Port Blair, July 01: One Stop Centre under the Directorate of Social Welfare organized an online awareness session on Maternity Benefit Act, 1961.The session was planned and focused to pregnant working women audiences connected from different location and A&N Islands to make aware pregnant working women on different maternity benefits prior to expected delivery and after.
Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director (SW), detailed the key provisions of Indian Maternity Benefits Act 1961 and Maternity Benefit Amendment Act 2017.In addition, emphasized about the provision in the CCS rules in which maternity benefits increased from 12 weeks to 180 days. These rights protect women in removing the fear of job insecurity, ensure equal pay during pregnancy and provide financial stability for mother and child.
The online session was led by Mrs. Meenal Rajan, Case Worker, One Stop Centre on the objectives and salient features of Maternity Benefit Act of 1961 which focused on the provisions that the act guarantees the right of a women employee to return to the same position/on equal position with the same pay and benefits after the completion of the maternity leave. Also briefed on challenges and criticisms of the Act, Maternity Policies under the Act and the penalty for denying maternity leave. Besides, services of One Stop Centre that it supports to facilitate quick, emergency and non-emergency access to number of services, including Legal counseling, Medical, Psychological support under one ceiling to fight all forms of violence against women. The affected women can approach to the One Stop Centre near AYUSH hospital, Junglighat, Port Blair or dialing landline number 234221,help line 181 or 112 . The program was attended by Lawyers and public.

Celebrate Life, it’s Precious: Community Unites for Suicide Prevention Awareness Program
Port Blair, July 01: On 30th June, 2024, an awareness program was held in collaboration with Ward No. 01 Councilor, Mr. Shahul Hameed and local NGOs focusing on the critical issue of suicidal death. Under the theme “Celebrate Life, It’s Precious,” the event aimed to spread awareness, foster community engagement and highlight the importance of suicide prevention.
The program was honored by the presence of the Chief Guest, Smti. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, SP(D)SA alongside Dr. Mitesh Behari, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, MBBS, MD (PSY) and Inspector Rasheeda, SHO PS Chatham. They collectively underscored the critical importance of mental health awareness and robust community support in suicide prevention. Smti. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, SP(D)SA particularly emphasized the necessity of early intervention, fostering open dialogues and ensuring the availability of accessible resources for individuals grappling with mental health challenges.
Approximately 90-100 participants attended the event, reflecting the community’s commitment to addressing this theme. The program included informative sessions, discussions and resources to support those in need. Experts provided insights into recognizing warning signs of suicidal behavior, offering help and connecting individuals with appropriate mental health services.
This initiative marks a significant step in promoting mental well-being and reducing stigma surrounding mental health challenges. It also serves as a reminder that everyone’s life is valuable and that reaching out for help is a sign of strength not weakness. By raising awareness and fostering a supportive community, we can work together to prevent suicides and celebrate the preciousness of life.
Orientation Programme for Red Ribbon Club (RRC) at Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery School
Port Blair, July 01: Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS) organized an Orientation and Capacity Building programme for the youth of “Red Ribbon Club” (RRC) of Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery, Port Blair on Prevention and Control of HIV & AIDS on 27th June 2024. More than 20 students were present for the orientation programme.
The programme was organized under the leadership of Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director, A & N AIDS Control Society.
The programme was conducted with the support of Ms. Mini Singhorai, Principal Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery School/ Nodal Officer (RRC),Port Blair.
Dr. Jahanara Yasmeen, DD (MS & IEC), Mr. Kaushik Kumar Halder, AD (IEC) and Mr. Santosh Baghel, AD (Documentation) were the resource persons. Students were given information on the objectives of RRC and its roles and responsibilities in prevention and control of STI, HIV & AIDS including its transmission, prevention, and treatment. Additionally, interactive sessions and discussions were conducted to address common misconceptions and myths. The information was given through power point presentation.
The programme was an initiative to educate youth and encourage them to learn about safe and healthy lifestyles, give access to information on HIV & AIDS, and also educate them about voluntary blood donation and safe sexual behaviors.
IGNOU EXTENDS THE LAST DATE OF ADMISSION AND RE-REGISTRATION TILL15th JULY 2024
Port Blair, July 01: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for fresh admission and re-registration for all the courses till 15th July 2024. IGNOU offers various programmes under certificate, diploma, PG Diploma, Bachelor`s and master’s course at Regional Centre, Port Blair. IGNOU has also introduced four-year programs for this academic session for example: – Bachelor of Arts (BAM), Bachelor of science (BSCM), Bachelor of Commerce (BCOMF) etc. and it is also offering six MBA courses, including the newly introduced MBA in Agribusiness Management, Health care and Hospital Management, Certificate in Beekeeping, Diploma in value added products from Fruits and Vegetables etc.All courses are recognized by the UGC and are valid for appearing in NET, SET, SLET examinations.
The process of fresh admission and re-registration is fully online.
If a learner is facing difficulty in re-registering oneself and submitting the fresh online application, IGNOU Regional Centre, Port Blair advise them to visit the Regional Centre office. Learners need to bring their academic documents (10th, 12th, Bachelor`s etc)to apply online for various programmes of IGNOU along with passport size photo and signature.
The main features of IGNOU includes no age restriction, flexibility in choosing and changing the study centre and the examination centre, no compulsory attendance, no TC or migration certificate, additional time for the completion of the courses and free admission for SC/ST learners.
Furthermore, students who are studying in regular mode can also opt for a second degree in IGNOU as per UGC guidelines.
