Port Blair, June 05: The Germany Jetty in Mayabunder has recently undergone significant development, transforming into a notable tourism destination thanks to the collaborative efforts of various local officials and departments. The initiative, spearheaded by Mr. Chitra, Pradhan of Mayabunder, was executed with the help of the Forest Department and the Electricity Department.
Mrs. Vanjulla Valli (IFS), the former Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Mayabunder, played a crucial role in this transformation by relocating and installing the cannon at the Germany Jetty during her tenure. This effort laid the foundation for further enhancements.
Mr. Thomas Varghese (IFS), current DFO of Mayabunder, Mr. Abdul Aziz, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), and Mr. Mahesh Lall, Assistant Engineer of the Electricity Department, contributed significantly to the development project. Their dedication has turned the jetty into a cherished spot for both locals and tourists to enjoy.
The development of the Germany Jetty exemplifies a commitment to the betterment and welfare of Mayabunder, transcending party lines and politics. Mr. Chitra’s initiative and the collective efforts of the Mayabunder Panchayat and the involved departments have been widely commended.
Former Pramukh of Mayabunder, Mr. Abdul Siddique, expressed his deep appreciation for the project and urged everyone to visit the site and maintain its cleanliness.

Port Blair, Jun 05: The Women Helpline 181 under the Directorate of Social Welfare organized a Webinar on “Ayushman Bharat Schemes (PMJAY)” and Women and Child Development Control Room under the Directorate of Social Welfare.
Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director (SW), emphasized on guaranteeing the rights of women and giving them opportunities to reach their full potential is critical not only for attaining gender equality, but also for meeting a wide range of international development goals. He also highlighted that empowered women and girls contribute to the health and productivity of their families, communities, and countries, creating a ripple effect.
Women Helpline Administrator, Mrs. Sushma Pandey, briefed about the Women and Child Development 24×7 Control room established at Social Welfare Board, VIP Road, Junglighat, the toll free Number 181 for Women and for Children 1098. Women Helpline 181 under Mission Shakti scheme intends to provide toll free 24×7 immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence through referral linking with appropriate authority such as police, one stop centre, and hospital and provide information about women related government schemes programs across the country through a single uniform number.
The Webinar has been addressed by a Call Operator, Mrs. Depali Biswas (Call Operator) addressed on introduction of Ayushman Bharat Schemes (PMJAY) and its aims, What is the benefits of Ayushman Bharat Scheme, Which disease is covered in the Ayushman card, What are the conditions for Ayushman card, Who is eligible for this schemes, How to apply for Ayushman Bharat Schemes and Which documents required for the Ayushman Bharat card and beneficiaries can access essential healthcare services covered under the PMJAY scheme at Ayushman Bharat empanelled hospitals was discussed.
The program was attended by representatives of PRIs, general public, AWWs, ASHA Worker, SHGs and staff of Women Help Line and Child Helpline.
Police Team Triumphs Over Small Lapathy Sporting Club in Thrilling Final Match of Dr. B. Srikanth Memorial T-20 Cricket Tournament-2024
Port Blair, Jun 05: The Dr. B. Srikanth Memorial T-20 Cricket Tournament-2024, Season VIII, concluded with an exhilarating final match between Police-A Team and Small Lapathy Sporting Club, held at the BJR Stadium. Police-A Team emerged victorious, showcasing outstanding skill and determination that captivated fans and dignitaries alike.
The closing ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District, Chief Guest, Mr. Lionel Nicomede, CTC, Tribal Council, Guest of Honor and Mr. Sunny Gupta IPS, SP, Nicobar District.
The tournament organized by the Nicobar District Police in collaboration with Nicobar Shopkeepers Association has been a beacon of unity since its inception in 2016. This year, 27 teams participated, representing various villages, departments, and organizations, underscoring the event’s inclusivity and broad appeal.
Despite facing rescheduling challenges due to weather conditions and team availability, the tournament successfully completed all scheduled matches thanks to the unwavering commitment of the ground staff and participating teams. The final match saw Police-A Team and Small Lapathy Sporting Club battling fiercely for the coveted trophy and the winner’s prize of Rs. 50,000/-, with the runner-up receiving Rs. 30,000/-.

CRC A&N-Islands conducts Awareness Programme on Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS)Commemorates Multiple Sclerosis Day 2024 at Nursing School, DHS, Port Blair
Port Blair, Jun 05: As the world marks Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day on 30th May 2024, CRC A&N-Islands the Nursing School at [Department of Health Services (DHS)] takes a significant step forward in raising awareness about the diagnosis of this neurological condition. Multiple Sclerosis affects millions worldwide, and the importance of early diagnosis and Rehabilitation Management. This initiative aims to educate healthcare professionals and students of Nursing about the signs, symptoms, and diagnostic methods for identifying Multiple Sclerosis.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic condition that affects the central nervous system, causing a range of symptoms that can vary greatly among individuals. The condition can often be challenging to diagnose due to its diverse manifestations and the absence of a single definitive test. However, early diagnosis is crucial in managing the disease and improving the quality of life for those affected as it is recognized as one of the 21 disabilities under RPwD Act 2016.
