Protest at State Library during Document Verification for Graduate Trainee Teacher Posts
Nishar Mohammed
Port Blair, Jan 02: Amidst the hustle and bustle at the State Library, where document verification for Graduate Trainee Teacher posts in the Education Department is in progress, some local youths as well as leaders from ANTCC and NSUI, raised objections against arrival of large number of Mainland candidates for the ongoing verification process.
The ANTCC and NSUI leaders voiced concerns over the document verification process for which a large number of non-islanders candidates have allegedly arrived by flight from the mainland for the verification.
Expressing objections, they emphasized that job opportunities emerging in the islands should be exclusively reserved for the Islanders. They raised objections particularly against provisional certificates presented by some candidates, arguing that such certificates, referred to as “handwritten provisional certificates,” should not be accepted.
The leaders insisted that the administration should prioritize jobs for islanders and not entertain verification of documents from individuals arriving from the mainland for employment. They urged the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to adhere to their demands.
This led to a commotion, with heated exchanges between the leaders and some mainland candidates, particularly concerning the acceptance of handwritten provisional certificates.
The leaders stood firm on their stance, calling for a more stringent approach to the verification process. They maintained that the jobs available in the islands should be reserved for the residents, and the administration should refrain from verifying documents of individuals coming from the mainland.
Member of Parliament advocates Simplified Procedures for Nighttime Crossings of Convoy Area in case of death in family
Port Blair, Jan 02: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, has brought attention to the difficulties faced by residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands when obtaining permissions to cross the convoy area between Middle Strait and Jirkatang, especially during late evening and night hours in case of a death in their family.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands, he highlighted the challenges families encounter when urgently needing to travel from North and Middle Andaman to South Andaman, or vice versa, during the convoy restrictions between Jirkatang and Middle Strait, particularly at late evening and night hours in case of any death in their family.
He added that families facing such circumstances often experience delays in obtaining the necessary permissions, resulting in the postponement of their travel plans to the next day. The struggle to secure timely permissions adds further distress during an already challenging time.
To address this pressing issue, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma proposed the establishment of a simplified Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to expedite the permission process for crossing the convoy area between Middle Strait and Jirkatang during late evening and night hours.
The proposal includes the appointment of an officer at Jirkatang Check Post (JPP) and Middle Strait Check Post (JPP) for verifying the authenticity and completing necessary formalities at the JPP Check post itself. If required, an undertaking can also be taken from the family in distress, after which they may be allowed to cross the convoy area between Middle Strait and Jirkatang during late evening and night hours.
The Member of Parliament added that he believes that implementing these measures will significantly ease the difficulties faced by families during challenging times and will also underscore the administration’s responsive and empathetic approach to the needs of residents.

In a letter sent to the Lt Governor, A & N Islands today (1.1.2024), D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee said that about 413 posts of Primary School Teachers are lying vacant in the Education Department for the last several years. This is in addition to the 198 posts of PSTs kept reserved for the candidates whose cases are pending before the Supreme Court.
CPI (M) Secretary drew the attention of the Lt Governor to the fact that no post of Primary School Teacher has been filled up by the Education Department due to one reason or another. He stated in the letter that during his visit to various outstations, he was informed by the people that most of the Schools are facing shortage of Primary School Teachers. CPI (M) Secretary further stated that the Education Department has been continuously assuring the people that teachers will be posted soon after the recruitment process is completed but, in fact, the recruitment of PSTs never materialized. Though the Education Department had advertised 177 posts of PSTs on 11.7.2023, the same was cancelled on 26.12.2023 due to non-finalisation of Recruitment Rules, he said.
Ayyappan brought to the notice of the Lt Governor that during the last more than 7 years, a large number of eligible candidates became over-aged as they never got any chance to be considered and selected as Primary School Teachers. It has been observed that the Recruitment Rules for the posts of Primary School Teacher have been notified after its amendment recently. CPI (M) Secretary said that a large number of candidates are on the verge of becoming over-aged and any delay in advertising the vacant posts of Primary School Teachers by the Education Department will lead to denial of opportunity to such candidates to apply for the posts of PST.
He has further requested the Lt Governor to direct the Education Department to advertise the vacant 413 posts of Primary School Teachers without any further delay which will not only be beneficial to the students of rural areas but will enable thousands of local candidates to apply for the posts of PSTs.
