Port Blair, Aug 23: Port Blair Guru Ki Rasoi [PBGKR], a leading organization dedicated to child welfare with Education Department successfully conducted an awareness camp aimed at sensitizing children against child abuse. The camp, held at the Auditorium Of Girls Senior Secondary School was specifically designed as a guide for teachers by Dr.Kushal Baidya, Psychiatrist ,Asst Professor, ANIIMS to help them effectively communicate with and educate children on the sensitive issue of child abuse.
The awareness camp, which took place on 23/08/2024, was attended by over 60 teachers and educators from various schools of the city.
The event focused on providing teachers with the necessary tools, knowledge, and resources to identify signs of child abuse and to create a safe and supportive environment for children to speak out against abuse.
Mr. Mandeep Grewal, Founder & President of PBGKR commented on the importance of the camp: “Teachers play a pivotal role in the lives of children and are often the first to notice when something is wrong. This camp was designed to empower educators with the knowledge and skills they need to protect children from abuse and to foster an environment where children feel safe to speak up.”
The camp is part of PBGKR’s larger initiative to combat child abuse and promote the well-being of children across the Islands. By focusing on education and awareness, the NGO aims to create a community where every child feels safe and supported.

District Administration, SA Seals 02 Private Water Borewell
Port Blair, Aug 23: In a proactive measure to protect public health, the District Administration, South Andaman has sealed one drinking water well and one bore well in Beodnabad village. This action was followed by an alert raised by the Central Ground Water Authority, Eastern Region, Kolkata, regarding groundwater quality for presence of Nitrate more than analysed parameter, issued on August 17, 2024.
The Revenue Officials of Port Blair Tehsil carried out the sealing to address concerns about groundwater contamination and to prevent any potential health hazards associated with using affected water sources.
The General public is advised to avoid using the affected water sources. The public are also encouraged to report any concerns or issues related to water quality to the local authorities.

Lt. Governor Reviews Mega Tourism Projects and Eco Resorts Development in A&N Islands
Port Blair, Aug 22: Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands and Vice-Chairman, Islands Development Agency reviewed a presentation by ANIIDCO at Raj Niwas on various mega infrastructure projects related to tourism and hospitality sector of A&N Islands, focusing on development of Eco Tourism Resorts in Long Island, Aves Island, Smith Island and Shaheed Dweep under the aegis of Islands Development Agency. Further, holistic development of Great Nicobar Islands and 11 other sites were also discussed. The Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Keshav Chandra, IAS, and other senior officers of A&N Administration were present.
Khudirampur Villagers Urge Authorities for Construction of Bailey Bridge or RCC Box Culvert Over Kalpong River to Ensure Safe Connectivity

Diglipur, Aug 22: The residents of Khudirampur village under Diglipur Tehsil have demanded construction of RCC box culvert 4×4 mtr of 6 cell or a Bailey Bridge over Kalpong with approach road to provide safe connectivity to the people in the area who are forced to cross the river at the risk of their life.
According to information, there is a dire need of an RCC box culvert 4×4 mtr of 6 cells or a Bailey bridge over Kalpong River with approach road in Ward No. 04 of Khudirampur village. The local villagers and farmers have been facing problems crossing the river and transporting their produce as well as cattle. Although the residents have been demanding construction of a RCC box culvert 4×4 mtr of 6 cells or a Bailey Bridge over Kalpong River with approach road in their area for long, and the matter was raised in the Gram Sabha meetings several times and even their plight was listened to by the officers in the past many years, nothing has been reportedly done to remove the woes of the people so far, they lamented. “We have repeatedly approached authorities during successive regimes, but our requests fell on deaf ears. We are scared for the safety of our children who have to cross the river to reach school,” said the locals. They have to face the ordeal in medical emergent situations when they find the river filled with flood waters and no means to cross the river, they rued.
Andaman Sheekha Daily talked to the Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Diglipur Smti Boopathy K.V. Raj and wanted to know more on the matter. The Pradhan said that the residents of this area were allotted land during the year 1989 by the govt. and the area is bifurcated by the Kalpong River and is cut off from rest of Khudirampur village owing to non-existence of a bridge or a RCC culvert of an appropriate size over the river. In absence of a RCC box culvert of proper size or a Bailey bridge, villagers risk lives to cross river for daily needs, she said.
She wrote letters to the higher authorities on the matter on several occasions and each time the Pradhan was assured by them that the matter would be taken up for its reressal, she further said.
Meanwhile, the residents of this neglected area are urging the administration that the concerned authorities should address their plight and consider to construct a RCC box culvert or a Bailey Bridge over the Kalpong River with an approach road to provide safe connectivity to the people in the area.
Islands’ Cyclist Michael Qualifies for Junior World Track Cycling Championship
Port Blair, Aug 22: Shri Michael, a cyclist from tribal community of A & N Islands, S/o Shri Cephus and Smti Linda has qualified for Junior World Track Cycling Championship (Team Sprint event) to be held in China representing India. The Championship has started from Aug.21 onwards. He received training at R.G. Velodrome at Netaji Stadium, Port Blair and has further undergone coaching/training at IG Stadium, Delhi.
The Cycling Association Andaman Nicobar and A & N State Olympic Association have congratulated him for his selection and extended their best wishes for the event, a press release from ANSOA said.
ANTCC Organizes Mass Protest against Adani Mega Scam with SEBI
Port Blair, Aug 22: On the 22nd of August 2024, the Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee, led by its President Mr. Rangalal Halder, held a Mass Dharna in Port Blair as part of the nationwide protest against the “ADANI MEGASCAM.” The demonstration took place in front of the Gandhi Statue, symbolizing the people’s call for truth and accountability.
The protest rally began from the Congress Office and culminated at Gandhi Statue, where several party leaders and members gathered to voice their strong disapproval of the Central Government’s alleged cover-up of the scam. Congress Leaders emphasized the need for transparency and called for immediate action to investigate the matter further.
The primary demand raised during the Dharna was the inclusion of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to thoroughly investigate the Adani Scam. Protestors argued that the SEBI had severely compromised its role in ensuring accountability, thereby allowed the scam to go unchecked. The protestors expressed their frustration with the current state of affairs, demanding that the government step up to fulfill its responsibilities for the people.
Through this protest, the Congress Party Leaders seek justice and a fair inquiry into what it deems one of the largest financial scandals in recent history.
Several Party Leaders comprising the Senior Leader Mrs. Shanta Laxman Singh, Former MP, A&N Islands, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, ANTCC Spokesperson Mr. Tamil Selvan, Minority Chairman Mr. John Robert Babu, Mahila Coordinator South Zone Smt. Residents of Diglipur Demand Urgent Healthcare Improvements Amidst Physician Shortages at CHC

