Diglipur, July 28: A major fire broke out at Electricity Barracks behind STS Garage, Sitanagar under Diglipur Tehsil last night. According to information, the fire broke out reportedly due to a short circuit. The fire erupted at about 10:30 pm and Mr. Hemanth Rao reportedly informed Fire Station, Diglipur. Taking prompt action, the fire tender immediately reached the fire site and swung into action.
Considering the severity of the inferno, two fire tenders from Fire Station, Diglipur were put to service while one fire tender from FS Kalighat and 01 fire tender from Indian Navy were called to help douse the conflagration. Since the barrack’s houses were wooden structures, the fire rapidly spread thereby causing extensive damage. Due to the blaze, four numbers of LPG cylinder also exploded inside the barrack.
The explosion was so powerful that the barrack’s GI sheet ceiling was heavily destroyed and houses were completely gutted; in fact, everything was reduced to cinders, people said. According to primary investigation, seven number of houses incinerated in the fire mishap were of 1. Jaiman Kujur, 2. Baleshwar, 3. Harihar Baraik, 4. Robert, 5. Alexia Bilung, 6. Jayanti Kujur and 7. Bhudhua Ekka (Rtd.). The fire victims also lost their two-wheelers like motorcycle and scooty. Three goats and chickens reared by Bhudhua Ekka (Rtd.) in the premises also perished in the fire. Though, there was no loss of life reported, a local resident reportedly got minor injuries on his leg during fire fighting.
Meanwhile, delegation of political parties visited the fire icident site today and met the fire victims of the barrack and said that they would stand by them in the times of this adversity. They also urged the Administration to initiate an assessment of the damage caused by the inferno and extend the desired compensation to the fire victims, the source further said.

Markande Tiwari found dead inside his car at Chakkar Gaon area

Port Blair, July 28: In a major turn of events, Mr. Markande Tiwari, a well-known figure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, passed away earlier this afternoon. Mr. Tiwari, recognized for his staunch support of the victim in the high-profile rape allegations against former Chief Secretary Mr. Jitendra Narayan, met with an untimely demise at about 2.45 PM.
According to sources, Tiwari was driving his car when it is suspected that he might have suffered a heart attack. As per sources his car went off the road and stopped near a pole but did not hit the pole. There was no visible injury in his body, sources said. His body has been taken to GB Pant Hospital, where Post Mortem of his body will be carried out tomorrow..
The suddenness of Mr. Tiwari’s death has sparked widespread speculation across the islands. While there are suggestions that a heart attack might have been the cause, other potential reasons are also being considered. Many questions remain unanswered, and the exact cause of his death will be determined following a post-mortem examination.
TSG Bhasker demands Compensation and Immediate Repair of houses of people damaged by landslide in Prem Nagar
Port Blair, Jul 28: The Chairman of ANTCC Campaign Committee Mr. TSG Bhasker has demanded compensation for the victims whose houses were damaged by landslide in Prem Nagar due to heavy rains and immediate repair of their houses.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, Mr. Bhasker stated that the houses of the people are damaged very badly and these people are now staying in Yatri Niwas, Haddo.
Mr. Bhasker requested the Chief Secretary to kindly intervene and ask the concerned departments to construct a retaining wall in the area as soon as possible so that the residents in the area feel safe and can shift back to their original homes.
He also requested the Chief Secretary to provide some compensation to the affected families so that they can start their lives again.
TSG Bhasker demands immediate improvement in power supply of A&N Islands
Port Blair, Jul 28: The Chairman of Congress Campaign Committee, A&N Islands Mr. TSG Bhasker has demanded for immediate improvement in power supply of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Secretary, A&N Islands, Mr. Bhasker stated that the entire Port Blair is plagued by erratic and unpredictable power supply which has paralyzed the household and business activities of people.
“The power cuts are causing immense difficulties for the general public and that too these power cuts are ranging for almost 3 hours which is a cause of concern for all Islanders who are paying their electricity bills on time”, said Mr. Bhasker.
He requested the Chief Secretary to review this issue with the Superintending Engineer, Electricity Department and find out some solution for this power outage happening in Port Blair as soon as possible.

