Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 01: The traffic on the Jirkatang to Middle Strait and vice -versa was severely disrupted owing to major cracks at the lower body/support of RK Nallah Bridge which is 10 km from the Middle Strait Creek today.
According to information, all types of vehicular movement came to a complete stand still after the compliance order from the South Andaman District Administration owing to the major cracks developed at the lower body of the RK Nallah Bridge.
However, it reportedly left about 280 tourist and about 100 tourist vehicle drivers stranded at the Baratang Island. Most importantly, the tourists who had planned their return journey by tomorrow’s flight found themselves in trouble.
The tourist operators and travel agents talked to STS officials if they could transport the stranded tourists along with the STS passengers but the STS officials reportedly showed indifferent attitude towards their plea by simply saying that they had no such orders.
However, the AATO President immediately talked to the Deputy Commissioner South Andaman and apprised him of the plight of the stranded guests and urged him to evacuate them with necessary arrangement. The AATO President also requested the DC to provide STS connecting bus service from Sri Vijaya Puram and from Baratang. Accordingly 5 STS buses from Sri Vijaya Puram and 5 buses from Baratang were pressed for evacuating the stranded tourists. All the tourists were safely evacuated by this STS Bus service and the tourists intending to catch tomorrow’s flight will now be able to make their return journey tomorrow, as per the report last came in.
By evening many other small vehicles also crossed the bridge due to especial arrangements made by the authorities by placing plates on the bridges and allowing one LMV to cross at a time.

RK Nallah Bridge damage Causes Panic in Rangat, Long Queues at Petrol Pumps
Vikramaditya
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 01: The damaged RK Nallah Bridge in the Middle Strait area has caused significant disruption in traffic, with several vehicles stranded at Middle Andaman and South Andaman by this afternoon. As soon as the news spread across the Rangat region, people started panicking.
As per details by the evening, long queues of vehicles were seen at local petrol pumps, with residents fearing that the bridge’s closure might last several days, cutting off transport between Rangat and Sri Vijaya Puram.
Many people rushed to refuel their vehicles, leading to a growing line of cars at the petrol stations. However, petrol pump employees assured the public that there was no need to panic. There is no clarity over movement of oil tankers yet but the situation remains under control, and officials are working swiftly to resolve the issue and ensure that traffic returns to normal as soon as possible.
MESSAGE
Coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Wildlife Week is celebrated from 2nd October to 8th October every year to create awareness among the people about the role of wildlife in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and to inculcate a culture of tolerance, understanding and compassion among the people for the wildlife.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are an internationally acknowledged tropical hotspot of biodiversity known for its rich, diverse and unique wildlife inhabiting the dense tropical forests, luxuriant mangroves, sea grass meadows and fringing coral reefs. Being an Island ecosystem, it is very fragile and therefore requires to be handled carefully. The Administration has taken several effective measures to , protect and conserve the unique biodiversity of the islands. Such measures can become successful only with the support and active participation of the people inhabiting these islands. The unique ecosystem of our islands also provide livelihood opportunities to local people through eco-tourism activities.
On the occasion of the 70th Wildlife Week, 2024, let us redeem our resolve to protect and conserve our wildlife and their habitats to maintain the ecological security of our islands. I would also like to ‘ appeal to all people to supplement the efforts of the Administration in preserving the wildlife of our islands.
