Port Blair, May 19: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh, today interacted with a group of students and faculty members from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Pahargaon at Raj Niwas. During the interaction, the students informed the Lt Governor that as part of the celebration of 30th years of establishment, students and DBRAIT team have identified themes on social challenges and are making efforts to accomplish the tasks by generating awareness in the society.
Interacting with the students, the Lt Governor expressed his happiness on the initiatives of the students and DBRAIT team for taking up social challenges and addressing these issues for the benefit of the society. On the theme of alternative resource to Polybags, wherein the students informed that 1000 bags will be made out of used clothes, the Lt Governor suggested them also to use newspapers for making bags which are more eco-friendly. On the issue of support and assistance to the discarded parents/unattended persons, the Lt Governor advised the students to educate the society to look after such people by generating greater awareness. Similarly, on other social challenges and issues, the Lt Governor observed that while people are aware of their rights, they also need to understand that they have obligations towards the society and the country, he said. It is here, students of DBRAIT can educate the people about their duties and obligations towards the society, Islands and the country, he said. While advising the students to help out and show a way out to victims of drug addition, he suggested to the students to encourage and guide these people to take-up sports and other social activities.
Students also handed over an amount of Rs 1.10 lakh to the Lt Governor as contribution towards LG’s Relief Fund. The Principal of DBRAIT, Shri Utpal Sharma informed that DBRAIT team with the objective of paying back to the society shall continue to contribute Rs 1 lakh towards LG’s Relief Fund every year. The theme “PRATIDAN”-Paying back to the society was co-ordinated by Smt Suraj Moli V S, Dean Academics, Lecturer(SG) Electronics.

LG to visit Havelock on May 20
Port Blair, May 19: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A. K. Singh will be on a day’s visit to Havelock on May 20, 2014. The programme of the Lt Governor during his stay there includes inauguration of Convention Centre and Reception Hall. On completion of visit, the Lt Governor will return to Port Blair on May 21, 2014.
LG, others pay tributes to Great Andamanese
Port Blair, May 18: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A.K. Singh yesterday led the islanders in paying rich tributes to all those Great Andamanese killed during the Battle of Aberdeen fought in the year 1859.
In a solemn function held at the Battle of Aberdeen Memorial, Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex here yesterday morning, the Lt Governor laid wreath at the memorial followed by paying of floral tributes by the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, the DGP, Shri Sudhir Yadav, PBMC Chairperson, Shri K. Ganeshan, the Chairperson, SSWB, Smt. Ratna Kannan, senior officers of the Administration, public representatives and prominent citizens of the town. A two minutes’ silence was also observed to mark the occasion.
Pani Puri Seller Kills wife escapes to Mainland; Police Struggles to locate accused

Port Blair, May 18: In a shocking incident, a Pani Puri Seller murdered his wife yesterday and escaped to Kolkata by a Private Airlines flight soon after murder. The accused reportedly escaped with all his identity proofs leaving police totally clueless.
According to reports, the Pani Puri seller, a suspected Bangladeshi illegal migrant had taken a room on rent at Telegu Basti Dollygunj, nearly one month back. He used to live with his wife in a suspicious manner and never used to talk to neighbours. His neighbours even do not know his and his wife’s name.
According to neighbours, he used go for selling Pani Puri at 2.00 PM every day afternoon along with his wife but yesterday he went out of his home alone and while going he locked the door from outside. As there was no trace of the wife, neighbours, on doubt, informed police.
When police reached the spot, they found dead body of the Pani Puri seller’s wife. There was a deadly cut mark on the neck of the victim.
When police investigated it was found that the family had no links in Andaman and the accused has escaped to Kolkata yesterday afternoon, soon after the murder. Infact the accused first purchased a ticket, then committed the murder and then escaped from Andaman in a well planned manner. The accused reportedly took away with him all his identity proofs and documents so that no one can trace him out. Police department is investigating the matter deeply and claims to have some leads in this case. Andaman and Nicobar Police has exceptional record of solving Murder cases and it is expected that the Police will crack this case soon.
Meanwhile this case has once again raised the issue that how safe are we from Bangladeshi Illegal migrants, who enter into Andaman through Kolkata with all possible fake identity documents. Hope the Administration will take some preventive steps to check the background of every such illegal intruders.