Noble cause on 13th year service completion of 67th batch in A&N Police
Port Blair, Jul 28: 67th Batch of Andaman & Nicobar Police organized various social activities on their 13th year service completion in ANP.
Police team voluntarily donated blood at G.B Pant Hospital on 25/07/2024. Plantation drive conducted at Austinabad Police Quarters in collaboration with Forest department on 27/07/2024.
On 28th July 2024, Police Team organized a cleanliness drive in collaboration with Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) at Haddo Sea Shore, Port Blair. The cleanliness drive was graced by Mr. Naresh Chander Lal, Padmashree Awardee (Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission, Andaman & Nicobar Islands).
During this drive, Volunteers were removed off total 13 bags of garbage were collected from Haddo Sea Shore which consisted all type of mixed garbage like plastics materials, Alcoholic bottles (Two bags containing about 83 bottles), Tetra packs, Water bottles, wastage shoes, sandals, plastic bags followed by waste Plastic waste ropes etc.
Volunteers raised slogans with great enthusiasm and patriotism as Swachh Bharat-Shresth Bharat and Bharat Mata ki Jai at the end of the event.

Department of Fisheries Distributes 8,000 Tiger Shrimp Seeds to Local Farmers
Port Blair, Jul 28: The Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration in coordination with Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture, Kodiyaghat have distributed around 8,000 Tiger Shrimp Seeds (Penaeus Monodon) to the local Shrimp farmers in a function held at RGCA, Kodiyaghat today.
On the occasion, Mr. Abhishek Gulia, Director of Fisheries urged the farmers to adopt scientific methods to enhance productivity and improve their livelihoods. He also instructed the Department officials to identify more fish farmers and motivate them to avail benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
Mrs. V. Sheeja, Deputy Director (Fisheries) provided insights into post-stocking management techniques crucial for successful shrimp farming. Mr. Nagraj, Senior Scientific Officer at RGCA-Kodiyaghat, assured the farmers of ongoing technical support and pledged RGCA’s expertise to boost productivity. The occasion concluded with the distribution of Tiger Shrimp Seeds to the selected fish farmers. Mr. G. Amalatheeban, Assistant Director of Fisheries, South Andaman proposed the vote of thanks.
Agriculture Department Demonstrates Organic Farming Techniques in Diglipur; Focus on Biopesticides and Vermicomposting
Diglipur, July 28:The Department of Agriculture at Diglipur organized a demonstration on ‘Preparation of Biopesticides formulation viz. Neemashtra, Jeevamrit and Vermicompost in vermibed’ in the field of Shri Amar Mal, S/o Late Prafulla Mal, R/o Madhupur village under Gram Panchayat, Madhupur on July, 25. The demonstration was attended by 20 farmers of the area and Zilla Parishad Member, Shri Shribash Chandra Das.
At the outset, the Assistant Director (Agri)(I/C), Diglipur welcomed the gathering and briefed the importance of organic farming in view of the ill effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to human being and environment. Further, importance of Neemashtra, Jeevamrit and Vermicompost for organic cultivation of crops was explained in detail for adapting sustainable agriculture technique.
The use of broad-spectrum bio-pesticide & fungicide, Neemashtra to control insects-pests & diseases in organic farming was also briefed to the farmers. Vermicomposting technique by the use of earthworms in Vermibed and use of Vermiwash was also explained to the farmers.
Method of preparation of Neem Ashtra, Jeevamrit and Vermicomposting were demonstrated to the farmers by Dr. Suhasini, BTM.
Earlier, Shri K. Mohd. Waseem, Sub-depot In-charge briefed about the schemes implemented by the Department of Agriculture.
Similar programmes were organized on mission mode from the month of June, 2024 and as on date 28 demonstration on Preparation of Neemashtra and Jeeva amrit and 4 demonstration of Vermicompost through Vermibed were conducted in Subashgram, Khudirampur, V.S. Pally, R.K.Gram, Madhupur , Hathilevel, Mohanpur, Nabagram, Sitanagar, Swarajgram, Kalipur, Durgapur, Rabindrapally, Milangram villages of Diglipur Block benefitting about 190 farmers.
