to one and
all on this proud and memorable day.

South Andaman District Magistrate Restricts Public Assemblies to Tiranga Park for October 8 Bandh
Port Blair, Oct 7: Ahead of the planned protest and bandh on October 8, 2024, the District Magistrate of South Andaman, Arjun Sharma, IAS, has issued an order to regulate public assemblies, citing concerns over potential disruptions to daily life and essential services. The administration, aiming to maintain public peace and order, has designated Tiranga Park, located in front of the Mohanpura Bus Terminus, as the sole permitted location for any gatherings or protests on the day.
The order, issued under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023 and Section 30 (2) of the Police Act, 1861, mandates that any assembly or procession associated with the bandh must take place at the specified location. Authorities are directed to issue necessary licenses for conducting such gatherings while ensuring compliance with the regulations.

The order is part of the district’s efforts to ensure that the protest proceeds peacefully without disrupting the normal functioning of the city.
Citizens are advised to adhere to the designated location for the protest, and authorities are expected to enforce the order to avoid any public disturbances.
