Port Blair, Aug 27: The Islanders’ boxers, shown their best performance in the Indo-Nepal International Boxing Championship at Kathmandu, Nepal, participated among a total of 13 boxers from India. Four boxers from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, having participated through the Boxing Development Federation of India (BDFI) in collaboration with the International Boxing Association, Nepal Boxing Association, and CGG Sports Hub, Kathmandu, have represented the region on 25/08/2024.
Mr. Sambhu Murthy, working in Andaman and Nicobar Police, Mr. Sameer Godara (Student), Mr. Abdul Shaan (Student), and Mr. Saw Adison (Student), having won silver medals in the Seniors category, have been trained under Mr. Bikram Pariyar, Coach at Shape Up Gym, Port Blair.
A very proud moment for the Isles represented the Isles and India’s name in international events.

Legal Metrology Camp for Verification of Weighing and Measuring Instruments in N&M Andaman from August 29 to September 9
Port Blair, Aug 27: All the traders, auto rickshaw owners/drivers and other concerned Govt./Semi Government Establishments of North & Middle Andaman District have been informed that Legal Metrology Officer along with the team of the Directorate of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs will be conducting camp at North & Middle Andaman from Aug.29 to Sept. 9 for verification and stamping of all the weighing & measuring instruments used in North & Middle Andaman area. Commissioner-cum-Secretary Inaugurates Solar-Enabled Smart Carts for SHG Members Near Cellular Jail
Port Blair, Aug. 27: The Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Rural Development, A&N Administration, Ms. Nandini Paliwal, IAS, inaugurated ten solar-enabled Smart Carts for 10 SHG members supported under NABARD’s Physical Marketing Scheme and ANIIDCO’s CSR in the vicinity of National Memorial Cellular Jail.
The Secretary, Rural Development & Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman District, Shri Arjun Sharma, IAS, General Manager, NABARD, Smt. Archana Singh, and the Director, Rural Development, Shri Shiv Singh Meena with the entire team of NABARD and Rural Development were present on this momentous occasion.
A&N Islands are blessed with hot-spot tourist destinations. The prime attraction of National Memorial Cellular Jail and Baratang remain unparalleled. The palm-fringed beaches with white sand and clear aqua-marine waters of Corbyn’s Cove, Mahua and Wandoor are crowd pullers at sunset time. Encashing upon the pristine beauty, these hotspots have been identified for the solar-enabled Smart Carts with mPOS and bill printers, which have been sanctioned to the 10 SHG ladies through the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Rural Livelihood Mission. To give a sleek look, cabinets to stock the raw materials, shelves to showcase the handicrafts, provision for gas cylinder and fire-proof and water-proof materials have been used while fabricating the smart carts.
The Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Rural Development appreciated the innovative concept of ‘token’ amount invested by the SHG ladies, to make the SHG ladies own up the project. She congratulated the joint efforts of NABARD, ANIRLM and ANIIDCO which has led to a synergy of benefits for the SHGs of the Islands.
Expansion and up gradation Opportunities under PMEGP for Existing Units; Applications Invited for Second Loan
Port Blair, Aug 27: The Government of India has been implementing a scheme called Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) with the objectives to generate employment opportunities in rural as well as urban areas through setting up of new self-employment ventures / projects / micro enterprises. Besides, the objective is also to bring together widely dispersed traditional artisans/rural and urban unemployed youth and give them self-employment opportunities to the extent possible, at their place.
Any individual above 18 years of age is eligible under the scheme; there will be no income ceiling for assistance for setting up projects under PMEGP.
Considering the success of the Scheme, an additional component namely Expanding/Upgrading the existing unit set up under PMEGP/REGP/ PMRY/MUDRA has been added, wherein the units already setup under PMEGP/ REGP/PMRY/MUDRA and performing very well in terms of turnover, profit making are eligible for availing further financial assistance up to Rs.1.00 crore for Manufacturing units and Rs. 25 lakhs for Service/trading activities. The financial assistance will be provided through Banks with a uniform subsidy of 15% by the Government for all categories of beneficiaries. Beneficiaries self contribution will be 10% of the proposed expansion and upgradation project cost.
The objectives of the provision of 2nd Loan under PMEGP Scheme is to fulfill the need of additional financial assistance for upgrading and expansion to the successful / well performing units. The purpose is to cater to the need of the entrepreneurs for bringing new technology / automation, so as to modernize the existing unit and to enhance the productivity of the existing unit with the inclusion of the additional dose of funding and assuring additional wage employment.
All the existing units assisted under PMEGP/REGP/PMRY/MUDRA scheme are eligible for availing the 2nd loan under PMEGP to upgrade their units. The aspiring units are required to submit online applications in the PMEGP Portal at www.kviconline.gov.in along with the necessary documents.