Diglipur, Aug 21: Healthcare facilities in CHC Diglipur are hit due to severe shortage of general physicians and an optometrist.
According to information, there is reportedly no optometrist for the last two years in the CHC, Diglipur. As a result of which, people suffering with eye complaints aren’t in a position to get their eyes tested and treated. Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, an individual, on condition of anonymity, said, “Our expectant mothers are facing severe difficulties owing to non-availability of the facility of a gynaecologist here. We don’t want the expectant mothers to be air-lifted or referred in critical condition from Diglipur; we want a gynaecologist permanently posted in CHC, Diglipur, but unfortunately that is not happeningly”. Miffed over the shortcomings of the CHC, Diglipur another person said that there are dire shortage of general physicians in the Community Health Centre and which is costing us dear over the years. There is no bilirubin testing facility in the CHC and as a result of which jaundice patients are suffering, lamented others. The CHC, Diglipur isn’t equipped with an ultrasound machine and patients have to go to GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair or other cities for availing its facilities and which often becomes unaffordable for economically weaker sections of the society, veterans said. The Administration should look into the matter and resolve the issues on priority, they opined.
However, Andaman Sheekha Daily, when posed questions the CMO, Diglipur over phone and wanted to know more on the matter, the higher authority of CHC, Diglipur said that an optometrist has been posted at CHC, D/Pur and he is expected to reportedly report for duty within 15 days. Blood test for serum bilirubin is reportedly done at CHC Diglipur, he further said.
Dialysis Unit Inaugurated at Little Andaman Health & Wellness Center
Port Blair, Aug. 21: The Chief Secretary, A & N Administration, Shri Keshav Chandra, IAS, virtually inaugurated the Dialysis Unit at Health & Wellness Center Ramakrishnapur, Little Andaman yesterday in the presence of Ms. Nandini Paliwal, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health) and other Senior Officers of A & N Administration.
The Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of enhancing healthcare in remote areas, underscoring the Government’s Commitment for improving healthcare accessibility and quality. He further commended the efforts of the team involved in establishing the Dialysis Unit. He also acknowledged the vital role of PRI members in supporting healthcare initiatives at the grassroot level.
The Dialysis Unit was a long felt need of the public of Little Andaman. This will cater to the patients of Little Andaman requiring Haemodialysis, who earlier had to travel to Port Blair for the same. The Unit is equipped with three Haemodialysis machines and trained staff to carry out dialysis. At R.K.Pur, Little Andaman the function was attended by the Pramukh, Little Andaman, Shri S. Parmanathan, Local Officers, Health Staff and representatives from the Panchayati Raj Institutions.

Villagers of Pokadera Appeal for Action Against Stray Dog MenaceC
Pokadera, Mayabunder, Aug 21: The residents of Pokadera Village, North and Middle Andaman, have raised serious concerns over the growing menace of stray dogs in their locality. In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, Mayabunder, Mr. Abdul Siddique, former Pramukh, highlighted the alarming increase in incidents involving stray dog attacks on both residents and domestic animals over the past week.
According to Mr. Siddique, the situation in Pokadera Village has reached a critical point, with stray dogs becoming increasingly aggressive. Numerous residents, including vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children, have reportedly been bitten by these dogs. The frequency and severity of these attacks have created an atmosphere of fear, preventing villagers from going about their daily routines without risking their safety.
The letter urges the Deputy Commissioner to take immediate and effective action to address the stray dog problem in the village. Mr. Siddique has requested that the authorities devise and implement a comprehensive solution to manage and control the stray dog population, emphasizing the urgent need for relief from this ongoing threat.
The villagers of Pokadera are anxiously awaiting a swift response and intervention from the local administration to restore safety and normalcy to their community.