Two–day swimming competition concludes
Administration making best efforts to upgrade sports facilities in isles; multipurpose stadium to come up at Wimberlygunj: LG
Port Blair, May 18: The Administration is making best efforts to upgrade the sports facilities to ensure that sports in these Islands develop further, said the Lt. Governor, Lt. General (Retd) A K Singh, while speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of the two-day swimming competition held at Swimming Pool, Netaji Sports Complex here this evening. The First Lady of these Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh, the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, the Director General of Police, Shri Sudhir Yadav, the Chairperson PBMC, Shri K. Ganeshan, the Chairperson SSWB, Smt. Ratna Kannan, the Chief Captain Tribal Council, Shri Aberdeen Blair, Senior officials of the Defence and Civil Administration and a good number of general public witnessed some of the final events of the swimming competition.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Lt. Governor said that the A&N Administration is giving special attention to upgrade sports facilities for which many sports infrastructures are being created. A multipurpose stadium is being developed in Nicobar while another multipurpose stadium will come up at Wimberlygunj, the Lt. Governor added. The Lt. Governor further stated that the services of coaches in different disciplines have been made available for the benefit of the sportspersons and the youths of these Islands. With the coming up of the sports projects and the services of the coaches available in different disciplines, sports in these islands will see new heights in the coming years, the Lt. Governor added.
The Lt. Governor also complimented the Sports Department for organizing various competitions including this swimming competition. Such competitions not only provide an opportunity for the youth to take part but it also enables them to realize their worth and prepare themselves for future competitions, the Lt. Governor added. The Lt. Governor directed the Sports Department to conduct sports competitions periodically in different disciplines so that more youths can participate in these events and give their best performance.
The Lt. Governor gave away prizes to the winners of the 50 mtrs men open Category (free style) while the First Lady of these Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh gave away prizes to the winners 50 mtrs women open Category (free style).
In the 50 mtrs men open category (free style) competition, Saw Cheku from Mayabunder stood first and became the fastest swimmer in this category in isles while PD Barua and Dilli Rao stood second and third respectively.
Similarly, in the 50 mtrs women open category (free style), Holika of A&N Police stood first and became the fastest swimmer in this category in isles while Divya Kumari, a student of M/B College and Neelam Madhuri Minj of SAI stood second and third respectively.
MP called on the Lt Governer
Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, the MP who was re-elected for the Lok Sabha seat from the A&N Parliamentary Constituency, alongwith Smt Rupa Ray called on the Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh, at Raj Niwas on 17.05.2014. Smt Suneeti Singh, First Lady of the Islands was also present. The Lt Governor congratulated him on winning the election and extended his best wishes.
LG reviews functioning of the Jail Department
Port Blair, May 18: The Lt Governor reviewed the functioning of the Jail Department last week. The Chief Secretary, Secretary (Jail) and IG (Prisons) were present. During this meeting, the Lt Governor reviewed the compliance of his earlier directions given during his visit to the District Jail in March this year. Besides, all major infrastructural projects being undertaken in the District Jail and the New Jail Complex, Prothrapur were taken up. He appreciated the welfare activities taking place in the District Jail. He directed the Jail authorities to address the overcrowding problem and ensure more activities for the welfare of prisoners are undertaken.
Modi wave, Bishnu’s magic work Bishnu retains lone LS seat of Andaman and Nicobar islands
Port Blair, May 16: The Bharatiya Janta Party Candidate, Bishnu Pada Ray won the Lok Sabha Elections from A & N Parliamentary Constituency by defeating his nearest rival, Kuldeep Rai Sharma of Indian National Congress, by 7,812 votes.
According to results declared by P Jawahar, the Returning Officer of A & N Parliamentary Constituency Ray got altogether 90,969 votes, while Sharma got 83,157 votes. Among 15 contestants Mr. Sanjay Meshack of Aam Admi Party, managed the third position, who got only 3,737 votes.
Addressing media persons soon after declaration of results, Ray expressed his sincere gratitude towards people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for electing him as Member of Parliament of Union Territory for the third time.
“I dedicate this win to people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. I shall dedicate myself for overall development of A & N Islands, especially employment generation. Other than these welfare projects, which were pending due to UPA rules will be untaken again,” Ray to media persons at the vote counting venue.
63 years old Bishnu Pada Ray was first elected to 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 and again re-elected as Member of Parliament in 15th Lok Sabha in 2009.