N&MA District Police Gear Up For State-Level Earthquake and Tsunami Mock Exercise
Port Blair, Aug 27: In anticipation of the upcoming State-Level Mock Exercise on Earthquake and Tsunami, scheduled to be conducted across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 30/08/2024, the North & Middle Andaman District Police have initiated proactive measures to raise public awareness.
On 26/08/2024, all Police Stations under N&MA District organized a bike rally to aware the general public about the critical Do’s and Don’ts during an earthquake and tsunami. The rally featured police personnel displaying placards and banners with important safety tips and covered various coastal and village areas to ensure maximum outreach.
In addition to the rally, street corner meetings were also conducted in various localities, where officers engaged directly with community members, providing guidance and answering questions about how to stay safe during such natural disasters.
This proactive measure aims to enhance community preparedness and resilience, ensuring that citizens are well-informed and equipped to respond effectively in the event of such natural disasters.
Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana Approved Projects Aim to Enhance Agricultural Productivity in A&N Islands
Port Blair, Aug. 25:Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) is being implemented by the Department of Agriculture, A&N Administration for ensuring holistic development of Agriculture & allied sectors as per the approved District/State Agriculture Plan in the UT of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During the year 2024-25, the following Projects have been approved, aiming to enhance productivity and support to farmers with modern tools and technologies.
The pattern of assistance to be provided to individual eligible farmer are as follows:
• Assistance for purchase of carbon fiber telescopic harvester @ 50 % subsidy limited to Rs. 30000/-.
• Assistance for purchase of Motorized Arecanut harvesting bike @ 50% limited to Rs. 37500/- .
• Assistance for purchase of Motorized Coconut Tree Climber (Coconut Harvesting Machine) @ 50% subsidy limited to Rs. 62500/- .
• Assistance for purchase of Coconut Climbers (3ss rod) @ 50% subsidy of actual cost or maximum limit of Rs.2500/- .

A&N Administration to Distribute Two Months’ Worth of PDS Foodgrains to Ration Card Holders in September
Port Blair, Aug. 27: All the eligible PDS beneficiaries of this UT have been informed that the PDS foodgrains for Ration Card holders shall be distributed in advance for 2 months for September,2024 & October,2024 in one go in the entire UT in the month of September, 2024. All the Ration Card holders have been informed that they can lift the foodgrains as per their entitlement for 2 months in one go between Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.
Those Ration Card holders who are not able to lift the ration items in the month of September,2024 can also lift their foodgrains in the month of October,2024.
Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan Hosts Largest Science Talent Search Examination for School Students in A&N Islands
Port Blair, Aug. 27:Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan is conducting a Digital Based and Largest Science Talent Search Examination for popularizing science among school students studying in class VI to XI standard. It is an initiative of Vigyan Bharti in collaboration with National Council of Science Museum, Kolkata (NCSM) and NCERT, Ministry of Education, GoI.
As part of the event, Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan, a unit of Port Blair in association with Science Centre organized a Felicitation-cum-Brochure Release programme on 24th August, 2024 in the auditorium of Govt. Girls Sr. Sec. School, Port Blair. Shri. Vishwendra, Secretary (IP&T & Transport) graced the function as chief guest.
During the function, the students those who have participated in the National Level Camp during 2023-24 held at Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Bhopal were felicitated and also released Brochure of VVM – 2024-25.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest appreciated the efforts of VVM and motivated the students to develop scientific temperament amongst them. Dr. Mayuri Dutt, National Coordinator, VVM also graced the function and highlighted the activities of VVM conducted across the country and encouraged the students for maximum participation from the Islands. Empowering Children: Child Helpline 1098 Conducts Awareness session
Port Blair, Aug 27: The Child Helpline 1098, under the Directorate of Social Welfare, successfully conducted a visit to the Government Girls Senior Secondary School to raise awareness among students and discussed the critical services provided by Child Helpline 1098. The session was inaugurated by Mrs. Beena Das, Helpline Administrator (CHL).
The Child Helpline 1098 is an emergency Toll-free number that operates 24/7. It is a Scheme under Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India (GoI). The Child Helpline, under the Mission Vatsalya Scheme, is integrated with the Emergency Response Support System 112 (ERRS-112).
Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director (Social Welfare), emphasized the significance of such programs in raising awareness among children. He highlighted the importance of providing a dedicated helpline for children in need and addressing issues such as abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The Child Helpline 1098 serves as a vital lifeline for children, and it is essential that they are aware of how to reach out for support.
The resource persons for the event, P. Lily from CHL, discussed about the various services under the scheme and also the significance of the helpline. The event concluded with a Question and Answer session where students raised the questions/ concerns and clarified doubts they had about the services offered by Child Helpline 1098.
