Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 28: The Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee President Mr. Rangalal Halder has addressed a formal request to the Directorate of Health Services, A&N Administration, urging immediate intervention to improve the deteriorating conditions in Female Ward 2 at GB Pant Hospital.
In his letter, he said that the ward, which accommodates around 30-40 patients, is currently facing severe discomfort due to inadequate ventilation and poor hygiene conditions and the absence of proper air circulation, coupled with the non-functional or insufficient fans, has made the environment unbearable for the patients.
He also highlighted the condition of the ward which has significantly deteriorated over time due to a lack of maintenance. He said that the walls have not been repainted for a long time, and the shortage of sanitation staff is exacerbating the unhygienic conditions with only one sweeper has been assigned to the entire ward, which is insufficient to maintain the necessary hygiene standards.
In light of these concerns, Mr. Halder has made the following urgent appeals to the Directorate of Health Services for Installation of three Air Conditioners , Increase in the number of Sweepers and Immediate maintenance work at the concern ward.
Mr. Halder emphasized that providing a safe and comfortable environment for patients should be a top priority, and he urged the administration to take swift action to address these pressing concerns.C
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar. 27: Upon the direction of Commissioner Food Safety, A&N Islands (DC,SA), the Joint Commissioner (Food Safety)/ADM(SA) along with a team of Food Safety Officials conducted field inspection at the Fish Market, Junglighat today. The inspection was conducted to check the use of harmful chemicals such as formalin in fishes being sold in the South Andaman District. Harmful chemicals are used sometimes to prolong the freshness of fish.
The team carried out tests of the fishes in the market using test kits developed by ICAR- CIFT Cochin. Out of more than 50 samples tested, 04 were found to be positive with formalin content. Further investigation with accredited labs is being done on the positive samples and action deemed appropriate under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 will be taken. The Joint Commissioner (Food Safety)/ADM interacted with the fish sellers in the market and informed them about the harmful effects of such formalin laced fishes on human health. The Joint Commissioner (Food Safety)/ADM has strictly warned all the stake holders to refrain from any such activities. The punitive action shall be initiated under the provisions of FSS Act and appropriate action will be taken against the violators to ensure the public health and safety.
Further, another team of Food Safety Officials were also deputed to collect samples of water and ice that are being used for preservation of fishes commonly by local fish vendors. Spot test of ice and water were also carried out with the use of field test kit and were found negative.
Moreover, the Food Safety Department has also lifted regulatory samples of fishes to be analysed by the FSSAI and NABL accredited laboratory for various parameters prescribed by FSSAI.
The Joint Commissioner (Food Safety)/ADM has warned the food business operators not to indulge in any such violations failing which strict action under Food Safety Act shall be initiated against the violators. The general public can lodge their complaints at phone No. 03192-236112.
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 26: During their visit to Mumbai, Prince Rashid, Chairman, Tribal Development Council, A&N Islands and Rayhaan Pasha, President of Nicobar Youth Association paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Maharashtra, Mr. C.P. Radhakrishnan, and presented Tribes Nicobar Virgin Coconut Oil, which was recognized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat, along with the booklet Journey of Tribes Nicobar Virgin Coconut Oil to GI Tag. The Governor appreciated their efforts in achieving the GI tag, recognizing it as a significant step towards preserving and promoting the indigenous heritage of Nicobar.

Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 23: Through diligent efforts, the Aberdeen Police Station team successfully arrested an individual involved in a cheating case worth Rs. 10 lakhs.
On 05/12/2024, a case has been registered at PS Aberdeen regarding the fraudulent sale of land using forged documents, deceiving the complainant of Rs. 10 lakhs. The primary suspect, a civil contractor from Phoenix Bay had been on the run and was traced to Palakkad, Kerala. Acting on credible information, the police apprehended him and brought him in for questioning.
The accused admitted to sell the land to complainant at Dollygunj with a female accomplice, who impersonated the landowner during the notarization of the agreement with another victim. Further investigation led to the identification of the female accomplice, a resident of Old Pahargaon Village, who confessed to forging the complainant’s documents, including her Aadhar card and photo to execute the fraudulent sale agreement for Rs. 25 lakhs to receive Rs 10 lakh from victim. The fraudsters shared the Rs. 10 lakh advance between them.
The prime accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody on 20/03/2025. The investigation is under process.
The entire investigation was supervised by Insp. Vishal Ram, SHO PS Aberdeen under the command of Mr. Vikas Swami, IPS, SDPO South Andaman.

Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 21: District Administration, South Andaman has taken strict action against violators who were indulged in illegal extraction and were dumping earth in contravention of Land Revenue Regulations.
During a recent field inspection, the revenue officials found unauthorized extraction and dumping of earth at Guptara Village under Ferrargunj Tehsil. As a result, a fine of Rs 2,00,000/- (Rupees Two Lakhs only) was imposed on the violators against illegal extraction and dumping of earth.
The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman has warned unscrupulous elements involved in illegal extraction and violation of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Land Revenue and Land Reforms Regulation 1966 to desist from indulging in such acts in future failing which stern action would be taken against them.
Port Blair, March 20, 2025: The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are currently witnessing an unprecedented literary event with the launch of the Andaman Book Festival 2025, arranged by Atul Smriti Samiti, commonly known as the Bengali Club, supported by Publishers & Booksellers Guild Kolkata and Ministry of Art and Culture EZCC Kolkata. Sri Vijayapuram, Mar 19: The Andaman & Nicobar Mahila Congress Committee, under the direction of Mahila Congress National President Smt. Alka Lamba, organized a massive protest on 19th March, 2025 demanding the immediate implementation of the 33% women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. The protest was led by State Mahila Congress President Smt. Zubaida Begum and witnessed the participation of several key leaders and party members.
The protest march commenced from Gandhi Bhavan, Port Blair, with a large gathering of Mahila Congress members raising slogans and voicing strong opposition against the BJP-led Central Government for delaying the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Law despite its passage in Parliament.

The protest concluded with a strong resolution demanding the government to prioritize women’s political empowerment and uphold the constitutional promise of gender equality in decision-making bodies.