The programme included presentations from experts. Dr. Shiny Varghese, Principal, School of Nursing, DHS has taken a session on the Overview of Multiple Sclerosis – Introduction, Causes and Symptoms Mrs. Bincy, Tutor, School of Nursing, DHS welcomed the gathering, Mr.T.Y. Abid, Lecturer in Physiotherapy, CRC took a session on the Management and Rehabilitation for MS and Mrs. Saranyah. R.K, Rehabilitation Officer, CRC explained about the role of Rehabilitation officer in patients with Multiple sclerosis.
Overall, the programme aims to contribute to improved outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with MS through increased awareness, education, and support and aims to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals affected by Multiple sclerosis by increasing awareness, promoting early detection, and fostering a supportive and informed community.
Film Show organized on “World Environment Day” by Forest Ranger office, Betapur
Port Blair, Jun 05: The Department of Environment and Forests is organizing many activities and awareness programs to create awareness about saving our environment.
Accordingly, on the occasion of World Environment Day on 05 June 2024, Forest Range Office, Betapur organized an awareness program through a film show at Forest Labor Club, Betapur, showcasing how climate and environment are changing day by day. How the day is changing. And the rise in temperature across the country is also a major threat to all life living on earth. This program was organized under the leadership of Mr. Jason ACF, Mr. S.P Roy Renger and Mr. Manjit Singh Deputy Ranger.
And also during this program Venkateswar Rao, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat, Shivapuram along with PRI members, BMC members (Biodiversity Management Committee members), villagers, children and department employees were present. In the end, Pradhan informed everyone on the subject that on the occasion of World Environment Day in 2023, the credit goes to the Forest Department for Shivapuram Panchayat getting the second position at UT level in the National Panchayat Award. And in the end the deputy ranger thanked all the people present.
Mass Tree Planting on the occasion of World Environment Day
Port Blair, Jun 05: World Environment Day (WED) is observed worldwide on June 5 to encourage awareness and action for environmental protection. The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” highlighting urgent and existential concerns. The current environmental crisis serves as a collective warning we must heed. As part of World Environment Day, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair celebrated by organizing a mass planting of tree seedlings involving all staff members. A total of 750 tree seedlings, including species such as Albizia lebbeck, Jackfruit, Leucaena leucocephala, Gmelina arborea, Chakurmeni, and Sesbania grandiflora, were planted over an area of 7000 m² on the campus. All staff members actively participated in this green initiative, aimed at developing a sustainable year-round green fodder production model and restoring the degraded land available on the campus. Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, emphasized the importance of trees in reducing greenhouse gases and aiding in carbon sequestration. He urged staff and their families to plant at least one tree for future generations, supporting both livelihood and environmental sustainability. The institute will continue planting activities throughout June and July, focusing on several multi-purpose tree species. The program was coordinated by Dr. I. Jaisankar, Senior Scientist and Nodal Officer, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, under the supervision and guidance of Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-CIARI.
IGNOU Regional Centre, Port Blair Celebrates World Environment Day 2024
Port Blair, Jun 05: World Environment Day, 2024 was celebrated on 5th June at IGNOU, Regional Centre Port Blair. This event was organized in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Forests, Port Blair. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sandeep Divyajyoti Behera, IFS, DСА, Wildlife, Department of Environment & Forests, A&N Islands. This was organized to inculcate awareness for the conservation of earth for the future generations. In the inaugural address Mr. Sandeep Divyajyoti Behera, IFS emphasized the need of the day for conservation, sustainable development and the role of IGNOU in the overall development of the state through education. Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Jacob, Regional Director presided over the meeting. Dr. Sudarshan Raja and Dr Uday Kumar, Assistant Regional Directors addressed the gathering. The chief guest also announced the launching of ‘one family, one IGNOU learner programme. Through this programme IGNOU regional center aims to promote the educational system in the most backward regions of Andaman and Nicobar islands. IGNOU regional center is also planning for a massive drive with the help of forest officials and other government machinery for imparting an educational culture in the state . After the program a plantation drive was organized inside the IGNOU Regional Centre campus. The learners and the office bearers of the center planted fruit trees in the IGNOU campus.
Celebrations of World Environment Day on 05th June under N&M Andaman District
Port Blair, Jun 05: The World Environment Day on 05.06.2024 was celebrated in collaboration with District Administration of N&MA, Department of Forest & Environment and Department of Agriculture under North and Middle Andaman with great zeal and enthusiasm under the advise & able guidance of Shri Dilkhush Meena, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, North and Middle Andaman.
During the celebration of World Environment Day on 05.06.2024, plantation drives at roadside, Gram Panchayat Bhawans and Amrit Sarovars sites have been carried out extensively in all 03 sub-divisions under North and Middle Andaman district.
During the celebration of World Environment Day on 05.06.2024, a total 1656 saplings which include Neem (Azadirachta indica),Jack fruit, Mango, Amla (Indian gooseberry), Tamarind, Cashew-nut, Areca-nut, Lemon, Guava, Lemon, Sapota (Sapodilla), Custard Apple etc., were planted at roadside, Gram Panchayat Bhawans and Amrit Sarovars sites across the district.
The plantation drive also been organized at Deputy Commissioner’s office, N&MA Mayabunder wherein the Assistant Commissioner (HQ), N&MA- Mr. Ashish Joon, DANICS alongwith other official/staff of DC’s office have planted fruit bearing plants in the premises of the said office.
Similar plantation drives, besides the cleanliness drives which have been organized from the past 02 weeks in all the Gram Panchayats under the North & Middle Andaman District will be carried out during the present monsoon.
